    • RE: Good TV

      Finished The Witcher.

I really liked it. I needed something a little different than the usual. My partner even got into it. What they did with Yennefer was fantastic, and while there was some holes in logic I could forgive lapses with the overall aims of her storyline.

I think it really captured what gamers came to expect from the series: a lot of side-quests; a funny bard; copious but not overwhelming nudity; and violence. I could have done with some more monster-killing, but that's not really what the books were about.

I'm looking forward to next season, definitely. Especially knowing that most of the scripts and direction will come from women.

But you're probably better off glossing over it than you are getting lost in the weeds about that sort of thing.

This may be true if you are aiming for ease, but I find myself drawn to people who can play trauma well and have had much deeper connections with the characters that have been through the same.

One piece of advice I've gotten regarding writing cultures or identities that I am not is: Write the characters, but not the stories. That is to say, write about a black guy, but don't write about being black.

I know too many black people to be comfortable with omitting mention of them being black.

"Is it sex, or is it creative writing?"

If communicating about sexual scenes we enjoy is considered only creative writing, then why is it considered "taboo" to publish the private sexting conversations between two consenting adults?

      I’ve been drinking, but —

      — fuck that shit. Serious. Being a lawyer doesn’t mean you are the end all be all of legal knowledge.

      Fuck that shit.

A firm is a football team. Everyone has a part to play. Letting people play their roles is what makes the team work. You know your shit? Speak the fuck up.

Maybe that is why my support staff loves the shit out of me. We missed a court order’s requirement, and my assistant was beside herself at her desk crying because she felt responsible. I had to tell her, no, I’m the attorney, I’m the partner, I am responsible and it is not her fault.

We still won on those late motions, and then settled within authority.

@Pandora said in TS - Danger zone:

But what if their 4 hour scene of relaxing, no-stress TS with a player they enjoy writing with comes just after a fraught 4 hour scene of PCs shouting each other down while building complicated, far-fetched plans that try to account for every possible variable so they can't possibly lose, accusing the NPC of being too cryptic in borderline-OOC ways that amount to 'If I were in charge this would be going much more smoothly but I can't be bothered to run things I'm not the star of' and now finally they can just bump uglies with the chick that requested this plot in which she gives birth to a potential Chosen One?

Simply, too bad. If you want to have a relaxing, no-stress TS scene, do so with a PC. If you are going to take control of the NPC, then use it for its purpose: driving the plot. Hence, why I support letting staff have their own PCs, albeit with some limitations.

As much as I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE when people are TSing to the detriment of the game/plot, I really don't think it's anyone's business who is TSing whom so long as the game/plot is being taken care of.

I also don't care with whom the staff member is TSing while playing an NPC. I care when the staff member is wasting time with the NPC that could be better spent pushing stories.

Well sure, but we're not just talking about the characters. Do your attitudes and 'desires' form the foundation for your TS (not just IC sex) or are your attitudes and 'desires' find their form from the game itself?

The latter. It should always be the latter.

Because my attitudes and personal desires are as follows:

We play in a hobby where people routinely choose not to read news files and, for example, things like Gray Harbor's 'don't you dare spoil Game of Thrones' had to be put in bright red in the connect screen.

      So, like, neon colors, please.

It is never advisable to set policy based on the lowest denominator.

Anecdotally, I am fairly sure that most people expect privacy unless under suspicion. To think otherwise is a combination of naivete and willful ignorance.

@nyctophiliac said in The Art of Lawyering:

Do lawyers have stereotypes of other kinds of lawyers?

Many, in my opinion. Most revolve around their location or area of practice. For example, 'round here we look at people from Cincinnati and Cleveland as nightmarish golems. As another example, domestic relations (divorce, custody, child support, etc.) practitioners by stereotype argumentative for the sake of being argumentative, which has been consistent with my experience.

      Are all lawyers pessimistic?

Depends on who you talk to. Prosecutors, current and former, are pretty pessimistic and/or jaded. Civil attorneys can afford to be a little more lighthearted. I consider myself realistic. As I tell a lot of prospective clients, I have time to bullshit or blow smoke so if you don't believe me find another lawyer who tells you what you want to hear, takes your money, and gets you to the same outcome.

Are you all amazing in social situations because of your jobs? Or do you think that it's a prerequisite?

It is definitely not a prerequisite. I can tell you from my years of practice in the civil arena that you can generally lump people into three different kinds of practitioners: (1) the salarians; (2) the turians; and (3) the elcor. The salarians are annoyingly outgoing; the turians laconically grind through the business; and the elcor are stubborn, tedious motherfuckers that make you want to tear your eyes out. None of them are particularly well-versed in human social conventions.

I can also tell you that I fit mostly into the first category, and get along with people in that category best. The turians I can deal with regularly, but they too busy to ever be particularly useful. And the elcor are just the worst.

Is there a lawyer joke you just should absolutely not ever make under any circumstances?

Not that I know of. Make all the jokes you want. Einstein said something about intelligent people ignoring others.

That's not even getting into some people getting approved because staff is their friend and "they can be trusted with this".

      I dissent.

Yes, I know. I know. I know about the past corruption. I know about the present corruption; y'all have examples, yo, and I get that. And I also know that this line is abused to the shit, bro, and I have been on the receiving end of such bullshittery when I applied for IC positions.

I get that. Here's the thing, though.

If I have spent eleventy-billion hours of my time and effort to build a game, and that game needs a PC or an NPC of considerable importance who has an active part in keeping the game going, then I am going to guaran-damn-tee you that I'm not going to open him/her/it up for open application. It's just not going to happen. I am going to pick someone who I know to be responsible, honest, and, most importantly, courageous enough to stick it to me and tell me, "Gany, you ignorant slut, << their point here >>."

And that person is likely to be a friend, as close as any lawyer-cat-bot has to having a friend in the MUSH-verse.

If people don't like that, they can kiss my shiny metal ass. I am not going to let a stranger have such a position on my game, period. "Gee, why did Gany pick << let's say Caryatid >> to play << important PC on game >>, huh, huh?* Yeah, because she's got a track record in my books as being someone I can trust with that position, you dimfuck. It's my fucking game, and, like my fucking house, I'm not going to let a fucking unknown come in and potentially fuck it the fuck up. If you've a problem with that choice, so be it; deal with it or get the fuck out, I don't care.

"They can be trusted with this" is a perfectly-acceptable explanation to me (as long as that is the proffered explanation because I hate it when people try to come up with pretextual excuses to make them seem impartial when they're not).
