At the risk of sounding like an old fogey gen-xer: there once was a time when you'd page someone(or they'd page you)and say "Hey! Wanna do a scene?"

They or you would agree or not, the person already there would set the scene and you'd go from there or find someone else to do a scene with.

Things were so much easier then.

I've been meaning to do this for a while. Not really playing anywhere at the moment, but Arx is looking like my go-to Mu* when I get back into it. Mainly an RPI player, but always played Mushes too.

      Shadowrun: Siena, Maria
      Shadowrun: Detroit- Jocasta, Natty, Sukanya
      Shadowrun: Denver- Sabra

      Evolution of Esos: Tamsyn, Valeska
Armageddon: Juvanna, Pai Ming, Zuania (back to Mudding: Mayreni)

    • RE: Game Death

From what I've seen two things can kill a game: stagnation and changing too quick. Before I get into that I will say I'm a big fan of games where the story ends. I'd like a game where the game has a metaplot that has some sort of endgame from the beginning, whether it's "seasons" or a different phase, I'm a big fan of games like that.

Changing too fast: There was a DnD game called Treyvan. It was fairly successful, had a good number of players, active plots, etc. Then one day staff announced they were changing the theme, nobody could keep their characters. Basically, it was a different game. Treyvan died.

It changed too fast and players weren't ready for it.

Stagnation: Wanna know what will make me log out and never return? A stagnant game. If I log in, a game has a good number of players, healthy ooc chatter, but an empty grid or I find myself paging people to rp and everybody is like "nah I'm good" goes back to idling. I'm out!

Games can get stuck in a rut if they've been running for a while. The Mu I'm playing right now has been around for 20 years. I've seen people say it's dying or its stagnant. In a lot of ways it is, but they're changing it just enough where they're maintaining a playerbase. Story wise it's pretty much the same game though. The difference is there is a large number of stories you can tell in the setting.

I think someone said listening to players is useful in knowing what should be added or subtracted from a game. But I'd take it a step further and look for feedback from newer players since that's what you want, newer players coming in and adding their stories. What's keeping them? What's scaring them off? What can be done to keep that balance of keeping players and adding new ones?

    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

Let me just say as a player of both rpi MUDs and mushes, both communities are equally dismissive of each other. There really might not be a common ground between the two. From what I've seen in this thread, certain points were brought up and weren't really addressed and hostility, passive or naked emerged.

It makes me wonder, why continue to post or update a thread where you're greeted with such opposition? I don't think being all "come at me bro" is going to be that conducive either. This is a derivative of the Snark/Wora board, but I think the questions and points brought up in the beginning were very genuine and were ignored...which brought on the reaction you have now.

So I'm also wondering, if you don't want to discuss what you're advertising and seeing how well it's going, why do it?

      @admiral

We get what you’re saying. The thing is it sounds like grandpa saying “ back in my day...” completely ignoring the fact hip hop still does have a message. He paid lip service to Kendrick Lamar, but Kendrick Lamar’s album sold really well “I got royalty and loyalty inside my dna.”
At this point music is two to three generations removed from him. It went from an underground art form to a mainstream genre. The consequence is that it is what it is today. Instead of taking young artists under his wing, he’s alienating them by talking shit about them.
While he was talking about what he was rapping about, he ignored the fact that Ice-T and Too Short were rapping about pimpin and disrespecting women at the same time.

It still has a message, he’s just not seeing it.

Right! I love Cardi B, Migos, etc. There’s nothing wrong with that kind of music. Sometimes you feel like listening to something ratchet.

My concern is that that’s all they play on the radio. But radio is crappy any station you turn to these days. Thank god for Spotify. My concern is also that there is a generational thing happening here where that older generation “Run DMC” is becoming crotchety and alienating the youth by saying “What are you doing to my music!?” When there is good hip hop being made still.

      That’s not good either.

    • RE: What the fuck happened to Hip-Hop?

The beauty of hip hop back then was it was diverse. You could have N.W.A., A Tribe Called Quest, you name it. Now it just doesn’t happen like that.

So while he was saying what happened to the message, he casually mentioned there’s Kendrick Lamar.

What he should’ve been talking about how the diversity is still there. It’s just that certain types of hip hop are the mainstream.

      Caldo Verde- Portuguese Green soup

Take a green (collard or kale) wash, cut the thick stem off, slice into ribbons. Set aside.

Cut chorizo or linguica sausage into slices. Set aside.

Take a few potatoes, cut them into cubes.

In your pot, sautée your potatoes with garlic (as much garlic as possible!) and olive oil, then add your sausage. Onion is optional for sautéing.

Pour in your chicken stock, lower your heat so that your potatoes can get nice and soft. When your potatoes are just about done, add your greens and let those cook for about 15 minutes.

Now it’s ready! Feel it in your soul....

    • RE: Armageddon MUD

      @d-bone said in Armageddon MUD:

A benign question asked oocly- even if your character icly might have knowledge of such- that is illegal could be something as simple as:Hey is it a good idea to go outside the west gate and hunt there or is the east gate safer? Some games go find out ic, Arma has a much harder stance on that shit, not only do you not get the answer, you should be 'reminded' not to ask questions like that.

Oh, no, it was for you. And here's why: In your example you want to go about it ooc, because you feel your character would know which one is safer. So even if you asked which was was safer, at best you would get a response like: Neither way is safer.

