There wasn't a thread within the last year I could necro which is sad.

I finished an amazing one called The Library Book that details the evolving nature of libraries by structuring it about the story of the 1986 Los Angeles Central Library fire. It was pretty amazing.

Then I stepped back and read two young adult fiction books (the last two in the series by Shannon Hale) in the Books of Bayern Series, River Secrets and Forest Born.

Now I'm reading Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson talking about his work around capital punishment in our country and it's amazing but also slowly destroying my faith in humanity.

What books are you reading?

Working my way through "The Final Days" after re-reading "All the President's Men" earlier this year. Spoiler, Richard Nixon was a bit difficult to work for.

I'm trying to get back into the habit of rotating fiction to nonfiction and so on and eating through some of the "I own these but haven't read them" books on my shelves.

The film of Just Mercy was absolutely brilliant. I loved it. Gut punch. Haven't read the book tho.

Been rereading some Heyer. I need fluff rn. Just finished The Talisman Ring last night.

Nothing new. It's a book I've had since my High School psychology class, called Lovey: A Very Special Child. It's actually written by a special needs teacher/therapist from I believe the 70s. She wrote the book to give a glimpse in her earlier years trying to earn her degree and struggles in the school system with such children. The book isn't even in print anymore and my copy is so worn down, it's taped together. It's one of my favorites and I've recommended to everyone.

There is nothing wrong with rereading. You never catch everything the first time.

@silverfox I'm an avid reader and do it all the time. Just sometimes there are favorites and this one I've put through the ringer lol I wasn't even born in the 70's but how far we've come and yet..how much we still have to learn? This book is amazing to me. And sad. I love it. I almost went into teaching because of it.

No, I'm afraid I didn't. I'm a novice at these things unfortunately.I was guided step by step how to find the hog pit after almost a year of knowing it existed but not being able to figure out how to find it, and I don't recall the process. I'm afraid this restricted reading place puts me in the same boat again. Now I know it exists but haven't the faintest idea how to access it.

Recently devoured Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff. I am anxiously waiting the TV adaptation.

I'm on 7th complete reread of original Dune books ( every two to five years I do another). I've read Dune through God Emperor many more times. I'm on Chapterhouse. Miles Teg is one of my favorites. I'm very much into the last three (I'm not into anything done after Frank). I'd jam on a space supers mu based on the myriad of talents in the line of Atriedes in the time of the Honored Matress.

Currently reading the Broken Empire trilogy. About 75% of the way through Prince of Thorns. I absolutely love it.

Not only is the protagonist an evil monster, hitting all the right grimdark feels for me, the imagery is amazing, and I am very much enjoying the story. Especially the part where:

You get about halfway through the book and realize that this isn't some fantasy medieval universe, it's about 1500 years into the future of a nuclear apocalypse. Tall Castle is a buried skyscraper, and the 'empty halls with wide ramps' from the 'necromancer' part of the book is an old parking garage.

It keeps me constantly on my toes, and challenges the assumptions that you make about every heroic story, and what anyone 'deserves'. Can't wait to read more of them.

I finished Just Mercy and I can't decide if I want to give up on humanity or have some small sliver of hope that things might improve.

Rather than confront that though, I am now reading Dryer's English and it's just as whimsical and tongue in cheek as I could ever have wished after a heartbreaking story.
