Migraine got so bad yesterday I missed the 2nd half of my workday and slept for 5 hours.

Spent maybe 4 hours awake after that to eat and try to do some school assignments. Went to bed early (about 3 hours earlier than usual) and slept a good 10 hours.

Still have the migraine. Not as bad as what stopped me from working, but still no good.

So glad I see the neurologist on Monday, y'all.

I'm almost afraid to ask of their stance on trans women

If you read the article, they explicitly state 'If you identify as female'
Also, the friend who pointed this out to me (who works with Green Ronin) is very pro-LGBT and wouldn't be so supportive/gung-ho of the project if they weren't willing to gladly accept trans-women.

    • Client-Side Spacing

I am on a game which has no posebreak and sadly, attempts to talk staff into adding one have failed. In a 1-on-1 scene, I can use %r to provide some pose spacing, but that doesn't work when there's multiple people in the scene.

I've heard before of people configuring something on themselves (soft code) or on their client. Is there a way to do this that won't affect, say, pages and channels? I'm using Atlantis and the game itself is on TinyMUSH.

I will say that while there will be similar themes to the books, I'm not following their plotline. It'd be difficult to, anyway.

But as someone who has read the books... the show does deviate, quite a bit, story-wise. Mechanics-wise, however, I feel they complement one another.

I am OK with spoilers in the thread and can always edit the original post as a warning if people feel it may be necessary.

Sure it does. The goal is for your team to take more squares than the opposing team, and it would be better strategy to snatch away any squares that you thought were in their wheelhouse, while leaving to the last those that you felt pretty sure they'd have a tough time taking anyway.

I was wrapped up in the way players of The Game might say avoid an athletic competition with someone who is an obvious athlete, going to something that both the candidates aren't good at (the ultimate version of this being one hand Dragon poker), but you are right. I wonder if the scoring is more than binary, meaning if you do a bad job of solving a square, its not as good as a masterful solution. That would change the value of going after squares that your opposition is stronger at.

So I read the books a few years ago (I will probably re-read as part of this project; right now I'm enjoying the show), but I feel like that was implied in the vague details given about Welters. That how you solve a square is as important as claiming it.

It would also explain why (in the show), performing well at Welters for possible mentors was so important.

Sexism aside, different sexes have different brain chemical shit going on.

And that provides a difference of perspective. I see nothing wrong with wanting to hire a man or a woman specifically.

And the article does state they intend to do something along similar lines for male writers later this year.

A good way to add the thematic risk of magic is to allow 'pushing past your boundaries', ie, trying to cast magic that you're only so-so familiar with. But at higher difficulties (or perhaps adding power to your spell), and where if you fail you've accepted the consequence by trying. This gets around the really terrible mechanic of random dice destroying your character when she's trying to light a candle, while still allowing a sense of danger and risk if you really want to go the extra mile.

I will likely do something along these lines (great way of looking at it), using FS3's 'embarrassing failure' result level as sort of a botched roll.

I have some thoughts on how magic will be handled/structured, along with circumstances (will require a fairly robust weather cost, lezbehonest).

But I also need time to flesh it out.

@Zz - I entirely intend to make it a sort of comfort level. As I stand now, Staff-run stuff won't veer there. PRPs can, but if it fits into <X categories, including those mentions>, players must basically sign off on something saying they're OK with it.

That way it's fully opt-in for things that go there as it were, but there'll still be plenty that doesn't.

I do not want to set off a political war, so please no? Just appreciate that a company is specifically seeking to bring women to its writing staff.

Anyhow... Green Ronin is going to be, in a couple weeks, setting off a talent search for a female writer to work on Lost Citadel.

@faraday Oh, you've helped me with custom code. Not written it for me, but answered questions so I could cope with it.

And you win, 'cause I am a sucky coder at best, and run a game. Not the greatest game ever or anything, but I think it's been a success.

@Auspice Ares looks soooooo like MOO to me. We started out in the same place.

Also, I totally want to play a non-wizard special. They do have some as staff at Brakebills in the source...

I count Staff in the pool of wizard types, I guess. 😄 I'll totally be allowing people to app Staff at Brakebills, yes.

      @dontpanda

It'll be up to her, in the end. Right now it's a place holder, but it's detailed out that if an assignment is late, we can fix it, but the instructor can count each day late from the original submission.

I think the intent is that they'll start checking things the day after the assignment is due, but the truth I've encountered this far into my degree (300-level classes) is that they usually take a week+ on grading finals.

I will appeal this one. I've never appealed anything before (even the time I was given a D on a writing assignment for the singular reason of 'I didn't really enjoy the story, but it's grammatically correct and meets all the requirements'), but this one is immensely frustrating.

