I am so, so lucky. My boss knows I have ADHD, and if I'm in a groove, he knows I can look at an email and not absorb/respond.

Like today, when he scheduled our one on one, while I was on lunch. And I didn't RSVP/realize it until a half hour before the meeting.

I hope this video doesn't link at a time stamp. Doesn't look like it from the URL. Anyway, it's a video in which a therapist uses the Will Ferrell comedy Elf to discuss ADD/ADHD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj6RDTMknPo

@wretched And now I realize that yes, in fact, a trained monkey can do my job because I do my job... and I was trained.

"You've cancelled a couple of appointments."

"Yeah, sorry. I got called in to work, and my schedule got messed up when I had to cover someone stuck in quarantine. And I've got some problems with keeping track of schedules. I'm, y'know, seeing someone about it."

@insomniac7809 The lack of followup for ADHD patience is atrocious, you know... considering.

We were playing a game, for work. Big boss decides to email, versus just verbally ask, and the questions were "Who was the lead in..." and then a list of christmas movies to list with the names of actors to match them.

I'm going through the list, and I'm like ... Wonderful life? Jimmy's not on the list!
                              Etc., etc.
So I Video skype called the big boss, ... and she messed up the sheet. She cut off part of it somehow. -- I had been late opening the email, working on something. So other people had to know, and just... didn't say anything. And yes, this is for a prize.

@auspice So it isn't that I'm just a horrible money manager? I really buy these things I want, because it gives my brain a hit?

It's usually a combo of things with adhd. It's the dopamine reward, the lack of impulse control, the poor executive functioning that makes long-term planning difficult... yeah, it's a struggle.

@faraday I thought there was just something /wrong/ with me.

I may be crying. I mean, I have enough power to make sure all the needs are met before wants, but..

                                          I am 100% the same.

One of my courses in college discussed how it's important for creatives if/when they make it big to get an entertainment lawyer and an accountant both because we are traditionally bad with money.

And finding out it was like....a common thing with people like me made me feel a lot better.

I'll be real with you: when I called my bank yesterday and asked if they could..forgive some overdraft charges (I forgot my car payment was set to go through and it caused a cascade) and the lady was like 'of course. This is just a tough time. You've been responsible with your account.'

I've never heard those words before. It made me feel really good.
So I get it I really really do

@macha It gets rough, especially around the holidays. I want to buy. Not for me, for the people around me. Because seeing them get that gift is a huge 'I did good'. Not just the dopamine, but as someone who struggles with interpersonal relationships, the response itself. So having to try and keep from overextending my 'play' money to get that gets really nasty. Instead of 'well I should get a gift for X, Y, and Z because they have been my friends for five years and have helped me through SO MUCH' it ends up 'well I just got gifts for J, I, T, and F... and I got two gifts for X, Y, and Z because...' and then I realize that I have like... no money left to pick up ice cream or get a pizza, etc.

So no. There is nothing wrong with you. Its a very real, very difficult to manage, thing.
