@friendlybee You label the words, not knowing that words can be used in any context, including satire, parody and other forms of dark humor/schadenfreude.
The moment you attribute labels to words in the same way people often attribute labels to people to discredit their viewpoints or simply to deflect from them, is the moment that censorship begins. After all, that's what 1984 is about, the totalitarian point of view in which the potential of a word to hurt means it has to expunged from the lexicon outright.
Your next step is to start burning dictionaries and books that have the words, a la Fahrenheit 451.
wowza that's a spicy take!!!!!!

@kanye-qwest Fair point. Like I said, I can't drink, so I'm hitting the gas and I guess I didn't see the wall.

i hereby solemnly vow that i will neither by word nor deed seek to oppress your rl rights on this here internet forum for nerdy weirdos.
Can we move on now to the topic of forum moderation?

While I can feel my descriptivist self banging on the doors to his cage demanding to be let out, it is important for me to note that while words can have context that is as intricate and beautiful as a spider's web... they can also just not be used when it is evident those words cause problems for some number of people.
Choosing one's words carefully is not a difficult thing for the mature person, and thus when someone requests that you do not use a word because they prefer not to see it, it is a simple matter to simply exclude that word from your vocabulary while engaging with or around them.
If you intentionally continue to use words once someone has asked you, politely of course, to stop you're the problem. This isn't about rights, or degrees, or contexts, or anything else than basic decency. I have a right to cook and serve beef, but I am not going to do so with my vegetarian friends and demand they simply deal with it.

@friendlybee I'm just going to give you the benefit of the doubt here that you just don't realize how patronizing or condescending that response is. Or how misplaced.
You're still grossly mischaracterizing this situation.
It would be nice if this was as simple as 'some naughty little children would like to use slurs willy nilly', but it's not. That would be relatively easy to solve.
Seriously. Read the thread before continuing on in the way you are. This is becoming somewhat tiresome.

@surreality said in MSB, SJW, and other acronyms:
@faraday It doesn't even have to be a hot button issue. Heck, I got insulted in this thread (which is supposedly inappropriate) in a completely baseless fashion because I'm 'not pure enough' an idealogue for someone's liking, and they decided it meant something patently absurd and disgusting.
And they got cheered on for doing it. So... yep. Pretty much that. This actually is a problem. Saying "that person is ignorant" only gets us so far collectively when that ignorance is bolstered and encouraged at the expense of truth and sense.
The "ftfy" imo fell into attack on idea rather than person.
Which goes back to my: learn to tell the difference.
And no one cheered it on. Not one person. It was almost immediately followed by you making a series of rants on it.
I've never felt the need to do this before, but since you keep beating the poor dead horse... There was no dog piling in this case. There was no personal attack. There was a disagreement with an idea and no one responded other than mood.
I know you're on pain killers and maybe that's why, but this is not one of those situations. Leave it be.

Bring up the other stuff. The only thing that's getting brought up (I'll admit, by me because it's the part I find the most hilarious/eyeroll worthy) is the slur aspect of it.
What issues do you feel need to be addressed in this thread labeled 'SJW and other acronyms'? I'm more than open to talking about those as well.
-
@auspice We're going to have to agree to disagree, then. If someone turns my description of myself into something disgusting, that's not an idea they're attacking. I'm using 'cheered it on' in the sense that last I checked, it had upvotes on it; that's encouragement and support of the statement.
I'm not talking about that and haven't been for several hours; it got one laugh and one bitchy response, unless joking around with Tinuviel and then moving on to a completely different discussion in the thread hours later counts as 'ranting and beating a dead horse'.
What is even going on here? I'm also not on anything, or drinking anything, etc. Entirely lucid and sober. Jesus, are you? What in the actual fuck?

@friendlybee Ask Arkandel, I didn't start the fucking thread.

Oh, you were very excited about telling me what to post in it, so I thought you might have an idea.
-
@tinuviel Yeah, I agree.
I was telling apos last night that I, like many American people of my generation, used to use the word 'gay' to indicate something was lame, or whack. If you'd asked me if I had a problem with homosexuals, I would have been appalled. I didn't. I never, ever have, I think they should have all the rights and consideration anyone else does. I didn't think homosexuality was lame, or bad, or gross. I just used gay, with different context.
Then I grew up a little. I realized that intention is not the same thing as effect, and that even though I wasn't intending it as a condemnation of any person, they could certainly take it that way. And, since 'calling things gay instead of a dozen other words' is not an INTRINSIC FUCKING PART of my identity, I made the effort to stop.
It's really hard to admit when you've been an asshole, but doing so makes both you (the general you) and the world slightly better.
ETA: TLDR it's best to only cry 'my freedom of expression is being impugned upon" when what you are being asked/told to stop is an integral part of your identity, or is important to you.

@friendlybee I was telling you to read before sticking your foot any further in your mouth, actually; your words are all 'you do you'.

I'm fine with the location of my foot. I was talking about one issue that was brought up in this thread and never claimed that it was fully representative of all of the potential issues.
I'm still not sure why you're so upset at me for posting on an internet forum in a way you disapprove of.
-
@friendlybee You are assuming a lot.

It's a valid reading of the text. Anything that 'hurts' the governmental machine is removed. Emotions, words, people, etcetera.

Then explain, I've invited you to a number of times!
-
@friendlybee I don't do requests.
-
ok, that's also fine! You just seemed eager to try and get a certain response out of me, and I can't figure out what it is unless you tell me.

Sometimes you just need more than one dog to tackle an issue.
