Cheap or Free Games!
-
@Insomnia I personally like the updates. I've found a couple of cool games through this thread, and I try to post when I see a super good deal. I love games.
EDIT to avoid double-posting. It could be kind of fun to have a thread dedicated to new games, not just games that are on sale or free, but games that haven't been released yet that look promising. I've seen a few projects other places that make me eager for their release, so could be cool to trade, find those new games other people might not have heard of.
-
@Insomnia I also like the updates and have found good deals through this thread. Keep em coming!

I think the new expensive games have enough press, with some small and notable exceptions. Maybe a thread like Extra Credits' "Games You May Not Have Tried" would be good.
I also like the cheapies notifications.
-
@Thenomain That's kind of what I was talking about, although I suppose I wasn't clear enough in my post. I've seen a lot of projects on other sites, people starting up new games that look promising, and was thinking about a thread to spread those around. Not so much the big names that everyone's heard of.

Okay so Indie Gala and Bundle Stars have been linked here before, but it never hurts to post them again if you haven't bookmarked them yet. Both these sites have sales going on all through the week. Indiegala is the place most of my money goes when I have it since you can usually get 6 or more games for $3 at the start of the sale. Even if you miss the first 24 hours it's still really cheap.
While it's down right now Groupees is a good one to book mark as well. Not only do they do cheap games, but also books and music and lots of other things. Often they let you build your own bundles. They do this pretty often with Greenlight projects on Steam. (And let's face it, there can be a lot of shit on Steam Greenlight, but they don't seem to pick just random games for it.) During Halloween they had a whole bundle of scary games, music and comics. The other thing I like about Groupees over the other two is that even when a bundle is done, sometimes you can still get it. Most places if a sale is over, that's pretty much it. (I think that's where I pointed @Thenomain to a Professor Elemental collection as well. They have some really random stuff sometimes. Bookmark it! I hope it comes back soon!
Maybe this might be better for the upcoming games thread but GoG (speaking of Steam Greenlight) is going to be getting into that sort of thing as well. Something to keep an eye on. And they are still doing their winter sale.
Maybe once I'm more full of coffee I'll go through and edit the first post with link to things that are always pretty cheap, so people don't have to go hunting and pecking for them.
ETA: I've edited the first post with links to thinks that often has sales.

I'm playing Path of Exile. It's free (with in game purchases that you thoroughly DO NOT need). It's mindless. It's fun.
The game plays a little like Diablo 2 or something of that nature, with a birds eye view, with you running around and clicking things. You level up, you get items, you get gems that give you powers, you have a "passive skill tree" that is friggin' 'uge and allows you to customize out your character. I'm playing in the "Talisman" league, which is actually a sort-of beta for new stuff they're testing. I've found (in this world, at least) that they've made a LOT of things easier, by defaulting certain useful features to ON (instead of having to figure out how to turn them on) as well as making certain items easily findable in game, so you're not stuck looking for that one gem you missed.
The story is pretty convoluted and hard to follow, so don't play it for the story, but instead for the colorful colors.

Don't forget isthereanydeal.com for any particular games you want to spotlight for sales.
-
@Jaded Yup! I've got it on the list in the first post of the thread down at the bottom.

Steam has a Lunar New Years sale going on until Feb 12th. There's a story and you click on a choice and it takes you to that type of games. There is a Pirates vs Ninjas section.

I chose pirates.
Edit to avoid double-posting: I also purchased my 100th game. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

@Thisnameistaken PC MASTER RACE!

Call it a love letter to Gabe Newell. It starts: You broke my heart leaving Half Life 2 on a cliff-hanger, again, releasing four, five, six games instead of another Half Life, but I cannot quit you. I forgive you for everything for making a platform that people want to use, instead of one that the companies want people to use. You used the marketing of the superior to make us love you, and we do. Thank you. XXXOOO.

Except those games that require Uplay. There is no forgiving that.

Well that's not Valve's fault. While they could say, "No, you must use our platform's DRM or none", they chose not to. They know it doesn't make Microsoft or Apple any hard-core allies, and Steam walks that very happy line between corporation and nerd paradise. They no more want to force you over to Uplay than you do, and by selling Uplay-centric games you're still thinking, "Man, I wish this was Steam." They get a cut, they get your loyalty, they win and I suspect they want you to win too but no enterprise is perfect.

True enough. My negative experiences have been so minimal compared to my positive ones. And they've actually done well with a lot of older games, which I'd have to go through hoops to play now without their tweaks. Brilliant business concept. I love games.
Also, if anyone wants they can PM for my steam ID. I don't play a lot of co-op, but now and then. I'd also like to get back into Secret World and could use some buddies.
