How To Advertise?
-
Hello all!
My own MUSH will not be ready till sometime in the mid-late 2017 (hopefully), but I am someone who likes to plan ahead; Way ahead. I did some searching in this topic, or at least tried to, but didn't find any facts or helpful tips on how one should go about advertising their MU*.I know that this location would be one place to advertise and I know sharing ads between MU*s is another one, but is there any advice anyone could give? Other locations that could be used? I would love some suggestions and I am even sure that there are probably some new folks out there that could be wondering as well.
Any information given would be very appreciative and any advice for someone who is fairly new at this sort of thing.
Thank you!!

Step one: get a box.
Step two: cut a hole in that box.Wait, wrong directions.
MUDconnector is one that I used in the past, though most often I rely on MU Soapbox these days. Most commonly it seems and feels like word of mouth tends to be the biggest draw of the masses. It's how I frequently discover a new game. A friend contacts me, tells me about a cool new game, and I check it out. It's rare that I make the first move in regard to new games, without someone already in place to give me an idea that a game is fun and worth taking the time to CG into.

I'm actually thinking about setting up a link exchange when I get more of my site together, with a template setup folks can use for the same. Since a lot of folks don't come to forums even to lurk, it seems to be a good way for the community to spread the word about the kind of games that are out there on the sites people are most likely to find if they're looking for actual games.

My advice is this: Advertise when you are ready and know what you're going to offer, and when you're going to offer it, but not before.
Most projects fall apart well before they come out of the "hey, I got this idea..." stage. And we, fickle lot that we are to begin with, have seen way too many projects disappear well before fruition.
So find the people who'll help you staff it, make sure you got the technical infrastructure taken care of (i.e. you got a host, someone to code, if you got a wiki someone to set it up, etc) then when it looks like you're actually going to open in a matter of weeks tell us why we should want it to open even sooner.
But yeah, if you want to advertise this forum is as good as any. Good luck!

Seconding this. I won't even post anything until I'm at what I consider 'half done'. And the thing I did went on hiatus for something else -- which I'm not gonna post until it's ready for beta at this point 'cause I know me too well, shiny things distract me.

If your game is based on an already established property you might also want to advertise to that fandom.
