@auspice I feel you on the migraine complaint today. So much.
The HVAC and florescent lights make me want to cry today.
Florescent lights are the fucking worst.
How have we not gotten rid of the things? Why do we have lights that make noise?

Most... most people don't hear them.

I'd never go to someone and offer unsolicited advice about their health or diet, but I'm happy to help when I'm asked. I'm now starting to reconsider the latter part of this policy.
A friend of mine at work has been getting progressively heavier so he came over to ask for help. I gave him some pointers (basically the URL to the /r/loseit FAQ and a TL;DR explanation of what a caloric deficit is and what getting there generally entails), then went over as an example what I include in my diet, including protein shakes.
For some reason whenever I go over this part people's ears perk up (this isn't my first rodeo). Something about protein shakes seems to be looked at as the secret to controlling one's weight, as if they are magic potions instead of food. That's what they fucking are, which I stressed out as well - it's a convenient way to meet a higher daily protein requirement at a cheap caloric 'price'... and if done right, a cheap real price as well. But no, magic.
So he comes back a couple of days later and starts telling me the shakes contain a lot of cholesterol, man. And isn't the sodium high? Because he spoke to another guy in the company about it too who pointed out these things. Also isn't intermittent fasting better?
<sigh>
Dude, until last week 80% of your diet came in McDonalds and Tim Horton's bags. Do we seriously need to have that conversation? Stay the course for a couple of months, see if it works, and then decide. Or don't!

I always love those people.
I eat fast food all the time, but isn't this other thing unhealthy?!
... I mean, sure, if you were going from salads and fresh veggies 99.9% of the time, probably. But for you it's probably a huge step up on the healthy food scale, sooooooo~
-
@auspice It's just that I try to not get involved since it's none of my business what other people eat or how/if they work out. On top of that it takes wanting to do it in the first place, which is usually the cultivation of a lot of other stuff getting them there. I don't know how to get someone to that mental place, and since I'm not a professional... you get what you pay for if you ask me.
The least you can do is not debate it a week afterwards... if I had the cure for obesity in seven days or less I'd be bottling it up instead of working for a living.

So I got contacted a few weeks back by a recruiter for a job with Waymo. They're the company Google had scooped up for it's self-driving car program. I was being considered for a couple of positions and the one I thooooooought they'd wanted to interview me for (since it's the one the recruiter talked to me most about!) was the support position. Basically providing assistance for actual owners/drivers of the vehicles.
3rd shift. Falls in line with what I've been doing with my career for almost 15 years. Sure, easy enough. Pays a lot better than where I'm at, plus: with Google and with freakin' self-driving cars. Why the hell not?
Had conference call today for interview-prep. Oh no. This is for the operator position. Like... training the cars.
As in, 'your job is to operate the vehicles and train them.'Okay, that's actually kind of extra cool. I'd become intimately familiar with how these things work if I get this job. Awesome.
Except half of the interview is evaluating my driving ability.
I haven't actually driven since my drive from Seattle to Austin 8 months ago.
And on Friday I have to spend about half an hour driving... while being interviewed.
Pardon me while I spend the next four days in a series of panic attacks.

Nope.
Most people don't hear 'em at all. That's part of why companies get all douchebaggy and fussy about making you get a doctor's note when you want to disable the one over your desk because it's a migraine trigger (Verizon made it so hard on me when I worked there that I eventually gave up). All 'you'll be inconveniencing the people around you by making their work environment darker and no one else has any complaints or issues with the so-called 'sound' emitted by the lights. I can't hear a thing right now!' by management, HR, etc.
-
@auspice Today I learned I have a super-power, the ability to be tortured by lights.
Fuck you evolution. -.-
Also, I am in no way surprised by Verizon's behavior you describe. Like not even vaguely.

I would like it if the ability to hear lights and such was paired with actual super-powers, like telekinesis or something similar.
I feel it's only fair if, in return for the migraines, sufferers get abilities like Eleven in Stranger Things.

The company I work for swapped out all of our fluorescent light fixtures (which were ancient) with low-power models that came with those crazy blue-white 'suicide' lights. I'm usually fine with fluorescent lights but these made me see things moving in my peripheral vision. So many people complained company wide that they had to replace them with the more traditional yellow-white bulbs. I can't say that I've ever heard a fluorescent light, unless the ballast was bad.

Due to my insurance dropping my psychiatrist (without warning) as a coverage option, my anti-depressant and anxiety meds didn't get refill approval last week like they were supposed to.
My primary care doc was, thankfully, willing to step in and approve them, but there's been a few days gap.
Going off these meds cold turkey is... obviously... ill advised. I'll be picking them up tonight (if I remember / if the brain weasels don't, y'know, pull a concerted attack of 'OH WHY BOTHER THERE'S NO POINT DON'T WASTE THE MONEY ON YOUR WORTHLESS SELF' etc)
but right now I need to leave for work in 15 minutes and I'm not even dressed
I'm even halfway debating just quitting and crawling into bed and giving up on absolutely everything in life
hooray!
-
@auspice Ah Brain Weasels, the cause and solution to so many of lifes problems. (Warning: may not actually solve any problems.)

I am vey tentatively rolling around the notion of getting into slam poetry because I have a lot to say. But I also have the blog project I want to do, and I'm halfway through the year and have made zero progress.
I hate the fact that I am so pipe dream, and can't seem to finish what I start. Shit, sometimes I can't even start.
-
@cupcake ...my vast collection of unfinished games is testament to my empathy for this.

Often, reaching the end shouldn't be the goal. Simply doing a thing is where the joy is.

Every Friday evening we run basketball runs at a court near work paid by the company, where coworkers and friends participate. Although we're all nerds some of those guys are pretty fit, and several are 10+ years younger than me, around the same height - some taller, some shorter... all good there.
Over the last few weeks I've been finding the game was getting easier. I can switch and defend any of these guys, get to my spots on offense to shoot or post people up more or less at will, to the point where I'm passing out of double teams so I don't feel I'm monopolizing the ball. Sometimes matchups are harder but it'd gotten to the point where I was wondering why they are letting me get away with so much since they don't take it easy with anyone else.
This week we were hanging out after the game, and during the conversation it occurred to me... these guys aren't letting me do anything. I'm doing it. And since I'd never been in that situation before, it really hadn't occurred to me.

When you're supposed to be home and on bed rest and basically a human slug and not moving, but you have to spend 2.5 hours at the pharmacy to get one half of your prescriptions, of which the most important parts are missing (glucose test strips) and the metformin. Call the hospital, get it sorted. Go to dose at dinner after making the SO run down to town again (30 minutes+wait+30minutes back) and find out they done fucked that up, too!
Happy release day after 32 days of captivity, but fuck you for wanting your meds and shit to actually be in order. I expect a pharmacy to fuck up like this, but not the goddamned hospital.

I would like to be able to dye my hair (teal!) for my birthday next month. I plan to / can do it myself, but it'll cost me about $60~ for dye/supplies.
I know there's ways to earn Amazon credit/gift cards out there. Anyone know any of these ways so I can start working on that?
-
@auspice I know there are survey programs where they can pay you in stuff like that, but I do not know the particulars, or how long it would take to get the requisite funding.
