I think it's also easier if you and the other player go into it knowing who will win, lose, or if the point is for it to be a bitter stalemate. You don't have to decide on how the win/lose will eventually happen (save this for RP!), but you'll likely avoid any feelings of butthurt if the two players walk into it knowing that eventually playerB will take the bad guy role and eventually lose to playerA

Delete the Hog Pit. It'll be fun.

Or just put clear, OOC limitations regarding what's acceptable, and make sure neither player will be a sore loser.

OOC communication is key, yeah, I think. And a game culture that accepts and encourages non-fatal conflicts. So, having ways to throw roadblocks and obstacles at people that aren't all about combat, or taking things away permanently from people.

When I was discussing this kind of thing a few months ago the idea was to focus on the tragedy of two characters who could have gotten along famously, and actually did for a while, but they were vampires and petty things got into their way; they had kept up with each slight and escalated, time after time, so after hitting the grid we were probably headed into scorched earth tactics. Destroy all that the other person cared about, commit one nonsensical mean act after the other until they were both left with nothing but peeves and hatred - but never quite attacking each other directly.

Because the second worst thing to losing would be winning.

I think a perfect(-ish) scenario involves both characters wanting A, but A is only possible if both characters are still around. An example escapes me at the moment, but essentially: killing the other person won't work, neither will taking them out of play in some other permanent fashion, so you have to maneuver the situation--and winning might not even be permanent. It might--and should!--be possible for the opponent to strike back and create a new conflict you can reap for RP.

@Arkandel That would be an awesome relationship. Especially for vampires, who literally CAN nurse grudges into eternity.

I always wanted a Professor X/Magneto relationship - where two people who were very close personally had been split by ideology, and were each passionately committed to destroying the works of the other...all the time hoping that "winning" would make the other person realize that they were Right All Along and they could be besties again.

I stopped playing antagonist characters because of the white hats that would crawl out of the woodwork to jump all over your shit for the smallest of things in a desperate bid to validate their white hatedness. 😕

I would love to see the actual rituals and secret mysteries inherent to joining any number of IC mystery cults and/or secret societies get played out more, not just implied to have happened off-stage. I understand why it isn't done - STs don't have the interest or energy to invest in creating the rituals for the off-chance that people are actually going to be interested in joining their thing, but I really like things like that. Then again, I am also a weirdo who likes scenes involving tutelage and intellectual/philosophical discussion and the revelation of mysteries. Things that might not change the world, but can cause epic changes in a character.

                      Ah, well.

I miss playing in RP that just has action and excitement. I also miss that part of being a player without a look behind the curtain on every game I play on. To clarify I get the sandbox games and the make your own fun situations but I miss the times when I was a player and I didn't know shit about what was going to happen in the story. Go to events, get involved with the meta of a game, RP with other players about those events and that on going story.

With that I miss even picking up some of the slack and running scenes to push plot but I think the big thing I miss in most games I play is that "plot" element. Now, if you feel like replying with something like "Make your own fun!" I want you to A: Look at games like Reno and Eldritch and then think if it really is a sustainable idea for a game to use. I get it in the short term but there comes a point where shit will just fizzle out.

Then when it's all over and the rest of you are ready for Dead Animal Pickup, I'm gonna go balls deep into Dahl. But only because she asked me to. Sweet-like. - Riddick (2013)

I love rituals/cults. I know a handful of others who do as well so when we've been able to coordinate schedules (which doesn't happen often) it's fantastic rp. I actually have many notebooks and regular books collected over the years for inspiration for writing/development! Even 1 on 1 those are awesome engaging scenes.

I love IC nemeses. I have been one and had one quite a few times. What I have sadly learned though is that while I find I rarely have to vet the person I'm going to be frenemies with, since the people who are serious (vs. the Victimize Me! teeheehee People) are almost always awesome...I do now know it's good to know who their friends are. If they hang with ooc white knights it's not going to be worth the ooc drama and headache.

@mietze Have an upvote for truth. You can nemesis it up all day long, both of you having fun and awesome times. But man, if the wrong friends catch wind of it, suddenly you've got a white hat up your ass 24/7 for 'bullying' their poor friend.

That's why if I know I'm going to be someone's nemesis, you can be sure my character will get super pissed at people who interrupt their nemesis-ing.

That's my archnemesis you're messing with. NO ONE GETS TO FUCK THEIR SHIT UP EXCEPT MEEEEEEEEEEE

I have a little brother. I know how this works.

What I have found is the problem come less from IC and more from players who are very strong circle the wagons ooc types and who love to show off their +sheet powers. Usually those folks are very easy to spot with the ooc behavior in scenes/on channel, ect. They can be nice/fun to "their people" but everyone else (especially those that "threaten" their people/group) look out.

Just long experience has made it so that I tend to not hook into frenemy play with anyone who has a possessive partner/group or who has in their friends circle/group someone whose ooc behavior towards people they don't know or on public venues like chat makes me uncomfortable.

I'm a picky bitch, it's true! I just never got into the appeal of playing Vampire. At least, as it seems to be played on MU*s. I can see the appeal of the scrappy, newly-dead trying to maintain sanity in the face of an eternity spent playing meaningless political games with corpses that literally have nothing better to do with their lives.

Dibs on the Ordo Dracul vs. your ... honestly, the Order can be an ideological enemy to just about any other Covenant. >.>

But they're all vampires. And vampires are terrible. 😛

                                          So picky.

I have never been able to understand the appeal of playing the corpses that literally have nothing better to do with their lives than meaningless political games, and...that's the game.

                                          All right. Mage then? [ducks]

Only if I get to throw some goddamned fireballs.

Changeling, then. I woudln't want Paradox to outshine me as your nemesis.
