Spent most of the day in the emergency room with my sister who had some stroke-like symptoms. CT Scan and MRI reveal no evidence of stroke, but might still have been 'mini strokes' they say. Being in an ER is so intensely draining under the best of circumstances, during COVID it's just whole body fucking ass kicked levels of stress inducing.
-
@ortallus How are you and your sister? Any word?
-
@greenflashlight I'm doing fine after a good night's rest. Sister is worried because she doesn't know what's causing her symptoms, but doc's assurance that it wasn't anything 'imminently life threatening' was somewhat reassuring and she's back home. She's got an appointment with her primary care doc on the 18th, but I'm not sure what they'll be able to do.
-
@ortallus It's really encouraging they didn't see anything on an MRI. A friend of mine was having stroke like symptoms, went to the hospital, but talked them out of doing an MRI because he was worried about paying for it (America!). 6 hours after he got discharged he had a stroke that, thank god, wasn't debilitating and didn't kill him but would have totally been seen on an MRI had they done one.
If she's not already writing down her symptoms when she experiences them that can help with diagnosis (and make her feel better). My best friend was in the ER last week and ended up hospitalized over the weekend because she was having heart-attack like symptoms (and had been for months) and everyone was on the edge that she was just about to have a major one but...nothing. So they've sent her home and she's documenting symptoms when they happen as they go through what sounds like an exhausting diagnostic period. But at least for her she feels like she's doing something about it and being proactive by writing things down.
-
@quinn I really like the idea of doing a symptom journal! I'll pass that along to my sister. Thanks!

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway.
So, over the weekend the wife and I decided to try some legal recreational THC. Neither of us has ever tried it before, and she is allergic to smoke so we opted to go for edibles.
So we each tried a 10mg square of infused chocolate and waited.
Maybe 10mg isn't enough, even though the guy at the dispensary said that was the normal dose, at least for newbies like us, but I don't think I felt any effects? What is it that /should/ happen? Can someone who is more of an expert on these things give me more of an idea of what it is I should have felt if/when things 'work'? Just so I know for when I try again with maybe 15mg or 20mg?
-
At 10mg it's entirely possible that the only impact was a little bit of chill and mellow, and maaaybe a tiny bit of floaty, which is really easily attributed to "I want to notice this, so I'm noticing it, but there's not actually anything happening" when there IS actually a bit of floaty. There's a lot of factors around dosage just like there is with any other medication, so I wouldn't be too bothered by "no effect", and it's good to start with a small dose. Mostly though at that dosage level, what you're going to be "feeling" is just...mellow. The dog barking isn't as irritating. The bitching your neighbor does is funny. Stupid jokes are a little more amusing. It's not all that distinguishable from having taken a really nice, long bath.
When you start increasing the dosage to "high" levels, you'll get head-floaty and your limbs will just feel...good. At that point though, be aware that if you have anxiety issues, there is a good chance of running into a strain that will trigger those, especially when you're talking edibles that don't have a specific strain noted on them.

Thanks for the information! That is actually really helpful so I know what to expect for next time.
The edibles we have do have strains associated with them. We have a couple that is Sativa, a couple that is Indica, and some that are hybrid. The one we took was either a hybrid or Sativa (I don't recall off the top of my head).
-
Okay, cool. Sativas tend to trigger anxiety more than indica; the problem with the edibles (and a lot of the other products made from distillates) is that they take out EVERYTHING except for the THC, and part of the parts they take out is like, the anti-anxiety stuff. Look for "whole plant" and "strain specific" type of labeling, it's going to be better for you and run into less of a chance of side-effects.
What I'd recommend in your shoes is to buy a 10 pack of the 10mg; you already know 10mg doesn't give much of an impact, so on a Friday night (or whatever; you don't want to fuck yourself up for work the next day on accident) increase the dose you took last time, see what happens. So do 2 candies. If you see no appreciable difference, next Friday, have 3 candies. Do NOT, as a noob, "wait two hours and just take another" -- that's only once you're familiar with what it does to you, and you can more accurately judge safety/impact while you're NOT impaired.
Indica is a body high / relaxant, sativa is a head high and tends to spur "creativity" (though most of what it spurs is right proper stupid, mind). Many many people's experience with Indica is "take that, go to sleep", so be aware that a nap might be your end result.

Yeah, the Indica one we got was specifically for trying to help me sleep better. The rest are all Sativa/Hybrid. We got a few different things to try. Gummies, Chocolate..etc.
Thanks for the suggestions on the dosages and how I should figure out the right one. I probably would have tried taking 1.5 of the dose next time, and then if I didn't notice anything taken another one after 2 hours as you said since that is what was suggested to us.
I really appreciate the information as a definite newb in this whole thing.

Oh, awesome. Those are great!
Taking a second dose after you've taken the first dose and aren't feeling it can be dangerous until you know how your body processes it. If these things are sneaking up on you, you won't recognize the signs. On the other side of the coin, generally the worst that's going to happen is you're going to sleep the sleep of the dead (and maybe get a little queasy), so it's not the end of the world. It's just not...useful, to figuring out future dosages. It isn't likely to harm you in any way to follow the "after 2 hours" recommendation, but it will poison your data (so to speak).
Also, if you're going for sleep-aid, try to get something that's 1:1 CBD:THC. The CBD is actually the important part for that, and again, a lot of the products strip it out (because people only want to get high, and CBD can interact with that in weird ways).

@sunny Great, thanks again for all the information! It's really a big help.

Because things that affect menstrual cycles and other issues are often overlooked in medical research, and because of some interesting things that have happened to me post 2nd shot (no regrets though, 1000 percent worth the mystery/kinda inconvenience), i'm glad to see that there are a couple of researchers collecting information about it since certainly the official text based info gathering didn't. I was told about this by a doc friend that I trust, she said it was legit. Regardless of whether or not your cycle has been impacted I think its good if they have lots of participants! It is not a medical study but a research project gathering experiences.
-
Oh hey, I thought it was my imagination that it was related.

This resonates with me so damn hard.

After thousands of dollars spent over these last couple of months, on my lunch hour I FINALLY sent in the remaining paperwork to our immigration attorney. Everything needed to obtain my husband’s green card. As of now, it’s a waiting game as to when we get a call back for the interview in Detroit. We were told that could be anywhere from 6 months to a year. But it’s done. It’s over. I can breathe a sigh of relief. And be grateful I’ll be able to have my husband home permanently, and our family being more united . This pandemic has certainly been eye opening. Now if I could just see my step kids, I’d say things would be close to perfect.
-
So, I go in for my second vaccine shot (Moderna) next Monday.
I'm also the one that does most of the cooking and cleaning in my relationship. Left to her own devices, my wife will eat cereal (bless her heart).
Anyone that HAS had side effects (If you didn't, good for you, this isn't about you) that can describe them, so I can prepare for what's coming? Am I going to be too wiped out to do household stuff? Should I buy some frozen pizzas or something?
Thanks!
-
@ortallus Everyone’s different. We have a running poll at work and it ranges from “my arm was sore” to “I felt like I had the flu and didn’t want to get out of bed for a day.” Of course it’s all still better than getting covid itself.
I’d get some pizza just to cover all the bases.
-
@ortallus I had my second Moderna dose last month. I felt exactly like I had the flu. I stayed home from work for 2 days, went in on day 3 since I felt better but still like shit. Day 4 I was nearly fine.
