Discworld: The MUSH
-
A note sounds...
Swimming in from the blackness of space, there is a world, resting on the back of four elephants, riding on a turtle...
A place where magic exists, where DEATH is an anthropomorphic personification and where a librarian can be an orangutan.
Welcome to Discworld MUSH!
Set in Ankh-Morpork, we have set our roleplaying game in a place where belief is real, where barbarian heroes drink alongside wizards, where witches use headology to fight their battles, and where you are welcome to write your own story. We know that the biggest fear of playing on this game is letting Terry Pratchett's writing down but in the words of the patrician, Vetinari, "We play and are played and the best we can hope for is to do it with style."
In our universe, down the trousers of time from Terry’s, you can be a Lord or a Lady, a thief or a wizard, a troll or a dwarf. You can play political games, spend time in the Mended Drum, or brawl in the Shades. Be part of a Guild, or be unguilded - this is a world where any story can be told. Be a politician or a beggar.
We are now opening for beta testing, with limited places to match our limited staffing capacity!

Come join us! We're a few starting up RP. You can join the grid even before being approved with the caveat that you best avoid some stuff so it won't have to retconned before you get approval - but approval shouldn't take long. There's already two different plots going on.
I need Watchmen colleagues. You know you want to.

My question is is there a game system behind it or is it just a freeform?

It's using FS3.

How is it if you've never read any of the books?
-
There's news files detailing what you need to know, plus people in game that has extensive knowledge about Terry Pratchet's world. I've read a few books, so I'm that amateur that knows a little, but I use those news files when in doubt, or ask on channel.
The setting is basically late 1800s if you compare with RL equivalent. There's some steam-punkish elements coming in. There is magic, but it's not used extensively, for various reasons.
All in all? It's not terribly complicated, and theme files will cover the bases

We're really happy to guide you, and there are so many fan based info sites to support you.

I've totally lurked on the server, but I am afraid I just don't have the brain power to launch into a new world.
Once I can scramble myself I really would love to play though.

You'll be welcome but we get the energy thing. Half the server and the whole of the staff (aka me) have had the delights of flu. ️

A bit more general info - there's a rather heavy European influence, in the manner of players, right now. I'm European, Jinshei is, the expert on Discworld lore is European. So, Discord chat might be a bit quiet during US evenings - we're ASLEEP. Well, some are, I should be asleep but I'm not and I'm being stupid and going to bed soon.

Oh god, I LOVE this idea!

I've only been in two scenes but my character has already done an anti-burglary, together with two vampires, and returned stolen jewelry under the logic that if the jewels are returned, the crime never happened - so they broke in where they were stolen and put them back. This, of course, because otherwise the jeweler would be unhappy, the vampire who happened to carry the jewels would be unhappy cause everyone would assume he stole them, the Watch would be happy cause they don't have to do paperwork. And no, he didn't steal them to begin with. (He's a watchman who used to be a thief.)
That's how you fight crime. You make it go away entirely - to have never happened.
Edited to add: https://discworld.mush.website/scene/9 - in case someone wanna poke at a log.

Given the confusion with discworld mud, we're considering rebranding as ankh-morpork mush...
-
@JinShei Makes sense to me. Could have an undertitle referencing Discworld too.

Ankh-Morpork: drain of the discworld?
-
@WildBaboons Some of us are horrible lore nerds who do in fact have memorised most of 41 novels, three movies, two animated movies, a few theatre plays, and a number of short stories, plus the cast for the upcoming Watch series.
Thing is, we don't bite.
Discworld runs on archetypes and tropes. You don't need to know much beyond the very basics of fantasy literature to be able to follow what's going on. Pratchett wrote about people and fantasy tropes foremost, setting second. Sure, some references will go over your head, but when they do -- we're happy to explain. All in all, I say come on over, we'll probably spoil the heck out of the best books but it'll be worth it.

@JinShei Ankh-Morpork: Where the best meet and the worst thrive.
Ankh-Morpork: Where your boots know the names of the streets better than you do.
Ankh-Morpork: Our vampires don't sparkle.
Ankh-Morpork: Join the Watch before the Watch joins you.
Ankh-Morpork: We'll rule you wholesale.I'm for it. A number of friends have declined invitations with 'no thanks, already tried that a few years back' and they are clearly confusing us with DiscworldMUD. Probably best to sort that out or we'll have a very confused, partially shared player base. The time to rebrand is now, not later.
I suggest keeping the website url though, or at least redirecting from it, so that people Googling for "discworld game" are likely to find us as well, based on the algorithm.
