O snap, I thought this was going to be easy...
I say MU* Plot! No way tv executives would have a First Nation woman as a protagonist...

So I'm looking for more books to read. I'm really into psychological thriller books and I'm fascinated with unreliable narrators or when the narrator/protagonist exhibits sociopathic/psychotic tendencies.
Some examples:
'The Shooter Inside Me' (Jim Thompson)
'Gone Girl' and 'Sharp Objects' (Gillian Flynn)
'Grotesque' and 'Out' (Natsuo Kirino).
I read The Girl On The Train and it didn't appeal to me as much. it was nice, decently written but it felt lacking somehow.
@Olsson said in RL things I love:
I've finally managed to set up a proper corner in my home to paint where I can also have my laptop present and used. So now I can watch shows, MU* whatever while painting.
My productivity levels are way higher suddently, on both fronts.
I am envious of that set up. Would love something like that. Do you scene while you paint? Is that distracting considering you may have to switch modes so often?
@Miss-Demeanor I finished season 2 actually! I've been waiting for a few more episodes of season 3 to air so I can binge watch as much as I can all at once.
I'm way too excited about it Like more than Game of Thrones.
Please tell me this season lives up to expectation...!
More TV recommendation. If you like some campyness and tired of how the Walking Dead is OMG SO SERIOUS check out Z Nation.
Love the show. It's boring the first 3 episodes, but then it picks up and it just becomes fantastic. The main guy is worth it and I love their take on zombies. Just...watch it. Now.
In all honesty your Changeling ideas sound like nWoD Changeling, where it did get darker and less pretty tea-parties and where everyone is basically a PTSD victim who are in mortal fear of going back. Why decide on oWoD instead of nWoD?
Keep in mind I am biased. I love nWoD but loathe oWoD.
I'm not quite sure I understand why it's so difficult to set some random rules for staff that allows them to have fun without ruining it for everyone.
If in a multi-sphere MU*, they can't have a PC in their own sphere. If they have a PC, it can't be higher than second in command of the other sphere. If they want to run a plot centered around their character, it can only be one arc/plot per whatever (so maybe every 5th/10th/nth plot run, staffers can run a plot for other staffers' PC.) Staff duties should never be done on PC-bit, and PC-shit should never be taken to Staffbit.
I always believed transparency is the key to keeping people happy. Have the plots recorded and maybe starred to show which ones are 'plots' or stories ran specifically for the Staffer's PC so people can keep them accountable. Keep detailed logs of meetings or even problem situations with players. Meetings should be posted on the website (unless discussing plots for players) and problem player logs should be saved and used when/if accused of misbehavior.
Staffers do deserve fun,. but they are also in the position of power on a game, and no matter what they will be held to a higher standard than normal PCs, that is what being in a position of power entails (with great power comes great responsibilities.)
On single sphere MUSHes, they should never app someone in power unless its second in command or it is an NPC, and NPCs should be stated clearly on the character (+Finger and Website). All NPC rp should be logged and displayed. The reason I allow for second in command is because a lot of players are flakes, Staffers tend to be less flakes - so if the guy in command is indisposed the game doesn't have to stop. Second in command can give temporary orders for a week at most but their main job would be to find a replacement for that position of power (if they want to be second in command I mean, this is just the highest they can go - not that they HAVE to do this!)
These are just some ideas I've been brewing up. I don't think its bad to set strict guidelines and numbers to enforce rules. I also believe Players should police staff as much as staff police players.
All these rules can be dismissed in a sandbox - for those games do whatever the hell you want.
Nah, it can definitely be done I think. However, it works better for eras where there is a lot of visual/written information (movies, shows, books, cartoons, comics, whichever.) And with a culture that people are partially aware of without needing to research much. It also helps to have clear ideas of how every day life was lived back then.
Like I can imagine Ancient Rome would be simple; point to a few sources (Rome, Spartacus (movies and TV series), The Gladiator, Centurion, Marcus Didius Falcus Mysteries, etc.) tell them roughly who the big players are and voila, you're pretty good to go. Maybe the only thing you need is a guideline for the cast system and how house holds of various wealth are run, various careers and how status works.
