Famous Artwork: Choose a famous painting and write about it.

When I see his face on the canvas, I know: there is no change. We did not speak every day before. We do not speak every day now. I thought of him in fleeting moments before. I do the same now, as the mood strikes. The light plays across the oil to set his eyes sparking, just as the light did across his face. There is no difference in the end. I thought there would be. When I caught him in the painting, it was to hold him to me forever. I was certain our love would stand the test of time, that having his image would help to cement what lay between us. But no, now he is only a silently screaming wraith trapped in fabric and I am left wondering if my new neighbor is thinking of me as I think of him. Perhaps true love will blossom there? So many have failed me, but this time... this time it will be better. I know it.

      Glitch

I'll be helping with the move, so I'll try to make it as smooth as possible, including setup and whatnot on the new server. I don't expect too much downtime from it outside of the usual transfer of data and domain name transfer process.

MOOC: Ethical Leadership says that ethical leaders are shaped by narratives, particularly their own in conjunction with the background of the world physically, culturally, politically, economically. Those narratives shape the leader-to-be and how she presents herself outwards.

MOOC: Science of Every Day Thinking tells us that memories aren't etched in stone, that they change every time they come up. That we're not lying deliberately if we remember something incorrectly, but truly remembering with all the strength of our brain's inability to store objective truth.

How do these two lessons interact? Does reinvention of self (however unconscious it may be for the purposes of this question) remove the necessary authenticity of a Leader? If we're constantly rewriting our own stories for ourselves, whether to make ourselves more the hero or less, are we also turning a true narrative false? As far as slippery slopes go, it feels a little shaky underfoot to say it's okay for this to happen. But if it's not okay, how on earth do we fight our own internal mechanisms to keep it from happening?

EL (Tony Morrison quote) goes on to state that memory is a form of willed creation. It's not the search for the way it really was: that's research. Instead, the point is to dwell on the way it appeared and why it appeared in that particular way.

Does acknowledging the potential falseness of the memory make it less abhorrent to be false? Where does the need for honesty (to self, if not to others) as a facet of honorable behavior, fit into that concept?

To twist it to MU-focus: We save logs, both on our own and on wiki, to remember what happened as if that were the whole of the situation. But reading a log doesn't tell us what mood we were in, whether our friend was being friendly or snippy in those paged asides. Every time we go back and re-read, we do so as if the situation were happening new, with that moment's emotional weight on the text. Is there a way to use that to our benefit as a community?

Here's my entry, written over lunch while thinking about how much I enjoy Tsuro, which is kind of the opposite of this challenge.

      BUMPER CAR DERBY

Theme: Four bumper cars going from the start to the end. Easy, right? Well they are bumper cars.

Goal: Make it 15 spaces on a board that is built with square tiles as you race. Each tile represents your path.

      Mechanics

Draw until you have three tiles in your hand. The face of these tiles are hidden from view of the other players.

Lay one tile so that your token (bumper car) is moved along the path. Each tile has multiple paths and can be placed in any configuration. You must lay the tile so that one side lines up exactly to the tile next to it.

If the tile puts you on the path of another player's car, you have run into them and sent them spinning. Move their car onto a different path on their tile and then follow it to the end of that path. This is where they end up. Do the same for your car.

If any bumper car runs into another bumper car, you get to pick the paths the new cars end on until all cars stop moving at the end of a path.

If a car ends up back at the start line, they can place a new tile next to any existing tile at the start and try to catch up.

The first car over the finish line, after the track is 15 tiles long, they win.

      Trade-offs

As long as the tiles are well designed, the players will weave and exchange positions, allowing someone who can follow all the existing paths to see the best way to get to the finish. As the track gets laid out, other paths will become available so that someone kicked back to the start can jump forward on existing tiles. Bumping someone off their current path should throw them back several tiles, or may put them in the way of another player, or may force them to place a tile sideways delaying their forward momentum.

      Stupid bumper cars.

Each tile side should have 2-3 paths available with many ways to cross paths and a few, but not overwhelming number, of turns.

My 'unread posts' notification is flaky. Sometimes it delays 5, 10, 30 seconds before saying there are unread posts (the situation is not there were one and then someone just posts but rather hour worth) and sometimes it doesn't go on at all till links get clicked and pages loaded.

That was the intention, yeah, given the title of the thing. Didn't realize that it would make anyone get all grrface, but it's the internet, what can you do?

It was a plot consisting of 11 scenes involving 13 seperate PC and ended with Patrick making a deal with them after a series of assaults against important officers within the Free Company, and killing the Leaders second-in-command, which forced them to abbandon all activity in North America.

I mean I am European so my scenes aren't in the ideal time for americans, but that's bigger than most plots and I guess I'd count it as attention.

Anyway, I am derailing at this point I guess.

Nah, it's important to get shit like that out there. People often assume that their personal experience is indicative of the larger state of things, and it's often not the case.

MOD VOICE: On request by the poster(s), and after some discussion with my fellow admin (we don't really see the point of this but it's asked and it's no skin off our backs in the end), I'm going to be removing @Bobotron's original post, as well as @Jaspar's second. That said, we're not interested in willy-nilly removing the posts the rest of you have made, so I'm going to be moving those to a new thread for this topic and life will go on.

I encourage someone with more vim about the idea of after-the-fact editing to toss up a discussion-topic on the idea, not about this in specific, but about whether we as a community think it's a useful thing to find acceptable, or not.

Off the coast of the Zephyr Isles congregate thousands of green-winged terns, their dark feathers blackening the water. The fishermen and sailors consider them bad luck and shoot them if they get a chance, although it's bad luck to eat their flesh, which tastes foul enough at any rate. The locals say the birds cluster around near whenever somebody's about to die, waiting to steal their soul. Sometimes they fly about silent as the grave, and that means that their prey's escaped. Sometimes they make a deafening din of jubilation, and fly off back to the island where they nest. No one speaks that island's name, nor approaches it neither, for its ringed about by sheer crags and surrounded by fierce whirlpools that will drag a ship into the rocks.

I've heard tell of a small, wooded island that moves around, so no one may find it twice; I've heard many names for it but most call it the Wanderer. At the center of the island is a pool of water so still and clear you'd think you could reach out and scrape the bottom with your fingers, but the best divers of the Bay of Emeralds have tried in vain to reach its depths. Still, they say the water is good to drink- but don't harm a single living thing on that island, beast or bird or tree. One mad old drunk in a bar in Balig told my uncle of how he alone refused out of fear to eat from a wild pig they'd caught. He woke up the next morning alone. Their clothes and gear were all still there, but his shipmates had vanished. Swore he saw a lot more pigs running about, though.
