Have we just hit a point in the hobby where we've whittled down to 50-80% people with cluster-b personality disorders who keep things going by swapping games/abuse circles? Because I keep seeing a steady drop in an already long out-dated medium, and it seems like the majority of people holding on are either doing so to maintain social connections with friends, or are just too entrenched in malfunctioning behavior to stop beating a dead horse.

This is a very good post and I would ordinarily give you 100% of my fiat, but this doesn't explain the giant My Little Pony MU* s.

@Arkandel will do. I am trying to be constructive, but I think what's happening here is some people are disagreeing and with differences of opinions inevitably comes some kind of you're dumb response.

I agree that there is a steady decline in the old guard of mushers who are focusing on established IP gaming. There may be more MLP players, but the core demographic of WoD/Star Wars/etc gamers has either plateau'd or has begin to trickle off in favor of other media.

      We...we should make a thread...about the population of MU*ing from 1990 - 2010.

Look, I don't play multiplayer FPS. The reason is that I suck at them; my twitch reflexes are just slow enough for assorted teenagers across the globe to effortlessly shoot me in the head. There's nothing wrong with the games themselves, I'm just not that good at them.

You should play with me sometime. I used to game semi-professionally, when the Cyberathlete Amateur League was still a thing; my mains were Counter-Strike and BF1942.

I used to be in a clan, then I progressed to becoming clan leader, until my parents convinced me that videogame tournaments would never actually become a thing.

Now that Major League Gaming and Twitch Championships are a thing, I feel really dumb for listening to them. Just a fad, they said. It'll never last, they said. Had I followed through and gone pro, you could have been hearing about Cirno, instead of Jonathan Fatal1ty Moron.

However, on the other hand, I'm 25 years old and I destroy the anuses of teenagers and small children in Battlefield 4, Call of Duty, and so on, from experience borne of playing Counter-Strike for five hours a day everyday when I was 13.

Unless I'm facing up against a clan of 4 or 6 people all working in team tactics with each other, I'm just leaving a ruthless trail of kids and teenagers with gaping anuses in my wake.

And don't let's talk about what happens when I'm high on stimulant-like drugs or amphetamines and I decide to play some FPSs. I turn into a robot - an Unmanned Weapons System that exists only to destroy mankind.

My kill/death ratio is usually good, with a 2:1 or 3:1, and when I really get cracking, I stand on 4 kills to 1 death, or 4:1. Occasionally I'll get through a match without dying once, but these are, as you said, kids and teenagers, not pro leet MLG dudes.

Anyway, it's not really about reflexes. It's about tactics. I can teach you my moves so that you can also destroy people's anuses.

      EDIT:

I'll give you a few tips:

      • Do not run around in the center of the map. Stay at long range, unless you're using an SMG in a close-quarters map. Your targets should be no more than dots in your gunsights. And if your reflexes are as bad as you imply, you have no business using an SMG. Stick to Assault Rifles, Designated Marksman Rifles, or Sniper Rifles.
      • Don't squeeze your trigger in a death-grip. Squeeze off a few short bursts at a time. Ideally, you should only be releasing 1-2 bullets per squeeze.
      • Do not let people see you. Staying out of sight gives you a huge tactical advantage.
      • Stay behind cover. Move from cover to cover, always keeping a solid wall or object between you and the enemy.
      • Crouch or go prone as often as possible.
      • Hold your position. Don't go towards people - let them come to you. Shoot them as they approach.
      • Grenades are useful for scaring or damaging the enemy, especially if they are behind cover.
      • Get high. Height is an advantage.
      • If you absolutely must run around, run behind another guy. Protect that guy - but it's not important that you do so. Basically, you want the enemy to shoot him instead of you, but in an ideal situation, you can protect them from being killed.
      • Check your corners. Look left, look right.

      EDIT2:

You know how people always say, "Videogames don't make you a better shot in reality!"

Well, when I turned 21 and started buying real-life firearms, I found that I was quite proficient at shooting them in the range. I was also familiar with the basic methods of gun handling.

I'm not trying to imply that I am Citizen-Soldier Extraordinaire, Solid Snake, or anything. Just some food for thought.

EDIT: I'm still kinda twitching from VASpiders beau's character: Reggie. The adorable WW2 era prop-plane fighter pilot who was an OTTER WEARING A LEATHER PILOT'S CAP. He had a magical bug biplane in the Hedge that carried everyone around like a magical school bus with wings. There was nothing of Darkness about that character. He only RPed in scenes with Spider anyway, or scenes where they were going to go his way, and it was a lot of "cheerio good chap. Let's give the Axis a good rogering, oy!" stuff.

