The good news is that culture is outside of direct evolution, and we can communicate across time and distance about more effective approaches to goals. It's like meta epigentics.

So's polio, but thanks to innovation and a concerted public effort, we've pretty much stopped that shit in it's tracks.

          Just sayin'.

I don’t think Tyche was trying to excuse the behavior, just explain it.

You’re also right, mind you. I mean, look at all the things that women are more natural at than men and that men have tried to keep women out of. Denying nature is also natural.

It's literally impossible to state all of those statistics are rooted entirely in nature when they also can't be removed from their cultures. Like, there are also lots of cultural reasons why men take more risks.

I had a really, really interesting talk with a black coworker about the allegations against Bill Cosby. He claimed there was a lot of skepticism in the black community about the timing of the charges against him. I tried whitesplaining to him that it wasn't because Bill Cosby was black.

I mean, does it make a difference that the guy who pointed it out (that is, pointed out that Cosby had been paying off and trying to silence accusations for decades on the public record) was a black comedian?

Is it though? I was thinking that culture is to a great extent a product of our nature. Anthropologist Donald Brown's Cultural Universals are good evidence of that. That is not to say nurture has no effect on our behavior. I don't believe we are really any different than the ancient Babylonians or Greeks. Sure we've got vastly more knowledge and communication, but we still have the same human nature.

I would suggest those statistics are roughly the same in all cultures. If Sweden is your ideal model, you'll find they have the same accidental death rates and even a higher proportion of men in prison.

@Tyche Yes, "it" is. By which I mean that culture as an entity. The cultures we have? Well, that's another story. We can still hope for cultural level adaptation that mitigates what we consider the negative aspects of our evolution and biology. An example is we are terrible at probability, our brains are wired to route that through emotional nudges, which lack long term ability to affect our decision making. However, math and science and political organization can make up for that innate shortcoming.

                              Can.

I was asked, on Thursday, if I could put up a world cup bracket in the office. I said sure. There were no caveats, no "if..." Just the request from our HR guy.

I let my project manager know (left a message as he was unavailable) that I was taking some time out of my shift each day to do so. About 45 minutes each day.

Had an email today chewing me out for doing so with a "I talked to (HR guy) and he said he told you to only do it if you had availability outside of your normal work."

No. I was never told any such thing. I was just asked to take care of it.

This sort of backtracking is annoyingly common at my job and because I'm not management, no one ever believes me.

Reason #1834 that I need a new job.

@auspice I'd start taking a recorder every time they come up to talk to you. fuck that noise.

@auspice can you tell them to email you those requests? That way at least there's a written record. I did that at my old toxic job and it worked quite well.
