    • Are there any high fantasy MU*s?

Are there any active high fantasy MU*s? Nothing D&D, but more like just an interesting setting where one can play wizards, knights, etc.

If not, I might build one. I've been inspired by playing MTG a bunch lately.

Anyone wanna do something like this? I'm starting to get tired of nWoD/COD, so I wanna go do some Scion-y shenanigans. I could open up a small server or maybe open up an AresMUSH that uses Scion2E and just have people post their sheets.

      If anyone's interested lemme know.

      I'm a POC IRL.

There are a lot of white people who can sympathize with POCs, but most cannot empathize with POCs.

Please stay in your lane and don't try to play a POC just b/c. If you don't know the life experiences of what it's like to be a POC, then just play an interesting white person. No one will begrudge you for it.

    • 2E Mage-focused Game

      Hi all,

I scrapped my earlier idea for the Golden Road (the one with numerous stories). I decided to tell ONE COHESIVE story with numerous elements from the other to where it could become a cohesive MU*. Right now, I want to do a 2E Mage-focused game that has a staff-run metaplot (me), but will eventually open up other spheres, not as main characters with staff stories, but as potential other PCs for others to interact with what's going on in the world. As such, I've put in a timeline and the current setting mood. I'd love for all y'alls thoughts.

I'm getting help with deugging, but could use someone to help with the wiki so all the world building can be put in a pretty form. DM me if intrigued. Thanks!

      Prologue:

1900 - Founding of the Havrion Academy of Magical Pedagogy, an institute in established in as part of the Smithsonian Institutes in Washington, D.C in order to develop the best and brightest minds to lead the future of the Pentacle by El-Melloi Havrion, a Mysterium master
1910 - The first graduating class of the academy finishes, with fifteen of the forty three students passing finals exams and being considered at least of adept level in the Pentacle; many move on to serve in esteemed positions and as researchers worldwide
1964 - The Havrion Academy shifts from being a Mysterium led research institute into a multi-disciplinary college chantry to train the next generation. The first faculty from the Adamantine Arrows, Silver Ladder, and the Guardians of the Veil are introduced
1983 - The Free Council is welcomed to teach its techne’ and apprentices are soon brought in, thus representing the entire Diamond order.
1986 - Wanting to prevent potential magical disaster upon others, the combined faculty of the Havrion Academy move all leylines associated with the school from its original spot as part of the Smithsonian Institutes to a powerful node found in the town of Cayuga Falls, New York
1999 - Professors Genevieve Caldeur and Lin Tsinghua foresee a time of danger in the future, a time of increased spiritual wounds, abyssal intrusions, and other calamities. Their prophecies are recorded in the Great Record of the Academy
2000 - The first magical deadzone appears in San Diego, California. Magical treasures, wonders, and familiars at the San Diego consilium were completely wiped out. This repeats numerous times in San Francisco (along with a powerful 7.1 earthquake), Boston, Tokyo, Prague, and London, decimating powerful consilii that were once mainstays to the orders.
2001 - Increased intrusions appear with an alarming rate. Large portals start appearing, only visible with mage sight, and the Adamantine Arrow declare a state of emergency. They start sending many apprentices to the academy, starting the College of Battlemagic.
2006 - The portals and numerous abyssal intrusions start to wane down and enter a quiet period.
2007 - Professor of Magical Theory, Deshaunte Egboh, starts to find evidence of other potential Watchtowers, and formulates his hypotheses on the Watchtowers of the Soul (the classical five), and the Watchtowers of the World.
2009 - A powerful cosmic event can be felt throughout, as the first mages of the Watchtower of Brass and Flame from the Realm of the Djinn can be seen.
2010 - The Watchtower of Brass and Flame is considered the first Watchtower of the World. The Mysterium and Free Council further build on Prof. Egboh’s work to discover if there are others that would correspond.
2015 - Mages of four more Watchtowers are discovered and the full theory of the Watchtowers of the World has been formed. Prof. Egboh wins international recognition for his work.

Chapter 1: The Death of Magic
2019 - The first students showing promise that are representing the other Watchtowers are now being apprenticed at the Havrion Academy.