He reminds me of the Hares from Brian Jacques's "Redwall", or my personal signature female Zebra OC, who has a British Broadcasting Company announcer's Received Pronunciation accent.

This is a picture of her. The guy behind her is her BF.

You are not contracted, obligated, or otherwise forced to do so, but if you include people in your character's play-space, you will become more popular and you will enhance that person's experience knowing that they will do the same for you.

This is such a lie. I cannot count how many times I have experienced/heard from others "Well I invite you to all of my stuff, but you don't invite me to yours."

One of the things I'm finding lately is that I am pulling back from my usual hyperbolic ways, only to realize why I was that way to begin with: The number of times people take what I'm saying to some theoretical logical conclusion.

Making space for people is not bending backwards for them. Nobody who asks you to be a doormat has your interests in mind, and you should take no shit from them.

If you are turning yourself into a doormat, you are trying too hard. Relax. Chill. Take no shit from yourself.

MUSHing is an inherently selfish experience, where 9 and 3/4 times out of 10, people will take what they can get while excluding others who give them RP/plot for justifications x, y, and z. Maybe they're even legit justifications. But not usually.

Which is why I think that not doing this should be a requirement. Fuck these selfish people. Fuck them right in the ear. If people cannot share their play-space, they have no right to mine.

But you have no control over them. You have control over you. The only thing you can do to help the game is make the attempt, to give other people a chance to fail on their own actions and not because of your preconceived notions.

If you can't be bothered, even with the smallest amount of effort, to try to include people who are in your scenes, then you're part of the problem. It's these people who need a punch in the cloaca with a dagger and tossed out the airlock.

      --

This is an extension of a discussion that began long, long ago on Swofa, I believe by TNP or PsyJack that was this: We are the source of many of the problems we complain about.

If this is true, then we need to think differently about what we do, change how we do it. I don't admit to massive failure because I'm trying to score humility brownie points with anyone, I'm doing it because we all need to take a more adult view of the problems.

Having a place to vent is nice, but who is trying to solve the problems? (Yes, several of you are. Cookies to each of you.)

So, basically, you're saying that we can start to solve our problems by taking a good look in the mirror, and saying, "Fuck...you" (to ourselves)?

Your wisdom is nearly Taoist in nature. Have you been reading Laozi's Tao Te Ching?

      Edit:

Honestly, I can see where you're coming from because 75% of the time I lash out at people, I'm really lashing out at myself because I am angry at myself.

I have enough first and second hand accounts of stories like this that I no longer believe any horror stories anyone tells me about anyone. Oh, I will politely pretend to believe you, and sympathize, but in my heart of hearts I'm wondering what your damage is. So if anyone ever tells me about how shitty EvilBobOne is, I will nod, smile, and think "crazy alert, crazy alert, wee-ooo-wee-ooo"

Up until you go to jail, or the hood, and somebody tells you, "Ayo, don't fuck with that D-money nigga, he gonna stab your ass."

And then you ignore them, and, well, that's how people get stabbed.

Shangrila is comatose, unless you are part of the established cliques, or a staffbit.

The staff raised the age limit for charbits, when I last played there, which caused groups of people to leave.

Also, the grid is mostly empty. At one time I distinctly remember the grid being full of bits...and so do many other old Shang heads I have discussed this with.

      @People said:

"Hardy-har-har, CIRNO, nobody wants to play with you on Shangrila because ur gay and dumb. Lawls."

I reasonably doubt this. On other games, people show more than a passing interest in playing with me.

Like, right now? On Cobalt's game? The instant I log on, people want to RP with me. This doesn't happen on Shang, in spite of the hundreds of playerbits online. A quick glance at the WHO will show you that most of them have been idle for hours, in their private grid rooms, or in the OOC Bar and Grill's Rumpus Room.

      @Luna

When you and Thenomain make this inevitable MLP/WOD MUSH Crossover, let me know. Vampires exist in the FIMverse, so it would happen quite seamlessly.

I don't really like MLP because of the Awkward Token Ethnic Character(Zecora), and as a black individual, her whole Tribal African Zebra Vibe rubs me the wrong way, but I'd swing by, roll a Zebra charbit, all that good stuff.

@Cirno That would be legit amazing. And I have issues with Zecora on many levels. She's a cool concept, I love the zebra thing really on a visual level. I don't like that they made her super...just...everything. The voodoo thing is a super cop out on all fronts. And her dolls are sad but her figurines are pretty cool but still, she's not as consistently nice as the others.

I have an account on FiMFiction.

You can see a picture of me there!

I've been putting together a treatment of the Zebra home continent. Mostly, I wanted them to have an Actual Civilization, and not just live in huts like Zecora.
