So I start a new job on Monday. Retail supervisor still, but better than the one I've had since March. (& that better than being unemployed after my last company folded up.)

This job is like the poster boy for "nobody wants to work for you anymore" that's been going on the last few months. Management pay isn't terrible but the associates are getting minimum wage with a chance of commission, so we're supposed to have at least five but we have one and she's the teen daughter of one of the third keys.

The District Manager was in today talking about how he thought they'd start getting applications in again after the eviction moratorium expires. And that's my actual peeve. Dream big I guess; "this job is better than homelessness, so we are entitled to a steady supply of applicants."

Especially after Tusk. But I also feel like that movie was intentionally made to be just that insane. Like it's some kind of joke that I haven't quite figured out the punchline to.

So I haven't been able to find it in the ten seconds of Google (on mobile @ work), but the joke is that there was a real classified ad Smith talked about in a podcast offering rent-free housing to anyone willing to spend a certain amount of time dressed up like a walrus, so the landlord could relive the time he spent shipwrecked on an island with only marine mammals for company.

I can't remember if the ad was confirmed fake or just presumed, but it was still bugfuck nuts enough that Smith spent a while speculating on what would happen to any poor bastard who answered the ad. And since it's Kevin Smith, his BS sessions can actually turn into feature-length horror/comedies.

Does it have a price tag on it with a dollar amount listed?

Based on that, might you be able to make a guess?

@derp Well, yes, but even then, when a classical Greek elite talks about "saving" the hoi-paloi from their own bad decisions, a lot of the time what they mean is "the year their harvest failed I was gracious enough to offer them a ruinous loan, they accepted rather than starving out of their own free will, and now apparently I'm not even allowed to enslave them on their own lands to collect on the debt. What's happening to this polis, I ask you."

The flaws in democracy have been apparent since the first one was thought up. Plato wrote about it. Aristotle wrote about it. Extensively. It always, always leads to power creep and oppressive tactics. It's just inherent in the nature of the system.

Bearing in mind that part of the problem Aristotle and Plato had with democracy was that the "natural slaves" of the world got uppity rather than gratefully submitting to their betters, of course.

@ganymede So hey this is a couple days old but I have a lot of Thoughts about She-Ra and I'll take this as an excuse to word a few more of them out.

      ***=Rambling/Spoilers***

      click to show

So I've seen some people dismiss Catra's thing about Adora "abandoning her" going through most of the series, because Adora did ask Catra to come along when she defected. Which, yeah, true.

But, in context, Adora handled it really, really badly. She told Catra that she'd just worked out that the woman she'd watched abuse and threaten to murder Catra since they were children wasn't a good or trustworthy person, and because of that she was leaving behind all the plans that they'd made together and everything they'd hoped to accomplish. But Catra could come along too!

So, yeah, Catra has some really, really good reasons to feel betrayed and abandoned there. The most important person in her life just told her to her face that she rated behind these randos Adora just met, both because she would side with them against Catra, and in that Adora was willing to lead the Horde over what they were doing to them but not for what they'd done to her. It's really no surprise that she reacted... badly.

And so then Catra, without the thing that she relied on to keep her safe, did everything she could to make herself safe. Which, obviously, gets into the arc that culminates in S4.

Not saying Adora's the real villain or that Catra did nothing wrong, Adora spends the whole series trying to do the best she can with what she knows at the time. But Adora handled that about as badly as she possibly could have.

      ***=More thoughts, themes***

Also just thinking about Mara's thing at the end, how "you're worth more than what you can give other people," and how that's at least as much of a running theme as the cycles of abuse.

The villains in the show (not counting the random monsters or like Tongue Lashor) are the ones who treat people like things. (Granny Weatherwax would have something to say about that.) Including Catra when she's at her lowest. Hordak, Horde Prime, and Shadow Weaver all do it in different ways, but it's constant. And Adora's tendency to treat herself as a thing is presented as a flaw, which I think is really cool and unique; it's a problem that she's so willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good.

Hordak actually manages to do the "people as things" deal and the "cycles of abuse" deal at the same time; he relates to other people as tools to his ends, and his ends are all about his own function as a tool for Horde Prime. He can't even conceive of another source of validation (and I really, really love how his whole thing of only talking in ominous villain melodrama comes down to how socially awkward he is). He treats people how he knows how to be treated, but Entrapta starts him on his path to redemption by accepting him for who he is.