Chapter 2: The Names of God (just a preview ^_^)

      Current Setting and Mood:
The Diamond Orders have had a strong interest in both the wonders and the students from the Havrion Academy, especially due to the prophecies of Professors Colder and Tsinghua. Unknown to the outside world, the theoreticians and academics at Havrion know one thing is certain; magic is dying. As to why and how they can stop it and stop it from potentially spreading? That is the sole purpose for the school, its faculty, and students.

As magic dies, abyssal intrusions and other weirder things are becoming more commonplace around the world. The Adamantine Arrows have developed the College of Battle Magic to train and develop fierce warriors of the order in order to protect the masses (and potentially magic) from threats both magical and mundane.

The Mysterium wants to save magic by finding all grimoires, palimpsest, wonders, and other relics scatted across to world to see if this has happened before and if there’s a way to stop it. Surely, time is but a repeating cycle, they say, and there must have been some point in history (or pre-history) where mages had to contend with such a thing.

The Libertines are taking a different approach. Humanity is magic. While the Mysterium searches on Earth, the Libertines are looking beyond, not just to other realms, but other planets. Surely, life isn’t just on Earth, and thus they look to the stars, hoping to find that somewhere, out there, LIFE IS MAGIC, so that they can take it back to Earth to teach a new way or supplement what’s going on.

The Silver Ladder and Guardians are severe denial of ‘the death of magic’. They do not believe in the prophecies and consider it simply the Seers doing. As such, they are going out and increasing their actions against the Scelesti and the Seers of the Throne, to try to stop their perceived death of magic by removing any and all obstacles. Who knows if they’ll consider their peers obstacles in the future?

    • Antagonistic PCs - how to handle them

I'm not talking PVP in the traditional I WILL KEEL YOU. I'm talking more about antagonistic in the political sense. Like you have goals, and there are PCs who are there to be annoying/a thorn/even be divisive.

Why is it that most places I've seen just want to be one big kumbaya fests? How would you try to break that culture where everyone wants to be the 'hero' to where some people can be the 'villain'. Stories don't happen without conflict and villains are far more proactive than heroes anyday.

Would love to hear people's thoughts on this.

    • Brainstorming oWoD Games

I'm thinking of putting together a 20th Anniversary game. I want to do something different. I'm thinking potentially a multicity type grid where the game is mostly ST. While PRPs will be available, they will definitely have an outcome on the game. I'm tired of sandboxes.

Right now, the two main story possibilities are:

      1. The Pure Ones existed and are responsible for Avatar lineages (related Avatars that tend to have the same manifestation, and paradigm), Archmasters and Masters are relatively common, the Marauders and Nephandi are rare, Nodes are rare and other means are used to gather Quintessence, reality zones are potent, the Traditions do not cooperate but are internally organized, the Technocracy is shattered after a Nephandic purge, and users of linear magic are rare.

In this world, the avatars of the First Cabal/Council of NIne came back forgetting their previous lives but still have access to their powers. They broke the world, and the globe is now discrete districts focused on different magickal practices. It's a new High Mythic Age where the Traditions effectively won the masses and the Technocracy is the underdog.

      1. A world where things were fine until recently. Something happened (still to be decided the details) and now, the hunt for reality deviants is on strong, Marauder and the Nephandi are common, hedge mages don’t work much with their Awakened counterparts, Nodes are contested and the Traditions are largely in disarray.

In this world, it's chaos. Not exactly post apocalyptic but chaos. The Technocracy and Traditions are in a huge fight trying to cover up all the crazy Marauders trying to bork with the reality while Nephandi are trying to make everything descend.

As you can see, I wanted something totally different from City by Night settings where people just wait in coffee shops looking for something to do until they find their regular TS partner Would love thoughts as I continue to brainstorm.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Magicy Shenanigans - high fantasy or more modern

So I think I have found a system for a Brakebills game.

We can use Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition with al the yantras, etc.

Standard WoD build. People can buy arcana. But they can't cast spells unless it's a rote. IE you need it on your sheet.

Magicians and hedge wizards can only access rotes. Players are welcome to do "creative thaumaturgy" but that requires research and other actions (and OOC coding time to put it into the database) before they can cast it as a spell proper.

      Thoughts?

