@auspice That sounds like the amazing-as-fuck doctor that replaced the previous omg-you-are-such-a-shit doc for us a decade or so back. He's maybe 15 years older than us and is not a douche; the previous doctor was a former Navy doctor and his practice was almost exclusively elderly patients. (Since my grandparents and parents went to him, I ended up stuck with him, too, since he was who we knew and who was originally covered when I had their insurance.)

Previous doctor: "Take two tylenol 2x day, that will be $40."

Period. Always. Often enough, I would spend a week half dead taking Tylenol before I'd even go in because I knew what he'd say, and I could tell him: "Tried it, did nothing." Changed nothing. I think once he gave me antibiotics too weak to kick the flu I had and I had to go to the ER. Once, a scrip for 5 painkillers -- because I broke a rib. He refused to believe I broke a rib until he pressed down so hard on it, it popped in and out of joint under his hand and I screamed so loud it cleared his waiting room. In both cases, despite knowing I was broke as fuck, he refused to ever allow generics -- it was always the brand name. Those 5 painkillers were over $200. -.- Everything from migraines (which he refused to believe I had despite my grandmother having them and several other extended family members of mine having them) to bronchitis was 'because you're overweight'. ?!?!?!?!?!?!?! If I was a pettier soul, I'd track down his grave to pour a urine sample on it and leave a pile of monopoly money for the $650 or so his favorite lab always charged to test it in 90s $s.

Current doctor: I have no idea how these two ever knew each other for one to take over from the other, they're so night and day. Current doc, knowing we're broke, hands us samples that he keeps piles of on hand for precisely this reason -- especially for short term meds like z-packs and so on. Always prescribes generics if there is one (thankfully, there always has been, and if it's between two options, one with and one without, he always tries the one with a generic FIRST). Does not instantly go to 'all of your problems are just because you're fat'. (He will say 'losing weight will help with your back' because DUH, but even he knows that's a duh and presents it as such. )

So, someone has lent me car while out of town for a week and a half.

On top of it being amazing having a window of time being free from relying on people for rides or standing around waiting for a rideshare to arrive... I had something happen tonight I've never had happen before. Not once. In my entire time as a driver.

There was only a quarter tank left (I got it with about a third before I went to work today and I went to see a movie after work because hey, I don't have long left on my first free month with MoviePass and I should take advantage!) and I figured I'd put some gas in.

I authorized $30 because I remembered the last I was driving, $20 never seemed to go far.

It cut off at $26.

That has never... ever happened to me. I actually briefly froze because I had no idea what to do in that situation. Obviously I realized a second later: oh, yeah, it only charges however much gets used.

But I've never actually been able to... authorize more than I need. It was super surreal, but it's also really nice to have this brief period of time of being... free.

Sooooooo, my university email account is still active, even though I graduated (as an adult student) back in 2015. I never really use it because it's basically just full of spam trying to get me to donate money (I still owe you fuckers $43,000, so you piss off asking me for more while I'm still paying you) and reminding me relentlessly about when basketball tickets go on sale, since that's a huge thing at that school.....

....Except to check every week or so for messages from Unidays. Yeah, I still have access to a student discount site, so yeah, I'm going to use it. Thanks, extra 15% off overpriced sweaters at ModCloth!

I logged in today to see that right now, they're having some huge up-to-60% discount off promo going on. Naturally, I browsed the list to see if any of them were sites where I'd been window shopping and waiting for things to go on sale.

And now I can't stop laughing. 'Cause one of the sites listed as having a discount promo? Is a sex toy site. Thanks to my affiliation with a very, very Catholic university, I can now get a 25% discount off of sex toys.

The irony. It is delicious.

I'm down 14 pounds in just under a month. If I lose one more pound by the end of this month, I will have hit my self-imposed goal.

I also have not lost a shred of lifting capacity in the process. I was seriously carrying a lot more fat than I thought.

And I didn't have to give up my loved ones: bacon; sausage; cheese; fatty foods; etc.

@ganymede Just be cautious going forward, lawyer-bot. 2 lbs/week is the typically recommended 'ideal' healthy maximum rate- although for most people water loss gives it a nice boost during the first few weeks.

@arkandel Early days of a high protein, low carb die+t tend to be blazing fast. It tends to settle out to 2lbs/week after a month or two, but that first month or two are like a bolt from the blue.

It is not a joke that I could eat a half pound of bacon daily and lose 5lbs/week. I mean, that's just plain insane and a little terrifying on many levels. (Before you ask, my cholesterol is ideal and was when I was on that die+t, too. Even at 'damned near dead', the docs were simply baffled by how perfect all my numbers were, 'cept for blood pressure, which sometimes was a little higher than average on the high end -- I wonder why! Downright ooky. Just wired for it, like a proper carnivore. Gnaw-nom-nom-nom.)

I met someone a few years ago MU'ing. Thrown together oddly by @Gingerlily Fromt hat blossomed a pretty damn good friendship through thick and thin, someone my husband calls my work wife/second spouse. Just a super great friend.

Moving to another country hasn't stopped the phonecalls even. She still calls when her work day is done and I have finished putting kids down for naps. She travels for work and makes sure I know where her flights are landing, and when, so that if god forbid something happens, someone knows where she was and when. And food porn. She always sends me picture of all the food she eats on business trips. She's got my back, I got hers. Thanks for that hook up way back when Gingerlily.

My laptop met death by leaky sippy cup of almond milk yesterday in a cascade failure of perceived kindness. All afternoon and evening, we ressurected a really old one that barely functions. I hadn't talked to work wife in days as she was business tripping it. All she had to go on was a post to a game, with my scarcity due to laptop death. I'm elbow deep in dogs and toddlers and 911 emergency dog dropping in for some folks who's booked sitter either just dropped the ball, had something happen,who knows but we're running around town taking care of a bunch of dogs we didn't expect to take care of, including one out in the countryside, ass end of nowhere.

I get back into service radius and there's a message waiting. She's ordered me a laptop, it'll be there next friday. That while it may not be an emergency to me, it is to her.

I love my work wife. I love my Katey. My best friend who has my back, thick and thin. So yeah. RL thing I love? The kindness of other strangers (Seriously there were some very generous strangers) and my work wife. So now, I just gotta hang in there on a laptop with missing keyaps, missing mouse button caps, hangs up on itself every five minutes for about 8 seconds, and whines about windows 10 and reminds me that she's a 4 ram girl, and why am I even....

I'm a blessed person, with good friends.

Once again, Tabletop Simulator with Discord chat is the shit. Hearing people I've Mu*d with laugh and swear at each other (at the same time) has amazing healing properties.