If you listen to most of the post, the argument isn't with the fact that it's a history MU*, its with the which era you've picked. Its a contentious era, not very well known except for real history buffs who like Spanish or Moor history, during a time not many are interested in (although to Middle Easterners we love this era due to it being the big expansion of Islam and Arab culture.)
@WTFE Holy shit, so I collect unusual lighters, where did you find this?! I want it!

Harping again on my favourite hobby horse: how, precisely, with details, do you plan to reward those who play other lines of conflict than the religious ones? Talks of banning X and forbidding Y are counter-productive. Punishment is a terrible motivator. What do you plan to do to reward those who keep to the theme you want to establish? Show your work.
Aside from XP ,,, the ones making the effort to play the game, the ones politicking, the ones making alliances, the ones conflicting over the resources will make gains by affecting the direction of the story and meta. They will shape the story of the mush itself. They will contribute to its growth and direction.
You really, really, really, really, really need to read my little rant on this topic. What you are proposing as "rewards" is setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. Motivational psychology: not just a pair of polysyllabic words.
Not sure if its just me but it says 'access denied' when I try to click on your link.
So far only the pilot is out, but check out Insecure; surprisingly funny and the her rapping is actually surprisingly good.
Ooh nice, it does seem nifty. Thanks for the heads up too!
Alright, fair enough, I just thought most games would have the same political intrigue if done right. I was thinking less War of the Roses, and more Italian Renaissance with the whole Borgias, Medici, Catholicism, etc. Where even the Pope openly has a kid despite the celibacy rule (I think established in 1130s or something.)
But yea, if it fascinates you go for it! You seem to have a firm grasp of what you want to do and I have faith that you can go through with it.
Okay, I admit after reading all your rules about how to handle it (quick bans, specific channels, enforcing OOC behavior beyond the typical 'no harassment') why specifically do you want this time in history? Current time is heavily charged with the same debate your characters may be having IC, which allows for a lot of easy OOC/IC mixing.
So is there a specific reason you picked this era or is it just your own interest of this time?
Admittedly, I probably won't join the game since I can just imagine the shit fest that can explode. Now I am not saying no one can handle this, I am just saying that you will only need one or two people to set others off.
Eh, it doesn't matter what I say, you do what you want to have fun. If it doesn't work out, no harm no foul, right? Its just a game. Have fun and I wish you the best of luck!
@Ganymede said in Zombie/Apocalypse Survival Game?:
The Descent is based on an post-Apoc Earth using GMC/nWoD 2.0 rules and races.
Hmm, checked it out, I don't know much about nWoD vampires and werewolves; I'd rather have something not so WoD focused admittedly.
But the suggestion is awesome, and I will check it out since apping a mortal/+ shouldn't be too difficult, especially with no Masquerade to uphold.
ETA:
Aaaand its empty. Drat.
@WTFE Okay those are freaking adorable. I just...argh! Too cute.
I don't know but I am interested too. I love post-apocalyptic settings - less high tech, more pure survival and a bunch of mismatched people with differing priorities trying to get along.
This may be an unpopular opinion; but if you want a historical MU* focused on a more romanticized depiction of history then how about doing something in the vein of Assassin's Creed? They take 'idealist fantasy history' to a whole new level. Only problem is needing to deal with the whole 'genetic memory' storyline - which I guess is easy since there is no machine to access these memories, just ancient factions warring against each other.
I feel like without a solid thing to point at and go 'this is how we're doing it' it's going to be harder to have a uniform agreement on what is allowed and what isn't, or which point is considered 'breaking point' when it comes to suspension of disbelief.
I actually really like this idea. I can see it working well. Only problem is social rolls. If someone doesn't like you OOC but ICly they are meant to be charmed by your character or vice versa, I am worried the -/+ will be skewed based on OOC feelings.
I do love the idea of having 'antagonists' built into the game. Would be fun to start a game with built in conflict aimed directly at certain characters.
When you said meta-shadowrun game for some reason I thought it was basically a Shadowrun game where they are aware that they are characters or at least the absurdity of their existence.
