@arkandel And this is why I do not and will never have an account on reddit. If the internet is a cesspool, reddit is the film at the bottom.
there are parts of reddit that are awesome. But they are the smaller ones. the nail polish community was amazing. randomactsof<blank> was amazing. etc. But you have to put effort in to locate those places.

the 't' key on my Macbook keyboard is pretty much dead. I can only get by by keeping a t on copy to paste as I go. I've replaced the whole keycap assembly. My next step is gonna be taking a can of compressed air to it in case some piece of debris is wedged under the contact since eeeeevery so often I get use out of it again (usually just for a few minutes).
But the machine is two years out of warranty and I know getting it fixed through Apple would be $700 and upward of 2 months shipped out. At this rate, I guess my only option is just buying a good portable bluetooth keyboard?
It sucks since this machine is otherwise in amazing shape still.

@auspice ...for what it's worth, some of the logitech keyboards aren't bad. The apple magic keyboard works on bluetooth, and has a similar feel to most of the macbook keyboards, so while it's a little more expensive than some of the ones set up for tablets/etc. by default, I can vouch that they do work (and will actually still work with an iPhone or an iPad as well, if you have either). They're also non-huge and could easily slip into a bag beside the laptop itself?

I've been considering the Apple Magic keyboard since the cost for a refurb isn't too terrible (and not having to have a dongle plugged in would be nice since they can break). I want something small, to reduce weight.
I've considered trying to replace the keyboard myself, but looking at walkthroughs/videos, it... is not an easy process, by any means whatsoever. I'd be putting the whole laptop at risk. I can't do that.

@auspice Since you're outside of warranty anyway, do you maybe have a local mom/pop computer shop you can find out if they can fix it? Not cheap, but possibly not the arm, leg, and firstborn that Apple would charge you. They usually have the tools and experience for the work that make those videos less of a scary prospect.

I already reached out locally. they can undercut Apple by a whole whopping... $200. Making it only $500 vs. $700. And same-day repair at least. Even so, I'd still be better off buying a netbook or tablet and making this essentially a desktop at that point.

@auspice Ugh. I'm sorry.

the joys of Macbooks. Mind, this seems to be an edge case. I can't find many examples of this particular issue. I'm really hoping compressed air fixes it and it is just a piece of dust or cat hair wedged in the contacts somewhere.
Else wise I'll just get a portable keyboard and hold out until I graduate. I've only got a few weeks left of hauling a backpack while walking and busing, so adding a bit more weight of a keyboard isn't a huge deal.

@surreality Normally maybe, but Florida doesn't have State Taxes on Wages. So that was a non-issue.

I have learned there is this gap area juuuuuust above the poverty line where you are fucked. It was this way before the tax reform too. I've been there the past few years. the reform didn't help me, either. Before the 'hey you're a student, have money!' I owed $4.
Yep, poor af and I owed $4. And I moved from a state with no income tax to a state with no income tax. I am just above the poverty line.
It's a terrible gray area to be in. You don't make little enough to get aid programs or enough to benefit from anything. You're in the forgotten gap.

Yeah, I've heard that. But there are enough other places to make it not worth the effort given the ratio of bullshit to useful manure.

Fuck the people that can't do their own job, and get upset that you won't stay late with them because they're lazy.

All my upvotes. For me, people who ignore required timelines for work and do 'easy things' to get numbers and not look like they have past due things. Newsflash, if everyone did the things that have shorter timetables first no one would look past due.

Just get a ThinkPad and install any Linux distribution on it. :^)

When the back light in my Macbook died over the summer, I dusted off my old Thinkpad T-430 and installed Linux Mint on it. It works great (I can even play LoTRO on it under WINE) but it's so heavy that I never carry it around with me, and I only get 4-5 hours of battery life compared to the 10-12 I used to get on the Mac.
I really want a new Mac but I'm going to hold out for one with a keyboard
that won't be ruined by a single speck of dust. -
@rnmissionrun The husband uses one of those silicon skins over his keyboard to help keep it clean.
He had me try one, because I go through keyboards like kleenex. (With all the long-winded bullshit I type, I realize this probably shocks no one.)
I am so brutal on keyboards that it lasted less than three months before I had worn right through it. I mean, I have stupidly acidic skin on my hands (has eaten through fine leather gloves inside a day before), but... uh, just keep that caution in mind in case you are similarly hard on keyboards.
If you're not, though, one of those might help, and they're reasonably cheap.
