I know it's an old topic but to this day....

There are still hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions of people on this planet that have refuted society and science and believe in a flat earth. I recently had to remove a family member from my facebook because when given experiments that was done right in front of them to explain various aspects of the 'conspiracies of nasa' refused to see the evidence before them and then instead told me I am simply believing the results into existence because I want the results to come out that way. Holy goodness incarnate, how can someone try and show me "scientific evidence" via videos and second hand knowledge when when I show them actual scientific evidence before their very own eyes that's just "magic" that I have conjured into existence. Please tell me that this hobby protects people from the stupidity of "magic"

I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of participants in this hobby enjoy the wondrous nature of "magic" and the supernatural, yet still understand that the planet isn't fucking flat.

Have you read the Politics section?
-
@derp Politics and base reality are two very seperate things, but no I haven't. Is there flafers there? (flat earthers)
-
the flat earth movement is gaining supporters all over the globe.
-
@ganymede I kinda forgot that angle of the conversation, mostly in that I love magic but very firmly realize it's not in the same reality as me.
-
I can't help but wonder how many of these flafers are just giant f'n trolls that are messing with the rest of us, but secretly go home and laugh and say, "but yeah, no, then I got them to believe I think the world is flat, and a couple of them even agreed, trololol".
@magee101 I also tend to put flat earthers in the same category as anti-vaccers, frankly, which has me ESPECIALLY f'n pissed lately, as we've actually got a measles outbreak very very very near where I live. In fact, I may have visited some of the places where contagious people also went. Thankfully I'm immunized, and don't plan on being around at risk folks any time soon, but it's still fury inducing.
-
The difference between flat-earth era and anti-vaxxers is that the latter is concerned to be one of the top ten health threats in the United States.
-
@ganymede Oh I know. I just put them in equal categories as far as being "people who don't know their ass from a hole in the wall." So far, flat earthers are mostly harmless? I guess? But yes, I think my post demonstrated that I'm fully aware at how fucking dangerous those moron anti-vaxxers are.
-
Anti-vaxxers made me real nervous when I was immunocompromised.
-
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck anti-vaxxers. My son is in high school. FOUR kids in his grade got measles last year. I know it doesn't seem like a huge number... but goddamn. All it takes is one. Just one unvaccinated kid to start an epidemic. Thankfully we're in an excellent school system and the nurse caught all four of them right away, sent them home immediately with notes, had talks with their parents, then sent out an email that afternoon to every parent alerting them of the small outbreak and what to watch for, just in case.

At least that one was contained at the school. We've got 19 confirmed cases out here, and some of the infected were at an airport, a basketball game, an IKEA, and other high traffic areas.
PDX airport is the worst. That airport has heavy -international- traffic. Some idiots could be sending measles to anywhere in the f'n world about now.

I dont really see the harm in some idiot thinking the earth is flat. Seems like a dumb but harmless thing to think of, so why be so angry? Antivax people are literally harming people with their stupid ass ideas, seems like a group of people that deserve active scorn. Flat earthers are just amusing in comparison.

@too-old-for-this part of the issue may also be people not keeping up with boosters, not that they're never been vaccinated.
At least this is what we were told when I got knocked up and my kids were all in secondary school. The whole family got a booster (including me and my husband) while I was still pregnant because while all of us had been vaccinated fully for it in the past, there was a risk that the effectiveness had lessened (note, not disappeared) at the 8-10 year mark.
If I'm not mistaken it's now actually highly encouraged that young adults get another series of vaccines at 18 (even if they're not going off to university), including MMR. I think that's an excellent idea! If there's an outbreak at your kiddo's school, I would consider getting them a booster. It will not harm them, and they'll be set up nicely for another decade or so at the strongest level of immunity!
-
@mietze My son was actually re-vaccinated against Tdap, MenB, Pneumococcal, Hep A & B, Polio, MMR, and HPV a few years back when he went out of country during summer break. So he's fine! But I will agree that the vaccine requirements for school kids is probably not the best. I also know there was a huge talk hosted at the school last week about how vaccines are required for school and that anyone whose child does not meet the requirements will be suspended until they do. So I'm fairly confident in saying at least ONE kid was never vaccinated in the first place.

That's just crazy talk.
Everyone knows the earth has to be round because it's hollow.
-
Hey, don't knock the hollow earth. One of the best RPG campaigns I've ever run was in Hollow Earth Expeditions, with danger archeologists beating up Nazi dinosaur wranglers at the center the earth.
Flat Earthers, on the other hand, are willfully ignorant, which is worse than being just stupid.
-
@tyche that doesnt look very hollow
-
@too-old-for-this If 99 kids are vaccinated and 1 is not, doesnt only that 1 kid get sick?
