Development Thread: Sacred Seed

@thenomain Nobody said it was easy. Nobody (at least not here) said not to take WHO apart and rebuild it from the pieces. (I've been saying that for years.) I really don't know how "F--- 'em" is meant to be constructive toward well-meaning people trying to help strangers learn to code in their spare time, but... yay for making awesome things, I guess?

It was implied, and certainly inferred, and I even started the post you're replying to acknowledging your statement.

Not here, no.
I really don't know how "F--- 'em" is meant to be constructive toward well-meaning people
I really don't know my preface was confusing, but if you're going to not take me at my word and tell me how I'm wrong with nothing constructive of your own then godspeed and good night.

Anyways.
Just do whatever helps you learn, and I think if you want to try to code something and aren't sure where to begin, it might not be a bad idea to ask here. I don't think examples of python implementations would hurt at all for anyone else trying to learn.

@apos @Griatch @Tehom @faraday
Thank you from the bottom of my blue heart. I apologize if I came across as whiny or petulant. These past few months have been a struggle for me in pretty much every category of my life. My confidence in coding has been hit pretty hard, and what I perceived as a lack in myself wasn't allowing me to take feedback or ask for help or take advice. It's really easy to get into a feedback loop of "you're terrible, and will never get better, don't bother". I'm sorry I let that color my responses and ability to take your advice.
I don't think taking a part someone's code will help me-- at least not at this stage in my learning. However, I have paid for through the humblebundle a bunch of python video tutorials, and once I get a droth of freelance work that's due tomorrow at 6pm CT (eep) done, I'll go back to those, and then maybe poke @griath or @Tehom to perhaps walk me through building a +Who for Sacred Seed.
Or poke people on the discord channel.
You're all very amazing people and again thank you for all the support and encouragement.

I will happily sit down with you to help with writing a WHO command (once I'm back from my writing conference).

only drunk contestants will be allowed
Well obviously, that's how you get Ballmer's Peak.

Updates:
I've decided to go ahead and use the available arx-code, and change the system as needed (hopefully I won't break it too badly). I'm not sure how much of it I will use and how much of it I will take out. (I'll probably remove the coded combat-- I know sparring matches are popular, but I'm planning to change the stats and stuff and I'm sure that'll massive break it).
But here's a little theme thing, while I tinker on with the NPCs, important rosters, and various theme things.
There are two types of duels in Cloria. The first is a duel with swords (The Crossing of Blades) which is seen as "the commoner's duel". Typically the Seedless commoners will duel on behalf of Seeded nobles. Typically because the matter at hand is not serious enough to warrant a Duel Elemental. The Duel Elemental is used only for very serious matters. Where two Seeded with combat capable powers fight using their powers. It is very dangerous and though very rarely are thems 'to the death', these often end in the deaths of one the-- and sometimes both --parties, because the use of elemental magic upon each other is dangeorus and somewhat difficult to control.
The Crossing of Blades is typically seen as entertaining and the outcome meant to be respected, but very rarely impacts a noble's life. For example, they are typically used to obtain an apology from another noble or to get another noble to stop trying to take one's protege.
The Duel Elemental are serious, dangerous fights, and the outcomes must be respected and can severely impact a noble's life. For example, the Duel Elemental might be used between Seeded both vying for the inheritance of an aunt or uncle's title. One might challenge the other for the right be heir and the loser *must* relinquish all claims to that inheritance. The Duel Elemental may never be used for small, petty matters. It is not be used because one feels insulted or snubbed. It is only used to prevent massive conflicts between or within houses.

@cobaltasaurus What keeps an overly ambitious jerk - who happens to be very skilled at combat - from challenging everyone they meet for everything they own?
-
@arkandel On an OOC level-- the Duel Elemental will be something overseen by staff. And on an IC level ... I dunno, social pressure. Don't be an asshole OOC! Probably Duel Elementals have to be registered with a court ruler, and if they're seen as frivolous or without merit the person doing the challenging will be punished.

I would suggest a combination of:
-
It needing some kind of legitimate case. You cannot just challenge Lord Bob then take all of Lord Bob's stuff, first you need some kind of claim on Lord Bob's stuff (he inherited it from my uncle who actually disinherited him and left it to me! Or I just divorced Lord Bob and he has refused to give me back my dowry! I claim that he pinky promised me that he would give me all of his stuff if my horse won the race and the high priestess who officiates this stuff has been bribed to agree with me! etc). Basically you cannot just challenge it yourself, you need to get the go ahead from some kind of spiritual or temporal authority who basically deems you to 'have a case' and allow the official duel.
-
Champions. If you are the challenged party then you can hire somebody else to fight for you, perhaps along with if this option is taken also allowing the challenger to use a champion if the defender does. The champions should probably be facing something pretty serious to ensure this is still a big deal. Maybe death or maiming in the fight if they are dangerous enough, or something added like 'the loser gets poisoned/cursed/whatever and loses their magical powers for three months! Or has some manner of mild banishment perhaps. Something so that you do not have The Strongest always just backing up their friends and fighting for them.

I'm unfortunately going to put this onto an indefinite backburner. I'm working full time now, and because of the nature of my job that actually means anywhere from 1-5hrs of overtime to 10+hrs of overtime once I'm actually managing full time.
Thank you for everyone who was interested in the development and were encouraging of the game. Sorry for anyone who is disappointed.

@cobaltasaurus Oh no! I've been watching this thread for a while. But RL comes first.
