@silverfox said in The Work Thread:

All the kids I've tested have fallen a full grade level, if not more.

      :offers virtual teddy bear basket:

It sucks so much for teachers and students right now.

But if it's any consolation, remember that almost every schoolkid in America is "behind" where they would have been without covid. Some more than others, of course, but our old measures are not meaningful yardsticks in this environment.

Echoing what other folks have said, but my first thought, too? "Only a grade behind? seriously? you're doing SO GOOD" -- from what I'm hearing (anecdotal only) from People, there are a lot of children that are essentially going fully feral right now. Your kiddos are doing well enough that you were actually like, capable of testing them? I'm impressed! Another teacher friend had a similar complaint about their testing of kids except hers was "I can't even get them to do it!!!"

eta: which isn't meant to imply that you don't have a reason to be stressed. of course you do, and it's very reasonable, but it is LIKELY that you are being way worse on yourself than the situation calls for.

I know all of these things at a purely mental level, but my heart for sure isn't feeling it.

          Thanks. ❀

So I was running errands today and had the Spotify daily drive on and my npr snippet said that the testing they've done has shown that while kids have fallen behind.... It's not as far as they'd feared. Like to a surprising extent. But that yes more at risk students are the ones further behind.

Still overall it sounds like the people looking at these numbers are pleasantly surprised by what they're seeing and hey that's a bit of good news of late yknow?

FEMA training is usually like, awful. Awful and boring. I'm doing a class right now that absolutely is NOT either of those things, but it is completely consuming my entire brain, leaving pretty much nothing at all for the rest of my job or life. Whole freaking week of this.

Finally - finally - got the official offer for the job.
                This is real. It's happening.
I still have to make it through December, but come Jan 4th I'll be employed again. Doing the sort of work I love. Working from home (possibly permanently as opposed to just during covid; during the interview they said it was going well enough for the team they were looking at making it a permanent transition). Making more than I did at my last job.

So the FEMA training I was doing this week was (I thought) above my paygrade, but I was taking it to be able to support our current team. It looks like ACTUALLY, I am going to get a new assignment πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„ in relation to the COVID crisis. I'm pretty excited. Emergency management is definitely something I'm starting to really get nerdy about, the more I get into it. They are gonna let me make PLANS, guys.

I'm happy for this, of course, but the way you said that makes me mildly concerned.

I like plans. Planning. Especially this sort of thing, where you have a clearly defined framework to work within. I get objectives, what resources are available, and access to knowledgeable experts. I have to turn that into something people can execute to meet the objectives. I find it very interesting.

When the person giving you report says, "And I took all the trash out because I don't leave halls like that." Yeah, that's a normal thing you to say unprompted. "And then I came straight home from work without cheating on you because I don't believe in adultery!"

So I just applied for an internal positing at my company.

Into the exact role and department that I've been eyeing up for four years. Under a leader I really like, and whose boss I really like. I've applied for it twice before and the interviewer who'd been pretty clearly using me as a filler candidate for predetermined hires has since left the position, and I've since developed a stronger skillset, job background, and started an MBA.

                              Guys.
