Ten people having a blast is in my opinion more successful than two hundred people that are utterly miserable.

To me longevity counts. I don't care too much for flashes in the pan kind of games; run it for a year+ without losing your players, then you're doing something right.
I really don't care about trying to quantify and capture things like a "right" amount of time to run or the "right" number of people to have.
The one caution I'd offer here is this: if there's a maximum or 'too much' point population-wise, don't be afraid to say so up front. You never know what's going to catch on, and functioning within the limits of what you can comfortably handle is going to create a better experience for all involved.
I've just got a strong urge to make it because it's a place I'd like.
This really is the core of what you need. Feed and nurture it well, and don't overlook its importance.
Too many folks I know hate their projects before they see the light of day/opening/release/etc. If things start going that way, take a break if you have to, indulge a little more in the things that inspired you to do it at all and work a little less, and so on. But keep and feed that. It's important.
There's a reason people call stuff like this 'pet projects'. Think of it like a pet that way: needs feeding and care, needs medicine sometimes, and so on.

@wizz Dude don't worry, if other people like the game they'll have the self-absorbed eulogies on lock down. Going gentle into that good night is probably not going to be a thing.
-
I wouldn't let FATE/FAE games bother you too much. there have been at least four that I'm aware of and I know three of those lasted for at least a couple years each. They may not be massive 100 character games but they were health 10-20 characters over st least a dozen players.
People here hate fate but this is a very very small sample size of the MUing population.
-
@wildbaboons
Do 'people here' hate FATE or are there just some vocal posters who do? I have pretty limited familiarity with the system but I know of it and wouldn't NOT play a game that used it.I hate a lot of things but my hatred is not a reason for anyone who loves them and is willing to do the work of showing players the ropes about them to not make games.
-
@three-eyed-crow A poll is really the only way to find that out.
But I'd bet internet dollars 'most' of us don't have an opinion, and 'many' of us haven't even played on FATE so they wouldn't care.
-
I admit it was a poor generalization. It's more that some outspoken posters given the impression of wide spread disdain.
Personally I think FATE is probably one of the best systems for collaborative MU
-
Any RPG system will have its haters. I personally avoid D20 like the plague. Some folks hate FS3. Others hate Fate. I wouldn't really sweat it. If the game is interesting enough and/or their friends are there, most folks will suck it up and play regardless. And if not? Their prerogative.

FATE's an award-winning, popular system. I was more baffled by the intensity of TNP's opinion and a little frustrated with the way they presented it than concerned they were right, but it's whatever.
-
@tnp that was my game. We averaged sixty approved chars and twenty online. It took people being taught the system but most loved it.
We closed only because of my real life because a thing
I love fate, and I think it is a good system, once you grasp that story comes first..

I really don't think the system matters very much at all. Pick any one and you'll have a tiny percentage of people that are enthused about it and will play it, another tiny percentage that will avoid it, and then an overwhelming majority that are completely indifferent to the choice and do not care one way or the other.
It only matters, in so much that virtually no one that logs in randomly is going to go, 'okay I'll come back as soon as I read these books!' People want to just log in and play. So someone is going to have to invest a huge amount of effort into selling the game to people and acclimating them to a new system, making it fun for them as they do it, and if that happens then people will try it out. If someone isn't prepared to do that, then they won't. It's really simple.
Tons of people kid themselves and say, 'oh yeah that sounds like a fun game, I'll definitely invest the time to get involved, get stories going, AND learn a system while doing it'. Then they get distracted by something and they are gone. That's normal. So someone wanting to get a game going has to pretty much have more enthusiasm than other people, or be reliant on someone else that does.

We're gold there, I AM READY
MY BODY IS READY

If it helps I am one of those people that is uh, not a FATE fan? And I'm interested enough (especially by your enthusiasm for the project tbh) that I'm very likely to come check it out when it gets to that point.
ETA: I will learn it if I have to. I do not want to, but I will.
-
Dunno if it really needed to be said at this point, but I'm shelving this for I'm not sure how long. I was having a ton of fun writing theme files and playing with FATE but I really haven't had the exposure to the hobby I feel like I need to actually run a game in a long time.
Hopefully I can come back to this some day, I am still super fond of the idea.
