Magee101 requested their account be banned or deleted. That is why they are now banned, because we do not normally delete accounts or posts.
At the time it was thought that making a big deal about this after they had already posted they were leaving (the request was made after they posted that) would not be productive.
But as there seems to be some misinterpretation as to why that ban happened, clarity is given now.
Maybe that would have happened anyway once the admin had fully waded through everything. But if you send a PM requesting to be banned and there is not really a reason to not grant that request, then that is what will happen.

Might I recommend, in cases such as these, that an "Inactive" or "Retired" group is created for these such cases? Seeing "banned" with a bright red background does cause one's mind to wander.

Making us work is, in itself, a bannable offense.
We'll discuss, though.

I don't really get why it needs to be marked at all? If you're gonna quit a site, just... don't come back? Marking it as banned sends a weird message.
-
@faraday But how we would all know he quit unless he made it a point to tell staff to ban him?
/sarcasm
-
"Out of sight/out of mind" isn't as effective as "Out of sight/No longer has keys to the house even if it comes back to mind". I respect staff just letting us know they requested the ban and that the banning isn't because of some other issue. People do love a good mystery.

Password reset works pretty well for that too.
-
@faraday I've done that before. Change the password to some random pounding of keys like jb4i48vuHABnw9c8!#34 and then logout.

How did you find my e-mail password?!?
No lie. My middle name is literally "BruteForce".

That's hot af.

Agreed.
I'll encourage their decision; people who want their account permanently deleted often do so because they don't trust their own judgement. I sympathize with them and will help them randomize their password and give them the most sincere hope that their absence from the forum, the game, this part of their life is for the best of them. I'm not a monster.
But it can be too much to ask admin to make an exception that can disrupt the forum or game in general. Bane made a habit of deleting accounts so there was no on-forum record of any of his puppet accounts saying dumb things coming back to be used against him. Not that he cared, but hey. On games, this would also remove references from many subsystems.
I can get behind the idea that flagging with "inactive" or "gone" is better than ghosting. If people are going to read a sudden 'gone' tag as "rage-quitting", that says more about them.
-
For the record, the reason we don't delete accounts is the way nodeBB handles the event, since it can lead to all their posts which means threads will disappear if they were started by that account.
It can also point to situations like what Theno posted where history is effectively rewritten and there's no record of their posts any more.

As a note, it already does this, given that you've got it set up to blank all the posts by the banned party.
-
@Derp That's not the case, tho? Banned people's posts aren't automatically purged when they're banned. You can find plenty of posts by banned peeps.

I think magee blanked a ton of their posts manually
-
Huh. Maybe I'm just used to seeing the manually blanked ones then, because every time I see the big red BANNED it just shows a big gray space.
-
@Derp I think(?) the admins here delete the posts of a particular repeatedly-banned individual, since he keeps circumventing the ban and coming back.
Clearing his history on the site seems like a good way to discourage him from coming back and picking up where he left off.
-
Yes, Magee deleted a lot of their posts before they requested to be banned. Banning does not automatically delete posts. There is one poster whose posts we do sometimes delete after they are banned again, due to their content.
