I'm not sure this counts as Health & Wealth & GrownUp Stuff but in other news the upcoming election is seriously affecting my mental health. I'm looking forward to it all being over, one way or another.Seconded. Between this and Brexit, I can't open my twitter feed without an anxiety burst.

I think it would be easier if I could just resign myself to worst case scenario, but that flicker of hope/uncertainty keeps me glued to the news. It's like being strung along by a bad relationship.
Otherwise to be honest at this point I would just rather not read it.

It is hope that kills you. I just am too damn tired of the lot of them.
My friend suggests that, instead of elections, we just have jury service MPs... every 4 years a new bunch of randoms. Can't be worse.

I concur. Do not give out legal advice unless you are a lawyer.
Sincerely, someone who prosecutes the unauthorized practice of law.

Yeah, I wasn't intending it as legal advice. Just common lore here in America.

Since I'm still stupidly sick and it's been days....at urgent care.
Half expect them to tell me to just keep sleeping and drinking lots of liquids tho.
-
@Auspice If it's the head cold from hell that I had, yeah. That's about all you can do. Treat the symptoms.
I missed 3 days of work, left early on day 4 and managed to get through day 5 by telling myself it was Friday and I could be sick all weekend. Still took another week to not feel bad though I was able to go to work.
Fortunately, it stayed out of my chest so hoping yours stays clear.

I missed Thurs and Fri after it set in Weds. I've had a fever. Congestion. Get exhausted by turns. And it has been in my chest: I'm coughing a ton.....which doesn't help the sore throat.
But I usually don't get fevers and I usually don't end up sick this long so here I am waiting to be seen and really just wanting to go home and curl up under a blanket.

holds up his favorite 'UPL is utter bullshit' sign
But otherwise I agree.

@Auspice Then yes, a doctor is a good thing, I'd ask for promethazine with codeine syrup. It's a pretty good effective cough syrup. Taste horrid though.
-
48 hours into the flu and I don't feel significantly better than I did the first night. This is misery.
Worse, my poorly-timed illness has killed a trip that sweetie had been totally looking forward to and now I feel extra awful as a result.
Please send non-hostile thoughts and try not to pick up any of my germs.

I just hate the wait and the $70.
I'd rather be home in bed than in this office and that $70 is half of what I need to secure my new apartment.
-
yaaaay flu
Now they're testing to make sure I don't ALSO have strep

Sure, sure.
When you seen what I’ve seen, friend, you will burn that sign.

That will be the day that 'ignorance of the law is not a defense' goes out the window.
If we are all considered to be such experts on the law that we can obey every premise of it at all times, then we are also expert enough to discuss it with others. Full stop.

Now I'm curious. I assumed it was kinda like practicing medicine without a license. Like you can say: "Oh you should try some honey tea for your cough" or "Put some ice on that bruise" but if you go beyond layman stuff and start claiming to be a medical professional and performing back-room appendectomies you're gonna have issues. Is it not?

The difference between discussing the law among peers and advising someone about the same is the difference between knowing you breathe with lungs and advising someone about the health of the same.
People ought to know damn well to be careful of sounding authoritative on a subject that can have grave consequences away from this forum.
Suffice to say that I have dealt with ignorance of the law and the consequences of that ignorance to say without hyperbole that lay people relying on hearsay without access or experience with interpreting the law should leave it alone.

The tl;dr in terms of civil liability in most jurisdictions is that if you
- apply law to facts in such a way that
- a person could reasonably believe that you are offering legal advice, and
- that person then goes and acts on that presumed legal advice to their detriment,
then you are liable for some serious shit. It's even worse for actual lawyers. That's why you see most of us say things like "in most jurisdictions" and "this isn't legal advice" very frequently.
I don't know what the criminal aspect for unauthorized practice entails, but I expect it's pretty similar throughout the States.

Ours is "engaging in the business of an attorney", which seems to me criminally overbroad in a very "I know it when I see it" sort of way. Even talking about the law with another personx in general terms, has been regarded as qualifying. And ours is controlled by the Supreme Court by constitutional writ, not a bar, so we're doubly screwed in that they are also the only ones authorized to prosecute it.
