To be fair that's only a case in point outside of established military functionality, but it's a hair not worth spending time splitting too much. It's a wonderful story, but not what I was talking about.

this might come as a surprise, but not everyone likes your particular jam of silly fantasy. I haven't seen a star wars move in its entirety since I was a child in the 80s, and I don't really remember much beyond not caring.

Yanno, I've heard that there's this caste of really really really really intelligent and like super highly educated people with all kinds of articulation who don't have the time to dedicate themselves to silly fantasy-based entertainment.

Having derailed this thread, I'm going to do my best to re-rail it.
I like the Dark Men but I'm struggling with how to thematically have them pose a threat. In my last scene I wrote it so that their attention was displayed by a small area of woodland going totally still in the middle of an oncoming storm making everything windy, and a fog rising out of the forest edge. But I'm not sure if that's too physical for them?
Of course I can just retroactively have it be done by a shadowy human working for them, so it's not a huge deal, but it does have me wondering.

My understanding is that the Dark Men don't typically manifest physically very much at all - they mostly drag people into Dreams (some of which CAN be fairly subtle) and torment them there. But never in 'beat you up directly' sort of way; they don't have a physical body and aren't, that any PC knows, directly targetable or killable. They're mostly the dark whispers and subtle influences that gradually drive you mad - feelings of being watched, whispers at the edges of your consciousness, psychic torments, eventually Dreams.
But! That sounds pretty cool as a Thing, whether it is a Dark Men Thing or just a Thing, and no one on grid knows a lot about them. There's a lot from the Veil that can pose threats - it doesn't have to be the Dark Men.

I think @Pyrephox gave you a good answer. They're meant to have the meta, OOC knowledge that you as a player have about your character - what buttons they can push to scare/sadden/anger your toon. If the forest suddenly going eerily still freaks out your character? Then they're happy.
As for physically hurting someone... They can do it in Dreams, or they can lean on people in the real world to get them to do it for them (this has underpinned the Billy the Ghoul plot), or they can just not inflict actual physical harm.
If you're having troubles or want to bounce ideas, I highly recommend pinging on the Questions channel or forum on the game. We have a lot of really friendly players that are cool about brainstorming.

As for what there is to be afraid of? Dreams are our main source of terror (psychological and otherwise). Dreams can be player run plots, ST/GM'd stories, etc. We also currently have a few plots going involving: a) a serial killer, b) real-world criminal dealings, c) a flu, d) a cursed object and those are just the GM'd plots.
