But I am told that because we opted into in-school before Omicron was even a known quantity, we cannot now opt for at-home to finish the year. This is the infuriating part for me about your situation. It does boil down to bureaucratic nonsense. I can't think of a reason why a student should be barred from switching how they take their classes, especially since virtual learning was permitted so as to increase flexibility.

This is why we're not allowed to do WFH anymore either. Too many conservatives got all mad that the government offices were empty, even though we were already planning on going to remote work for a lot of stuff and downsizing in an effort to be fiscally conservative, which is the freaking mantra.

Some businesses can be entirely remote. Government work is one of them. Just about everything is automated and, at worst, you could put one or two people in the office to man the phones and direct calls, if needed, but most modern, urban offices can direct calls electronically. Easy-peasy.

Other business cannot work that way. They just don't. Productivity demonstrably dips when people are not at the office or the place of production.

But most people don't understand that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions. All businesses are different in different ways. Garages cannot do their jobs from home, so shutting them down will kill them; but many office services can, and should, be done from home.

A little empathy and understand goes a long way.

Anyhow, I understand and empathize. My only point, if I had one, is that there's no one-size-fits-all solution here.

Even if they knew, would they still use it? I would argue, yes.

If the system cannot derive profit without depriving the worker of a proper wage, then it cannot survive without willing labor or demanding consumers.

Hence, I don't use these services. At all. Especially not Doordash, given my friend's experiences (who was in management of a retail chain of fast food restaurants).

To be clear, I actually do not wish this. I am not sitting here praying for the demise of the unvaccinated. Far from it: I hope they decide to get vaccinated in order to better protect themselves from the virus.

Rather I struggle to find sympathy for people who elect not to take the vaccine and end up suffering consequences for it. And you will find me on the side of folks who are willing to say that the voluntarily unvaccinated have caused countless hospitalizations and deaths.

Yeah, smallpox is a very different virus.

Coronavirus has always been endemic. This particular strain was deadly and contagious. As I said, the mutations seem to have made it more contagious but less lethal. And for viruses, this is a good thing: if you can propagate without killing the host, then you can go back once you have mutated in someone else.

Vaccinations should be regular, like the flu vaccine and other vaccines that can be taken. But the coronavirus is not going away.

I worked in a kitchen for a little bit, and learned to follow Colette Tatou's advice: "Always keep your station clean."

It actually helps a lot. Cooking is about timing, and I've learned how long each dish takes. Staggering them means I can put certain things on the stove or in the oven, and then take time to clean. It's how I can make a 10-appetizer meal for my dozen-or-so family members without going nuts.

So, here we have a disease that is known to be deadly ravaging a segment of the population that has had access to vaccines for months. We also have a population which remain remarkably stubborn in their refusal to do something that may prevent their death or the death of others.

I know I have compassion fatigue, but I am less concerned about a variant that I have probably caught before than I am about how a segment of dumb motherfuckers are getting themselves and others killed.

But again, 2016, and so on.

Whether a virus is contagious is not necessarily correlated with its lethality or severity.

That said, as has been established, my sympathy for the voluntarily unvaccinated is fairly low.