    • NeitherlandsMUSH - A Magicians/Brakebills Adventure

Set many years after both the book series and the television series, it seems that there is a new crop of students entering Brakebills. The exploits of Quentin, Alice, Eliot, and Janet (we use the original name) are most certainly legends to the students entering, who hear of otherworlds, the fountains, magical creatures, and kings and queens.

But all is not well in the world of magic. Something is coming. Something big. Rumor is that one of the third students left after receiving a powerful prophecy. It was said their talent was precognition/prophecy, and whatever they saw scared them to where they left. The professors don’t know the prophecy, but in order to be best prepared, Dean Fogg made the bold move to extend an olive branch to the world of the hedge magicians to join the classically trained students at Brakebills.

And so, the first set of hedge wizards, both as first years and transfers are coming in. They face rivalries and prejudice from the more classically trained students. Their styles don’t mesh. They don’t understand each other, and yet the professors know that in order to get through this next challenge, they must figure out a way to work together.

You are one of the these students or members of the faculty. Hedge wizard or classically trained magician, you have the power to shape the course of events in this world. Welcome to the Neitherlands!

WHAT: NeitherlandsMUSH is a game set in the world of Lev Grossman’s The Magicians. Taking advantage of AresMUSH, the MU* scope is anywhere in the multi-verse, with the homebase (grid) as Brakebills University. Roleplay is focused on adventure (to the multiverse), saving the world (cause you have to learn the plural of apocalypse) and other grad school shenanigans. We aim to maintain the tone and feel of the book series and the show, being serious in some points and being completely irreverent at others.
PCs play students or faculty. They can be regular humans new to the magical world, come from illustrious magical families, be half supernatural (faerie, yokai, etc) or even a werewolf (cause it’s an STI in this world).

      WHERE
      Website: https://neitherlands.world
      Game: neitherlands.world port 4201

      WHEN
The game will officially open probably sometime in the summer. Right now we are in Alpha/soft open so we can finetune and balance the custom/FS3 focused magic system we have in place. Yes there are theme files. Yes there are roster. No there aren’t any book characters. All characters will be new to this world. So come over and have fun!

We already have active metaplot going with a metaplot scene happening once a week. We have about 20ish PLAYERS.

I'd love some Mage the Ascension people help me tweak the magic system some. So if you're interested, come on down.

    • RE: Mage 2E Game - Set in San Francisco

      Update:

I have the grid built. Just need to finish descing, at least for San Francisco proper and to transfer it onto the game.

      Storywise:

1:1 preludes are being told while people chargen. Right now, I want to focus on Adamantine Arrows, Mysterium, and Free Councilors. I have some things for GoTV, but I don't know jack about Silver Ladder.

So if you're looking to make a character, I'd go with one of the three (AA, MYstie, FC) for now. I have an approved GOTV who will get missions and whatnot, but I have to admit where my weaknesses are from an ST perspective.

I hope to see people soon!

    • RE: Mage 2E Game - Set in San Francisco

      Updates:

+Sheet and CG are working. Stats still need to be updated to include merits from the latest Mage 2E books.

      Could use help on:

If anyone likes/loves building/descing, I could use help on that. I'm not doing things super granular, but using the general neighborhood map of San Francisco + the cities going down to South Bay (Palo Alto/Mountain View) and East Bay (Oakland/Berkeley).

IF people are interested or want to chat, it's still using the same Golden Road address from before. Just realize it's a WIP. But I can start telling stories in the Temp RP rooms as a means to take a break from building/coding.

      goldenroad.mudhosting.net port 4201.

      Look forward to seeing people!

    • RE: Mage 2E Game - Set in San Francisco

      Rostered characters?

I like the idea of putting together rostered characters where certain skills are put together already. The concept would be there, leaving the player to set the merit points (for merits, gnosis, etc), and also set the starting arcana.

However, the skills, attributes, and general concept would be there already?

Would that make things easier for people? Or is it a bad idea?

I'm relaunching Golden Road to be something different.

It's going to be a 2E Mage the Awakening game set in San Francisco. There will be a focused metaplot that will run via episodes.

I'm still rejiggering the code and building the SF grid, but I'd love to tell stories.

Stories in the meantime will be more preludes for characters. I'll run stuff for people while people figure out their stats. I think it'll be fun.
