Improving MSB
-
I can feel @Glitch twitching but no, this isn't about the platform MSB runs on or asking for more skins but the content itself.
Basically I was browsing through a thread asking how to improve Slashdot earlier (this one to be exact) where a very good point was made. Someone was asking for a "disagree" Mod for posts - as opposed to using that site's equivalent of our downvote button when they disagree with someone - and other posters disagreed with the idea because of how counter-productive it was. The proper way to deal with disagreeing with a post, they claim, is to post back and rebuke it.
Now, personally I don't pay much attention to upvotes/downvotes but I think it could be healthy to discuss this; although they have no real bearing on our posts, do you think we generally downvote when others make an argument we disagree with but is on topic, presents an interesting point of view and contributes to the thread? For that matter, do you think downvoting matters at all?
I mean we're not WORA - WORA was on average a lot more heated than this is. But although I vehemently disagree with some of you people (you know who you are, and you are still wrong about all the things) I still like having a forum like this to debate games, and as much as we're often accused by outsiders of having a hive-mind I think we're pretty good at fostering completely different points of view here.
Thoughts?

No. This isn't a fucking popularity contest.
But I am more popular than a lot of other people here, so fuck you I'm popular.
-
Downvoting doesn't matter because it's fucking anonymous. Upvoting isn't, but downvoting is. It makes no sense to me.
When I downvote something I am declaring, no, bitch, you are wrong in my eyes. Sometimes that's enough, I don't feel the need to even /validate/ something by giving it a response.
Now if I just disagree with something and it's debateable I will make a post instead of downvoting but... I am an unreasonable cunt.
-
I'd love an agree/disagree counter. However, people would still use disagree just because they dislike someone, soooo the answer is hate everyone.
-
@Arkandel I dunno, downvoting feels petty to me. I probably would use downvote if it wasn't anonymous, since then it would feel more like 'No I disagree but I don't have time to post why' rather than 'I just hate your stupid face.' I'm not sure that's great for a forum though, since hearing the reasons why someone disagrees is what drives conversations after all and I'd rather see replies than someone leaving it as a click and moving on.
-
Lots of people here just downvote others because they don't like the person--has nothing to do with what the post itself say. They just go through everything the person has posted and downvote it in a fit of whaaaaaaaaa,
-
I can honestly say, even all the times I got into it with others I never just blindly downvoted. I have downvoted a fair amount of a thread, but it wasn't blindly. I read, and said: WTF Child, you are why it is socially unacceptable to call special needs people retarded anymore.

@Coin It's not actually "lots". There's only two people off the top of my head who are/were the petty "I don't like your face so I downvote everything you write" variety. I also think it's a bit annoying that downvotes aren't visible to users, since I do see it more often as a single note of disagreement on any given post.

Felt like more to me, but I could be wrong. I don't actually see them, so I'll take your word for it.
-
It might be more, but only two have risen to the level of noticeable to me. It's still a relatively small number. Downvotes can be turned off, but I really do see them as a single instance of disagreement/disapproval rather than a tool for pettiness. Otherwise, I'd ask @EmmahSue and @Thenomain if we should turn them off all-together.
I should probably look at making downvotes visible, but as @Arkandel mentioned in the start of this thread: twitching.

I've never really downvoted anyone that I would mind knowing I downvoted them, so it's a non-issue for me. I think lots of people feel the same. With some exceptions of the petty variety.

I dislike anonymous anything on a forum. You want to have your actions/voice seen/heard? You put your name to it.
You want an anonymous poll, make one.
-
I down voted you ITT because you have more Internet points than me, @coin.

I don't know about that, I'm still waiting in rapt fascination for one of your characters to start killing and eating high priced hookers because of your picture here... Elijah Wood, forever freaky and no longer just an innocent hobbit...

If that's what it takes to be someone around here then that's what I'll do!
... how many calories is a high priced hooker?
-
@Arkandel It depends on how many clients she's had that day.
