    • RE: Changes to The Hog Pit

The idea of making the Hog Pit opt-in is less about the recent explosion of crazy -- if you'll recall, their crazy happened in the non-Pit areas first, and were then moved as appropriate -- and more about trying a new way to encourage more discussion rather than all ugly all the time. We don't dislike the Pit, and certainly we've all posted there our share.

It's an attempted shift in focus, I suppose. Making it opt-in means someone who wants to interact with that level of vitriol (giving, receiving, or just watching from the sidelines), has to make the decision and act on it, rather than it being splashed willy-nilly even on those who don't care to do so.

She says with run-on sentences a-go-go.

    • RE: SunnyJ's Anti-Sexual Harassment Guide

Player logging isn't quite useless, but it's close. As wiz investigating complaints, I've received doctored logs more than once. Heck, I've received logs that were carefully doctored by multiple parties so they matched and the other singular side didn't.

Personal logs are good for your own reference, absolutely. As a reminder of what some asshat's behavior was like before so you can keep it in mind in following the other steps, boy-howdy. But as 'proof', they're not great. Game-logs, on the other hand, are less likely to get futzed with.

O hai. I glance at this thread now and then, but I don't care enough about any of the topics (other fora, booze, angry ranting between adults) involved to be all up ins with the Mod Voice. So far nobody's done anything worth banninating or thread-closing or the like. I've a mild itch to separate the booze into its own thread, but that's my tidiness talking, not actual concern.

Carry on carrying on. Theno will speak up if it gets so awful it just can't be borne. He's not the only one, any MSB user is welcome to ask for an ice-bath from the three of us. But understand that if you ask me to read the whole thing and make a call, it might not be the call you want. We're trying to be as laissez faire as possible about this shit. I don't have the interest or energy in being anyone's mom.

    • RE: Changes to The Hog Pit

@Admiral said in Changes to The Hog Pit:

Hiding it won't change the content of other posts.

It will just decrease the number of posts in the Hog Pit.

You're absolutely correct that it won't change the content of other posts. That's not the point of the shift in focus. 🙂

I want to allow the Pit to do what it do, but not have it front and center. This is an attempt to do so. It might turn out that this doesn't have the effect we aim for; it's easy enough to change back if that's the case. We're not married to this idea 'til death do us part.

But I at least want to see what the board can do when the Pit and its environs are opt-in instead of automatic; what sort of tonal change will or won't take place? I'm personally hoping it's towards the positive (that is to say, towards conversation and benefit-to-community, not specifically treacly sweetness-and-light). Glitch and Theno can speak for themselves on what they hope to get out of it.

As to decreasing the number of posts in the Pit itself, I suspect that putting it behind a curtain will make folks even more likely to go vitriolic, but I'd be glad to be wrong.

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

      Tangent to Auspice:
I wouldn't mind a fork. The conversation may gain more views and opinions if it was split, since people tend to put threads out of mind once they think they know what's in it.

      On track:
Whether or not to include something like the Hog Pit was discussed before we started up MSB. At first, it was just a category; it spilled everywhere (we deliberately didn't mod much, so this isn't a surprise). After further discussion we decided to make that particular side of things opt-in. This way the people who didn't want to participate in the uglier bits wouldn't need to. Heck, it's possible to go in and out of the Pit Crew with a few clicks, so it's not a permanent decision in either direction.

How would removing it entirely -- a step further than opt-in -- help? I'll state plainly first that I don't think it would help, but I'm not in charge n'more, so I can ask in full curiosity: how do you-all think it would? My desire for a grown-up conversation with as many people as possible about MU nonsense is not secret. How would removing that outlet help us achieve my personal not-so-secret wish?

It may be a broader question, I suppose. I think the 'darker' emotions are just as valid and important as the lighter ones, so my opinion on these things is biased. I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying mucking about in the uglier side of things, so long as you're making sure that the people with you also enjoy it (see above re: opt-in). I'm not sure denying that is a good idea; I'm open to hearing why I'm incorrect on that score.

      @Jaunt

The typical is to post about your project once. If someone comments or questions, respond. Conversations ensue. I don't know of anyone else offhand who continually posts without the 'someone comments or questions' portion of the equation.

This is not a specific rule. It's the developed-over-time unwritten social agreement.

The whole world isn't ending because I said I was going to go in and clean up the electronic files from a year ago that you never looked at again and don't plan to ever use!

Reading "it's just math, you just need to have more calories out than in" fills me with burning rage, because as a Type I diabetic, it's not just that basic. h8 h8 h8. I'm losing weight right now not because I changed my diet or my exercise, but because this stupid insulin pump got my levels regulated. That 'basic math' formula can have all sorts of hidden adjustments and ignoring that fact is frustrating as fuck.

It'd be less bad if that jackass kid would get killed off already, UGH. I want him to get eaten so bad. But then I fear he'll get taken to be the new body of the Master and then we'll have a terrible child actor wearing the most amazingly goofy mask in the world. O The Strain.

I don't bother with wiki until I'm about to play with someone. We can make a scene happen no matter who or what we respectively-are. The wiki helps with the what, not the whether.

    • RE: Finding roleplay

I'm not sure where that need for permission comes from. All of the plots I've run recently (currently on BITN) have been pick-up whomever is around doing whatever I feel like running. Sure, I told tragedyguy about them afterwards, but that's mostly because he made such a sad pouty face when he asked. At no point did I ask for permission, nor do I feel the need to do so.

I suppose I feel the need if my plots turn out-there and off-the-wall huge (I asked for permission to use a Keeper on TR after I wasn't staff n'more and was told no) but in general? Every-day just-gonna-run-somethin'? Nope.

Just do it, as the swish commands.

I've never logged into Fallcoast for what are hopefully obvious reasons. 🙂

      I'll amend, then:

Just do it, as the swish commands. If you're on a game where staff are pulling penny-ante petty control games on what can be used in reasonable^ pick-up RP, go play make-believe somewhere with less lameass restrictions.

      ES

^ Reasonable is in the eye of the beholder. Levels of the same will vary from place to place.
