I'm just going to leave this right over here and walk away. And probably come back later because that's how I do.

The Stone Sky, by N.K. Jemisin

Finishing up this book I'm on to start this trilogy. I'm a gushin a little. I'm happy for her.

I did notice the remarkable number of women on the winner's list. It was nice to notice.

          Go winners.

What I find really interesting that Seiche (Sieche?), made that list. She was nominated for a best series. I know that she's looked at by a lot of really veteran MUer with some cringing and hatred. But I think it's pretty awesome to see someone who was once an active MU*er getting nominated for a Hugo.

And, hell. Her writing career is probably keeping her out of the MU*ing hobby?

                Yeah, same.

Her writing career took off around the same time that her MU life blew up and she stopped playing entirely. Lots of people wish her the worst but eh. I haven't actually read any of her books but I don't suspect they're bad at all. The things that made her persona non grata in the MU community were all to do with her interpersonal skills and inability to not hog the spotlight and be both actively and passively detrimental to other people's enjoyment of the hobby. That, in no way, represents or indicates anything about her ability to write compelling fiction.

"Excuse the hell out of you. He's a bag of dicks. I'm a carefully curated box of cocks." -- to @GirlCalledBlu upon being misrepresented.

She's one of those people who I absolutely cannot roleplay with online, but get along with pretty well with in RL. She does spin an excellent yarn, is noted for her inclusivity in terms of sexuality, body shape, ethnicity, etc in her writing. She's won a handful of awards that were well deserved, and having read and enjoyed her work, I don't have a problem saying as much.

I never encountered Seiche in MUdom but I knew OF her, and the first time a non-MUing friend mentioned her books to me, I was pretty taken aback. It happens fairly often now. They're on my To Read list now, if behind many other things.

The October Day series is the one I've had recc'd to me by people in the real life.

Nuku is still putting out insanely popular pony-themed RPG books, so while I was hoping that Seiche's life was miserable for the horrible things that she did to honest people (she's on a short list of four people I feel this way about), eh.

Mind you, Nuku was just weird, not socially poisonous, so I'm far happier that he's being successful.

As reprehensible as some of her online shenanigans may be, I have less difficulty accepting her as a decent writer. My recollection of her RP tells me that she was pretty darn good at it.

As Seanan McGuire, she has the October Daye series, the Incrypted series, and the Wayward Children series. I prefer the latter two, though her first series is extremely popular. The first series has shout outs to a lot of old Changeling the Dreaming RP which kind of throws me off. There's also a ton of anthologies and novellas.

She has a pen name as well: Mira Grant. She's written the Newsflesh series (I highly recommend), the Parsitology series, and Into the Drowning Deep, a stand alone novel based on an earlier novella she wrote. She uses the Mira Grant pen name for her works that are more horror/scifi oriented, while under her real name she focuses on urban fantasy.

If you really dig deep, you can probably find her fanfic (both based on genre media and MU* based, and often a combo of both), and her Velveteen series.

                              She's prolific.
