@scar said in Spirit Lake: An Original Modern Fantasy Game:
- How long has magic been around for in the modern age, at least as far as is commonly known by PCs? That is, are we talking months? Years? What's our time frame to compare 'veterans' and 'newbies'?
There is no magic in the modern age. PCs have no frame of reference for it. If they do, it's the same frame of reference we have in the real world. Myths, works of fiction, etc.
I like there are no veterans around. It sets the stage where PCs are on equal footing, and avoids the XP paradox where OOC oldbies but IC newbies are somehow far more knowledgable than newcomers who happen to be playing weathered wisemen.
Here's to hoping we don't get too many indifferent 'eh, whatever' characters around only a couple of weeks since first discovering they can fling fireballs from their fingertips, too.

@Meg Hashtags are not banned.
#funnygang lives on. I was seriously worried for about .2 seconds.

So I've revised my concept somewhat; I'm going to do the vet, but she'll be working for the National Park to help with the wildlife. Which doesn't mean people can't come to her for their birdies and doggos and kitties (or goats or horses etc.). She is also has more than a passing interest in cryptozoology so you know, anyone interested in going on adventures to observe or join expeditions to explore for the purpose of learning about/discovering new magical creatures, she's your huckleberry.
Edited to Add: Yes, I know vets generally specialize, but for the purposes of RP hooks I'm snapping my reality suspenders and allotting her a more broad scope of practice.

A park ranger vet doubling down on small town pets/ranch animals seems realllllllly plausible! Also, I love the idea.
I'm gonna app in a painter/sketcher who will basically be trying to make fieldguides for all the strange animals and stuff, so yes. Adventure Time is a go.

@cupcake You might find the info here useful: https://www.parkrangeredu.org/biological-science-technician-jobs/
Also: https://www.nps.gov/romo/learn/management/staffandoffices.htm
Also useful to anyone else who might be thinking about working at the park.

@tat Thank you! She won't be a ranger per se, but she apparently can work for the Ranger Service as a wildlife vet: https://www.nps.gov/nature/careers-kevin.htm
(he's a wildlife vet. I'm not just randomly linking to some dude named Kevin.)
-
@cupcake i follow this hottie wildlife vet.
Dope concept.

@meg Help me come up with a boss Instagram handle and you're on.
@Shincashay Oh my. He is.. oh my.

Okay, this is kind of creepy. I've been to Grand Lake for holidays. My husband grew up in the area. I know that place, and know that Miss Miyauchi's hamburgers are the best in the world...
You guys had better have Miss Miyauchi's hamburgers in there.
-
@vorpal I have been camping in Grand Lake. I think I am the one who originally suggested the place as the setting for the game, and it just turned out perfect, I think.
-
Bless you, @meg , it's a fantastic idea! If you don't have any Grand Lake locals on staff, you can always shoot my husband questions of trivia or history of the place that may not be easily found.
-
@vorpal yes, please ask him if he has been having any weird dreams lately that might be focused around a lake, beckoning him back to his home town.
-
@meg ... now his recent penchant for idly flipping through canoe catalogs makes sense.

I'm puzzled by the magical orders on the website. It does specify that anyone interested in fleshing them out should contact staff but would you be allowed to fundamentally change them? Is it just an alpha write up / work in progress? https://spiritlakemu.com/wiki/magical_orders

Magical orders are historical and no longer in existence - but might become relevant to plots. Since we expect to lean heavily into PRPs, players will have some leeway to flesh things out for plot purposes.
Some of the spell descriptions have a symbol next to the name. Is there a help file about this? Thanks.
A potion bottle means that it can be made into a potion. The others are just quick visual representations of the info in the text - whether it is a single target spell or a multi target spell.

ETA: Some smalltown job ideas. It's okay to be humble, ya'll are about to be wizards. https://spiritlakemu.com/wiki/job_ideas
Dibs on the lawyer.

@cupcake lmk when you think of a name and everything, and I will help with an instagram handle!

I've been thinking big-city cop who transfers to Grand Lake to get away from the stress. Because that will totally be stress-free. No, his name will not be Nicholas Angel.