So your example is kind of vague. I'm not even sure what kind of answer you're looking for.

So I'm assuming you wouldn't want them to show you what's safe for you to hunt, which is what is likely to happen. So let's throw that out.

Maybe you mean, "I want directions to a safe hunting ground." Nobody is going to give you a "Go N,E,S,S,N,N" it's not that kind of game. Not going to happen. Not going to get into you not being punished for it either, you just won't get the answer you're looking for.

The reason nobody is going to tell you definitively "GO EAST!" is because if you go in one direction you're going to find spiders, if you go in the other you're going to find mekillots. Both are creatures that would give veteran hunters pause.

What you can do is stay in character is say, "My father always said the best hunting is out the east gate, what you think Joebob?" And Joe bob would probably reply, "Your father must've liked running from mekillots."

    • RE: Armageddon MUD

I came here to advertise the game as per the rules. It really turned into “yes it is! No it’s not!” On a level that I haven’t seen since grade 8. It’s really gone into game philosophy, grammar, Tomb Raider and took all kinds of turns it really shouldn’t have and should’ve been stopped a long time ago.

@evilcabbage whats happening is there are people really waiting for one of us to say “Our game is better than yours” because a while back Jeshin came in here and had that kind of attitude and made a whole thing about Muds vs. Mushes. I think it left a bad taste in people’s mouths. So they’re just waiting for something like that.

So, here’s what I’m proposing: Let’s hit the reset button.

Keep in mind there are people that feel strongly about the game. Both ways. There is a board where people would love to see the game shut down and buried for good. There are also players that would love to share the same game with as many people as possible and hope you would enjoy it too. Those are two very extreme points of view. So @ShaLeah is right, it is that kind of game.

Armageddon is a game where you’re in character as much as possible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t break character or say “I made a mistake...do over.” It’s not a game that would appeal to everybody that posts here. But there is no game like that. It is very much a game that recognizes its flaws and it tries to make them right. Just like in a mush, I’m sure staff has had serious discussions about ways to take down some of those barriers to entry.

It’s a game where the world is unfair and characters are flawed. I felt like this forum was mature enough to look at the initial ad and say “it’s not for me” and move on to talk about VASpider or whatever the hot topic of the week is. In the very least I thought I wouldn’t have to say “...then this game isn’t for you.” I was wrong.

If you can’t deal with a minimal amount of ooc chatter...then this game is not for you.

If you can’t deal with the possibility of your character meeting an abrupt end....then this game is not for you.

If you don’t read documentation...this game is not for you.

If you want to do everything alone and figure things out on your own...you’re going to die a lot. If you don’t like that.....this game is not for you.

If you want to play a Mary Sue that knows how to do everything or eventually learn everything....this game is not for you.

If you don’t want your character to die....this game isn’t for you.

If you are not alright with your character being treated poorly, for their race, accent or class..this game isn’t for you.

If you’re the type of player that needs to know all of the things...right now, when the question comes to you...this game isn’t for you.

If the game isn’t for you, then no hard feelings and good luck wherever you end up. I didn’t come here to debate the pros and cons of a system where ooc is kept at a minimum. I didn’t come here to say one way is better than another. If you played it, didn’t like it. I hope you find or found what you’re looking for.

If you’re still interested after the debacle this has turned into, feel free to visit the site or ask me basic questions. I’ll be here forever, because I mush too.

    • RE: Armageddon MUD

      @kanye-qwest

See...what I’m trying to get across is there are different examples being bounced around with very different possible outcomes.

What you quoted he’s saying you get punished for being in the wrong place. Yes, you can. The documents state there are places your character is absolutely not welcomed. That is not punishing a newbie, that’s punishing anyone that goes somewhere where they don’t belong. Ok, you didn’t read the documents. The room descriptions do a pretty good job of telling you “You shouldn’t be here.” So let’s say you didn’t notice the room descriptions either. You come across players that rob you (he said he’s ok with that kind of roleplay)That still isn’t punishing a new player, it’s a consequence any player would face for doing the same thing.

Now moving on to the next scenario. Your character can’t read. Same thing here asyou didn’t read any of the documentation, you don’t know your character can’t read. You’re humming along and you say “I was reading the message board over there and it says...” The record skips, players are going crazy...you didn’t know. When you say ooc “Geez guys...I didn’t know my character is illiterate.” Other players would understand that and play around it.

Now if you don’t say anything ooc. The other players have no idea you’re a new player. The signs are there, but you didn’t break character. Players might say something ooc, they might choose to keep it in character and warn you. Either one of those are likely to happen. That still isn’t punishing a new player for making a mistake. How would they know you felt uncomfortable by making a mistake in this case. Some people just roll with it.

These are unlikely scenarios by the way. Let’s play them out anyway.

Ok, last one. You did all of the above. You got corrected ic or ooc, players have moved on and then you say “gonna write this letter. Where do I buy scrolls?” Your newbie armor is now gone. Personally, at that point I would be thinking you’re ignoring the game world, not that you’re new.

When I point out there is a forum and a discord. I’m pointing out that the game is not all that opaque. Not that you should jump on chat in the middle of a scene.
Hopefully if you’ve applied for a character, you’ve taken some time to read the documentation. But if you haven’t, you said it yourself people don’t like to read. Then that’s another issue, but it’s not “Armageddon punishes new players.”
