I grew up reading Isaac Asimov's Foundation. Words cannot express how much I love that series, or the impact it had on young-Arkandel growing up.
It all appealed to me. The idea of this vast, sprawling universe set in the vast future where humanity has spread to the stars but forgot where Earth resided, and the concepts it introduced to define what humanity even means. The way it drove the point - again and again - of intellectualism being nearly synonymous with pacifism ("violence is the last resort of the incompetent"), and the manner its characters as well as the plot showcased it.
And then I watched the first episode of Apple's Foundation. Special ops teams coming in, guns blazing! Explosions! Poolside sex scenes! Right in the first ten minutes!
... Sigh.
I liked it fine. But then again, Foundation as it was written can't really be translated to anything entertaining on-screen unless you want, like, lol, Neil deGrasse Tyson or someone narrating with pretty visuals. Which, I mean, it could be nice. But it's not what they were going for.
They have to distill it to character stories and they're doing that. Just because the message is 'intellectualism is synonymous with pacifism' (an interesting concept that is absolutely flawed for so many reasons, starting with the moralizing of intellect), doesn't mean the characters in the world won't blow shit up and have sex in the pool.
But that's just my take.

Oh this disappoints me like woah. Foundation is not an action book. Even a little bit.
EDIT:
If they wanted to turn an Asimov book into a movie (I Robot, I'm still pissed at you for taking like... all those short stories and turning them into a movie rather than, like, picking ONE and making something awesome...) then do the Robots of Dawn RIGHT.
-
@ganymede I missed that, though I shouldn't be surprised to hear them.

I agree. And @Coin does have a point in saying the series isn't exactly easily filmable, just because the sheer exposition you'd need to do it justice is probably going to be boring to watch.
But they chose to film it! As you say, I, Robot was an abomination. They turned it completely around from the original works (in which robots are essentially benevolent, logical beings and it's human preconceptions and fears that cause problems) and turned it into KILLER ROBOTS WANT TO WIPE OUT HUMANITY. That's the opposite of what the work was about. The exact opposite. I am not saying that, Isaac Asimov said that in every essay he wrote on the topic - he even gave it a name, the Frankenstein Complex. But that's the movie they made!
And this is also it. Foundation is about certain very interesting concepts. How the meaning of freedom differs between individuals and large groups, for example.
What it is not about is action heroes blowing up spaceships. I am not saying that a show about blowing up spaceships can't be a lot of fun! But then why on earth would they go and pick this franchise to do that with?

I think you're making a lot of assumptions? First season isn't over and I think they touch on a lot of those things you want to see, they just also do it within the framework of a galaxy-wide arms/religion/economic conflict. Have you watched all the episodes?
In any case, I don't tend to have too many pearls to clutch when it comes to adaptations. I don't usually care. The only things that have ever bothered me, really, were the whitewashing in Avatar by Shyamalan and the whitewashing (and horrible representation) in SyFy's Earthsea miniseries.

Really? This is the only thing that ever bothered you about the movie?

I no longer give a shit about Jared Leto after his behavior on the set of Suicide Squad, and will not watch his movies.
I no longer give a shit because of all of the rape allegations.
Especially considering how many of them relate to underage girls specifically.
Like, the level of anger that washes over me when that man's face comes on screen is entirely reasonable. It is also profoundly unhealthy given that there is not a damned thing I can do about his continued wealth and fame.

Wait what? I haven't heard any of these outside of...Reddit and things like that which, well, Reddit...Are there actually like news reports from actual news sites or legal things out there accusing him of that? Everyone I know who has met him (my sister included) had only kind things to say so this really comes as a bit of a shock to me?

I didn't get past the first fifteen minutes because I may watch Gossip Girl and Vampire Diaries but I still have some standards.

Basically, women have been accusing Jared Leto of this shit for 20-ish years now and despite the fact that claims keep popping up from various sources again and again and again, they largely get ignored as "rumors" like they did with Cosby and probably will continue to be ignored until one of these sources goes on record with a court of law somewhere.
-
-
@ganymede Dylan Sprouse also did that.

Oh obviously I'm butthurt here, no question about it. These books are important to me. I'm clenching those pearls hard.

I... am not sure what to say. That article in particular claims James Gunn responded to a tweet, but clicking on it says "page does not exist". That website is owned by a Gen Z media influencer company. So I am again...I want to believe women without question, but I'd like to see the actual accounts/accusations on their actual social media rather than things "resposted" on sites I can't determine the credibility of. If there is that much chatter about it though, it is likely true and that makes me so fucking sad. I can't like things anymore. They will always disappoint me.
I shall now go put Stanley Tucci and Dolly Parton inside bubble wrap for protection because I swear to God if they get outted as horrible people somehow, I am gonna just give up on the universe.

I draw the line at Mr. Rogers.
But I also remember an article written about Jimmy Stewart. Apparently during the height of the McCarthy era there was an FBA investigation digging into his past trying to discredit him. The worst they found was that, in his youth, Stewart dabbled in card magic tricks.

Yeah, that's the thing. I would much prefer these accusations be reported in credible sources, with criminal investigations and legal actions attached, for a large number of reasons.
But this isn't the same single account popping up here and there and maybe under this thing every few years when people do a Wayback Machine search or something. It's very similar accusations, made by a number of people, consistently, over several decades. So I think it's pretty safe to say they're likely true. Especially because patterns like this being known in certain circles and no one doing anything about them for years is usually the "backstory" when these people finally do get their ass dragged into the light and/or court, which is what I'm really hoping happens.
It also probably won't because most victims don't come forward when it's just some random asshole and the usual trauma of the "justice" system they're dealing with. Nevermind when there's millions of dollars, a small army of lawyers, and a PR firm screaming "libel" in their face.

Let me put it to you this way.
3STM played Warped Tour. Warped Tour is pretty much how emo got big enough to get out of Hot Topic as a fashion, movement, and style of music. Warped Tour, and similar concert events, are known for rampant sexual harassment. At least, that's what the person who ran the tour said.
If you were young and female, you invited problems. It got so bad that some emo bands stopped going after sexual assault allegations were raised against other artists. Bands like Paramore, for example, stopped going, and if there's someone who understands rape and sexual assault it's probably Hayley Williams.
So I believe them. I believe them because other artists on tour believe them. I believe them because of the repeated allegations. And I believe them because I have little reason to believe otherwise, given how much of an adolescent douchebag Jared Leto presents himself to be.

I have to check, but as far as I know they only played the Warped Tour once, in 2006. I am working though and can't check deeper until later today.