I'm sure you've read this, but just in case you haven't: the First Ones writing on the crystal Entrapta gives him spells "LUVD."

"Nobody wants to work anymore," I keep hearing.

Motherfuckers of course nobody wants to work, that's what work is. If they wanted to work you'd be charging them for the privilege. The whole thing is that you need to pay us to come work anyway.

If you won't offer people enough to work that's not a them problem it's a you problem.

Adopting a pet should be more like adopting a child than just buying a toaster.

Having seen a lot of abuse cases involving adopted children, some people should really just be relegated to buying toasters.

Amen. The same can be said for having children.

I have always been an advocate for a license to procreate, but my colleagues give me horrified expressions and lectures on human rights and state intrusions and how horrible it would be for minorities.

And yet... I dunno man. Still tempting. You want it because people suck, but you can't have it because people suck.

I mean. How would you even enforce it?

Mandatory invasive surgery, or just taking away every unauthorized birth and having the completely problem-free state care system handle it?

      Legit.

I loved the show, too. I really did. And (having looked up some comments from the showrunner) I absolutely agree that it's for the best that they didn't end with a flash forward; the glimpse of maybe we got was more than enough.

Just... more of a quibble than anything, the ending being on my mind as, y'know, the last thing I saw...

      ***=Finale talk***

So, okay. Scorpia is the thing that bugged me a bit about the truncated denouement.

Just because her arc had her realizing how badly Catra had been treating her, and getting the self-respect to break it off and strike out on her own. For as much as she defined herself as a people-pleaser, and as bad as she had it for Wildcat, this was a big step for her.

I would have preferred to see a bit more than an immediate unconditional forgiveness the next time she saw Catra, although I admit it's in-character for her.

Kinda similar, if we'd had more than a sarcastic comment from Mermista about Hoardak.

Not saying in either case that they should have ended the arc on a downer note! Actually really like the idea that (again, from outside interviews with the showrunner) Hoardak goes to clean up Beast Island as community service, and Entrapta goes along with him. Just would've liked to see that in the actual show, and some more for Scorpia (whose development got frozen for a good bit of S5).

But these are, ultimately, just niggles that I was left with at the conclusion, and if they aren't going to delve into them, then the generally upbeat, accepting, and loving finale was the way to do it.

The plot was great, the animation was great, I really cared about the characters. The cyclical abuse theme running through the villain side is definitely something that manages to be heavy without being inappropriate for the target audience. Really, there's so much going on with the characters, and especially the Adora/Catra/Shadow Weaver dynamic.

They even managed an episode where they do the thing where the main character sees something's up and her friends think she's seeing things, and make it not just be pure secondhand embarrassment that I hate watching.

So in recognition of goddamn everyone telling me I needed to, here and elsewhere, I finally sat down and watched She-Ra.

And yes, it was very, very good. I felt a lot of emotions about princesses with rainbow powers and ridiculous goofy names.

(seriously Bo or Beau would still be a pun)

My only quibble would be that... well, people were making comparisons with AtLA above, and in both of them I just felt like they would have been better with a full episode of denouement after the climactic confrontation. Just, with a cast this sprawling and so many emotional threads going the length of the series, I feel like they deserved a full episode's worth of resolution.

But overall, great characters, great conflicts, some remarkably heavy stuff while still being appropriate for children. May, y'know, have prompted a Single Manly Tear or two.

Also really liked how it reframed some character traits in the main cast into character flaws that are usually presented as categorically heroic traits.

Also, I feel ashamed that someone had to point out to me that Horde Prime was, like, so much fundie imagery. As presented by a queer woman who grew up in a fundamentalist household. I am very good at analysis dammit.

Oh, and a few things that I still just find so very amusing. Brightmoon's dungeon. Entrapta's realization of which side she's on. Everyone's interpretations of Catra in the D&D epsidode. Bow's refusal to cover up his abs.

      @macha Shit. I'm sorry.

...as far as noticing the differences with the medicine goes, for what it's worth, I've never noticed a big difference myself. It's people around me who've noticed that I've decided that means they're dumb and I should stop taking them. So, personally, not feeling the major changes I've heard other people describe didn't mean it's not being a help.

I wish you luck at it.

Personally: I went to a one-time visit with a specialist on ADD. He was out of network, and it was not an inexpensive ~30-minute conversation, but it got me documentation of a diagnosis.

This has been useful. Hopefully your PCP can and will help, I've had to do some shopping around for doctors.