So far, Squarespace is denying it was anything on their end. I've changed my password, but a) I doubt someone would get their way into an account on Squarespace and just password each page, b) I used LastPass to generate the (16 character letter/number/special) password, so that speaks to Squarespace likely having some security issues.

    • RE: How do you keep OOC lounges from becoming trash?

I like having an OOC area to go to because sometimes I am not up to actively RPing or I am preparing for a scene, etc. I don't always engage in conversation in said area, so I'd be fine if it was just a Quiet Room.

However, I feel the concept of 'get rid of all OOC rooms because people need to be RPIng not hanging out!' is dangerous. I have been on games that have taken the 'It's a place to RP, not hang out' too far in that they expected if you were online, you were actively RPing, period. As in Staff would begin paging you and hassling you if you were alone in a room on grid. (I bailed super quick the last time that happened. It was a new 'policy' on said game.)

But, in my jaded opinion, I think if your reason to get rid of OOC Lounges to eliminate the problematic element (like people who give play-by-play of RL or who are being dicks to people), you're not going to do anything but drive them elsewhere. Maybe to Public channel, which is fine, but they may end up doing the same on Sphere channels... which is less so (as those are often used to locate RP).

All in all, those problematic off-putting people are still going to be there and you (as in Staffly 'you') are still going to have to talk to them.

    • RE: RL Anger

My last class, our big final project (35% of grade) was to build a website. I had to use a Squarespace trial because two weeks to build a website meant I wasn't gonna do it from scratch and I also didn't have the money for anything else.

At some point, in the last week, between submitting the site/final and my instructor going to finally grade it (final was due the 26th, instructor 'graded' yesterday, the 2nd)... Squarespace had something bug out that put a password on every page on the site.

So my instructor gave me an F and asked me to fix it. But per school standards, if she wants, she could count every day since the 26th as a 'late' day, which would make my final grade a 0 anyway. And if you've been following... F on a grade that's 35% of the total means failing the class.

I keep trying to be angry, but all I want to do is cry.

      @Arkandel said in Magicians Game:

@Auspice Are you planning to support playable non-wizard specials? There were lots of really weird shit out there.

Not out of the gate, likely.

The game will initially be at Brakebills and, until the first arch plot (to open the way to the Neitherlands) is done... the only place the RP will be.

After that, I'll likely see where characters go and what they do. Do they end up focusing on Fillory? Start crafting their own worlds to access via fountain? If there ends up being a lot of interest in Fillory, I'll probably start allowing Fillorian PCs.

(Also, in case anyone asks, re: Children of Earth ruling Fillory... That will likely be NPCs; probably ones already there.)

I feel dividing playerbases too early can hurt a game long run. And for a game that may be small (tho it does seem to have a lot of positive interest, based on this thread!), I think keeping things focused and accessible RP for all at the beginning can be important.

I still intend to have a high risk level. Not 'your character might die at any moment' risk, but 'If you are ICly fucking around and Staff finds out, you may end up with consequences.' Might not be immediate (as it should in some cases), but maybe they catch the attention of something nasty that starts hunting them down.

I'm all about supporting peoples' fun, but I am also a supporter of ICA=ICC. People who want to be able to do whatever they want and violate whatever laws of physics and magic they want and always have happy fun sparkly times where nothing bad ever happens probably shouldn't play on a game I run.

@il-volpe & @faraday - TBH, since Ares uses Ruby, I might have an easier time. My best MU* coding was done in MOO, which is object-oriented programming. Part of my issue in MUSH is the way the code is written tends to confuse and frustrate me. I'm already (very slowly because work/school) working on learning Python. Adding Ruby was already a plan, long-term.

Well, if you're already requiring justification for spends, you can do it by hand. If it's not a huge game it'd be tolerable and less time-consuming than reading logs, likely.

That's the plan at this point in time, yes. Most non-nWoD games don't end up very big at all, so it shouldn't be too big a hassle.

      @Auspice

If you have a clever codebeast, perhaps:

You have a set of things you are 'Learning.' In theory most of these correspond to classes you are taking, but you can have a few more than that. You can only spend XP on shit you have been learning for x number of days.

The amount of XP you earn in a semester is the amount it takes to advance enough to get As in a full load of classes.

It's setting what's in your learning list that requires a justification, not spending XP.

That sort of thing would be quite awesome, but as I have no coder at this time and will very likely be waiting for AresMUSH (I can modify and understand existing code, but my attempts to write new code tend to come out a horrendous mess)... I need to aim simple for now.

Well, considering I intend to make logs required for increasing stats/skills pertaining to magic, I do hope this will occur. I feel that RPing the experience of learning (and fucking up) magic should be a feature of the game.

      New question:

      Welters.
The books are vague on its rules and the show even moreso.

Has anyone seen any writeups out there on fan-developed rules that could be altered for a MU*? Because I see Welters being a potential for ongoing, group RP that requires little oversight/planning.
