@Ganymede I will however say that having staff sphere seems to not have worked. It might be the implementations we've seen and not a problem by design but it's led to staff looking after 'their' turf instead of looking to serve the game's interests as a whole and to spheres ran as islands in multi-sphere games.

This is often a function of expertise. You wouldn't want me weighing in on your Demon, Changeling, Wraith, or Mage requests because I approach all of these with varying levels of incompetence. Vampire I'm pretty solid, Shifter I'm smarter than your average invertebrate but not an expert.

Expertise aside, it's totally reasonable to require book references for things and even without sphere expertise I can look at a request, look at the book reference, and try to sanity check things that may not jive. That at least lightens the load for the experts a little bit and grants me a few points in Sphere Ability: Foo.

Sphere-specific staff is an obvious solution to limited expertise, but it doesn't age well. To survive, a game doing that really needs procedures for handling requests outside of one's realm of expertise.

As much as I like Apocalypse World (and its many spin-offs like Dungeon World), it is still a Game About Stats. It is one of the most focused Games About Stats that I have seen in a long time; it doesn't matter what the other person's skill is, if you succeed lives on your stats alone. This keeps the game rules part more understandable and accessible. Mind you, all the AW games are pretty damn dark.

      Yeah, true.

Is there any way the thing on the side can say when the last reply was made, rather than when the thread was created?

Some things should be open to all, some not... If you're not allowed to know your accuser, there should never be more than just a sternly worded page to you. That being said, I can see an argument for keeping identities secret. I just had the pleasure of having a 'Dominant Alpha Male' as he called himself, thrown from a mush because he was trolling every female characterbit (assuming said person was a female IRL) to become a submissive for his harem, and not getting a clue when most of them would tell him to GTFO.

So meh, where do you draw the line? Can I be frankly honest and say that anything you say to anyone in a mush setting will get told to someone else, no matter how much you say 'oh this is hush hush, just between you and me' mushers are gossipers. I can count on one hand the number of the umpteen hundred mushers I've played with, that I could actually believe would keep a secret. Sometimes I tell wicked lies just to see how long it takes before someone will spread it, then I make sure to let them know they failed that test. Yes I am a bastard.

Staff discussions, they're shared with everyone, everyone knows what you said, everyone knows what is going on behind the scenes, to pretend otherwise, not only makes you hypocritical when you make a big announcement saying quite the opposite of what happened. It is just the way it is. So, do you need transparency in some things? Maybe? But to me, the biggest thing is, when you approach someone from a Staff/OOC perspective, be honest. Honesty is probably the biggest thing that negates the need for transparency.

If everyone was honest with each other and upfront and straightforward, we could probably quash most of the issues that hamper mushing today.

Also, 'you' in this case, is a generalized 'you' not you specifically ES. 😄

I think this is one of those cases where the fewer rules that exist the easier it is for the community to enforce it via culture rather than active administration.

Admins can take care of the Big Ones; spam, for example. RL threats or exposing RL information is another biggie. Stuff like that.

Otherwise let the chips fall where they may. If someone lacks the thick skin to take an occasional flame or two (and we all have) they should not be here.

My concern is that people who play on TR feel "WORA" in general has some beef with "them"

I agree with Admiral. I don't think people are this paranoid anymore, especially since there really isn't a Wora unless you (you specifically, the person reading this post) wants there to be.

Everyone is afraid that people will bad-mouth them, make their lives harder than they need to be, and undermine their trust. Hell, look how I can flip out when I think someone's doing it to me.

People immediately disliking a forum is a risk when it's open and has lighter than usual moderation. This is why I've tried to stay in the background here, posting far less than I used to. If things change to become more trustworthy, then there's a better chance of collaboration, which means a better chance of new games and healthy playgroups.

Of course that means you (the person reading this post) also has to change. New forum, new year, new you.
