Unfortunately, those that dox rarely keep their actions to the offending individual.

      They threaten their spouses.
      Their children.
      Their parents.
      Their friends.

      How far does it go?
If you do something that offends, does that mean the lives of everyone you know are forfeit?

But when the sweaty Charlottesville guy complains that his professional life took a hit when his screaming face was over the world in all its tiki-torch-and-polo glory, I find myself profoundly lacking in sympathy.

And, IMO, that isn't doxxing. He was in news articles about the event. Even if people hadn't dredged up his info, it would have been just as easy for an employer to pay witness.

But the topic was about doxxing. About people (or people they recruit/hire) digging up details on someone who isn't so blatantly 'out there.'

Since last night, my 'net has been really bad. Super lagged. Things not loading at all. Gave it the night just in case it was a widespread thing (and had to sleep anyhow!)... but it's just as bad today. So I finally called tech support (after doing whatever I could on my end; reset modem, reset computer......find myself wishing I could afford my own equipment...).

Them: "Did you reset your modem?"
      Me: "Yes."
Them: "Did you just remove the power or did you also remove the coax cable?"
      Me: "Just the power."
Them: "Let's try again, this time removing both cables. You may have some feedback built up in the coax."
Me: "Sure. That sounds like a real thing."

He was quiet for a long moment after that.

But seriously, we wonder why people end up with these really stupid ideas of how tech works and it can so often be traced back to someone in support saying some bullshit.

Yeah, you caught him. A huge portion of people say they have restarted / reset when they have not, and it will solve the problem. So they have to get you to do it without calling you a liar.

Here's the thing tho: I've worked tech support. I know that you need to ensure they've reset the modem.
And it's as simple as: 'Can you restart it while we're on the phone so I can watch how it behaves as it boots up?'

      That's it.
It's not lying and it helps the customer feel like you are actually paying attention to their issue.

@Auspice Query: how is the person on the other end supposed to know that you worked as a tech? Did you offer him your resume?

I always lay out all the steps I've taken at the beginning of a call.
I don't know about y'all, but I'm generally capable of surmising if someone knows what they're talking about vs. needs hand-holding.

But again, I'm not cool with someone lying. I mean, imagine if a restaurant employee lied about what a food contains if someone has allergies. Lying to a customer is not OK. And sure, this 'doesn't matter' until the day someone destroys their equipment trying to get the 'stuck feedback' out.

Yesterday morning I woke up to a text from my sister asking where in Austin I lived. I told her, asked Why.

Hours later, my dad called (about something unrelated) and as I hadn't heard back from her yet... I asked if he knew why she was asking.

Turns out she'd talked to our mother the day before and she's planning a trip to Austin with her best friend and had asked our mother if I would host them.

      Like, wtf child.
Why the everloving shit would you ask our mother if I'd host you and not ask me?
You think our mother can dictate that? I am now LESS LIKELY to say yes.

To our mother's credit, she did tell my sister to ask me.
To our mother discredit, she told my sister I'd do it if they offered to pay for food.

I'm leaning towards being willing to do so because while my sister and I had a terrible relationship through her tweens and early teens (holy shit she took bratty teen to a new level and even when I'd try to do big sister stuff like take her shopping, to get her nails done, etc., she'd just be catty and mean to me)... we've had a few text convos over the past year that have been OK.

      But man.
I'm peeved she'd ask our mom instead of just being adults and asking me directly.

      woosah

just gotta remember she's not yet 21 and still p much a child.

      I climb onto counters.

My 6'3" ex-husband would fuss over how dangerous it was until I'd remind him that he'd always complain about people asking him to get things / flat out refuse.

... I really just need to invest in a step stool.

This is me, unless it's something not too heavy I can nudge to the front edge of a shelf or whatever with - IDK, tongs, a wooden spoon, whatever is long that's handy. If something's on the top shelf, I forget it even exists, period. Meanwhile, my six and a half foot tall husband just snrks at me.

the big tongs are absolutely 'for grabbing things'

Wtf is it with adults wanting anyone to save their ass from their own shit?

I feel like that goes both ways.

My parents never did anything with me as a kid that wasn't part of their interests. No involvement in any activities. 'Kid shit sucks so I'm gonna avoid it'
= My parents made it pretty obvious they did not support me one bit.

Its clear the story is 100 percent true, Gritty is such a wuss that with a running start and a punch to the back of the head, he can't take out a 13-year-old boy even. In fact, even when hit in the head, he can't leave a mark and somehow it magically went to his back.

Tfw you fail at your depression meal and your food gets even lamer, lol.

This happens to me so often because the depression and ADHD clash. I have a bad tendency to forget a single item at the grocery store. It's how I learned to make alfredo sauce, from scratch, on the fly. Sans recipe. In that 'uhhhhh I think if I do this and this and th- oh hey it worked.'

But other times (particularly when depressed) it's just been....... I guess I'll just do this instead (womp womp).
