I'm just kind of irked because a) this sort of griping is always more slanted towards women (Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, etc), b) billie eilish is crazy talented for her age and she has been making some powerful statements, such as how the way she dresses is specifically because she doesn't want to be sexualized in any way.

      Guess what.
A woman won, BIG, in music without using her body in any way. Like, women probably have done that before, but now no one can say she did. They can't say 'oh she dressed this way in that video.' Or 'she wore that thing at that award show.' Or 'this guy probably thought she was hot that one time.' That is a huge win for women everywhere.

Between her and Lizzo (who, on the OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN, is showing that bigger women can fucking rock it in whatever outfits they want and don't need to cover everything up), women made a huge statement in music this past year.

The other day I did an hour of Just Dance. It was great. I felt great after.
The following day I could only manage 20 minutes.
The next day I couldn't make myself do it at all and just felt exhausted. Sluggish. Full fibro flare had come up..
      Yesterday I slept until 2pm.
Today walking to/from the bus is torture.

I hate this. I hate how even finding a method of working out I like.....and my body is rejecting it. I hate how I WANT to get in shape.... I mean an hour may have been the issue and once I recover I should prob do less but I was having fun! I should be able to have fun and enjoy myself and not pay for it for days on end.

Extremely petty gripe of the day: waking up to hear that Billie Ellish won a bunch of Grammys. It's cool that the award is being given out to people who don't sing, but do spoken word on their albums. Feel like Henry Rollins should've won a boatload in that case.

She's 18 years old and does most of her own songwriting, has directed at least one music video.....

      Shh

Go listen to 'everything I wanted'.

I don't know who decided that work should start in the mornings, but that person is shit and I hate them.

I could legit come in to work at 11 AM or so, but I hate hate hate hate hate being at work in the afternoon. Anything past 3PM is just horrible.

      So.

      Same.
I did sleep until 7 vs 6 this morning, but.

Ugggggh. The stitching group has been wanting to do a roadtrip to this amaaaaaaaazing cross-stitch store (https://nedlewerkes.com/ - I've only seen photos but omg) and the weekend they've chosen .... there's like, 5 of us who are going to WitchFest and I'm kinda salty about it because it's like.... you're discounting my vote because it's a Facebook poll and it'd put it at a tie between the 7th and the 21st.

It's for mourning the dead...except for when it isn't? This is the same forum where, in similar threads, people have posted 'X has died' and it's been followed by a host of "I'm glad he's dead!" posts. I honestly don't care either way but the hypocrisy found in this forum is often hilarious.

There is a point here, folks. Why is this objection not OK and others have been?

tbh, I haven't been cool with it the other times, either, but the other times have been for political deaths (IIRC) and uhhhh...

Frankly, I felt if I'd said 'hey, this feels uncomfortable' over, say, people cheering on a Republican's death, people would've labeled me a white supremacist.

@Arkandel So you can ooze your admiration for the guy all over the place unrebuffed in the thread, but I can't chafe at that and rebut? Got it.

A man (and his daughter) died. Some of us are really taken back by it. It's in poor taste (IMO) to sneer about it in a place where people are trying to come to terms with it.

If you wanna speak poorly about him, go do it in RL Anger or the politics board; no one will stop you there. But this thread is for mourning the dead.

@Auspice Cloaks are pretty straightforward. Is there someone in the crafting group where you are you could maybe work out a trade with? If you pick up the fabric, and they make the cloak, maybe you make something for them with their materials? Some things would be a huge ask, but a basic cloak is definitely something within the realm of 'reasonable request to put out feelers for a trade' about, unless you have something super fancy or elaborate in mind. (Even some of the things that look super fancy and elaborate aren't a huge complicated investment of effort, fwiw.)

I asked! There's someone that might be able to, but I am also about to be 'past the point of broke' unless I find a new job. I'm only going to WitchFest because it's only $5 a ticket and I got my ticket a month ago.

I really really really wish I could sew.

I want a cloak for the Austin Witch Fest.
      I want a couple haramakis.

.... probably more stuff but those are top of the list.

But sewing machines and I have a History. I'm cursed.

Yours must do things differently than the ones here in Austin. If they don't have the item, they just cancel it off your order and refund it. Which was fun during Steotch when we realized our group of 14 was trying to fill out the 60-odd floss list, another group was trying to, and people who were unaffiliated.

For a couple weeks in August if you walked into any Joanns or Michael's in Austin, the floss section looked like a wasteland.

@surreality I probably shouldn't tell you then that they do 40% off your entire order online every so often then.

They don't like those for the in-store, but they do allow it for in-store pickup.

This is how I fleshed out my DMC so well over the past month.

      Huge order of floss.
      $12.
      etx

I think a lot of people ignore the online since they won't ship stuff like floss, beads, etc. But since you can do the in store pickup for those........

The 40% off your order is my friend.

ETA: wow I jacked up..that first sentence. This is why I should wake up more before posting.

    • RE: The Crafting Thread

So after Steotch, the girl that led our Lady Geeks of Austin team (we placed 3rd worldwide btw!) decided to start 'Austitch' because she kept meeting people who lived in Austin, were doing Steotch, but weren't part of LGA. Either because they weren't nerdy, had been kicked out of LGA (I vaguely referenced this one and it wasn't because the girl herself was the issue), or because they were guys!

So she decided to specifically make a needlearts club. And already, a month in, there's something like 50 members and we've had one meetup with around 20 people show. Ages range from 18-70-something and we've even got... 3? guys who are members. And it's the latter that really pleases me. I do get safe-spaces (which is what LGA is for women who are nerdy), BUT... these hobbies that are female-centric can be very awkward for guys to enjoy because on top of men mocking them for it, sometimes women make them feel weird, too. I've seen it over the years with knitting. When I was active in the nail polish subreddits, it definitely happened there and a number of us fought hard to make it a welcome space for the men (esp. teenage boys!) who were into nail polish. I mean, c'mon, if we wanna break gender norms we can't go 'no this hobby isn't for you.'

So, it tickles me to see these guys who are totally OK sitting around with a group of women, stitching away.

And in that month? It's become a really close-knit (ha) sort of group, too. We've had a member lose her dog (some of us who knew her before the group formed knew it was coming; the pup was v. old and had some major health issues), someone get in a car wreck, etc., and the Discord is in turns supportive, full of memes, etc.

It's my happy crafting place and as I've been struggling with being just days away from contract end and unemployment, it is my sanity. Srsly, if any of you Austin folks here on MSB do needleart stuff (embroidery, cross-stitch, sashiko... she hasn't embraced knitting/crochet as a part of it yet but by god I'll wear her down) and wanna join, feel free to PM me.

      Okay.
      False alarm.
      Maybe.

One of the girls I hang out with regularly showed up so if nothing else we can eat and drink and hang out.

Plus the hibiscus cider I got is super tasty.

3 min past when my ultimate werewolf event was supposed to start and no one is here.
One person said she'd be running late. Two people confirmed earlier today but aren't here.
Earlier this week there was about a dozen people who were all confirmed.

I'm starting to feel super embarrassed for even thinking of doing this.
