Back in December 2012, a buddy of mine was incredibly adamant that I open a Coinbase account and buy as much Bitcoin as my finances allowed. It was going for ~$660 and some change per bit. I figured I could afford $2k.

I started the process but then got weirded out they wanted so much personal info. Suffice it to say, I bought no Bitcoin and forgot all about it.

As of typing this, Bitcoin is going for $15,978.46 per pop. If I'd just gone through with the buys, I'd be up $46K and some change. FML.

@auspice That's one of my fave Key & Peele sketches. I also die at how much the white chick costs in Wendell's video for "The Power of Wings".

JCVD, the man and the movie. (I'm always giddy watching the opening scene.)

Super psyched that Jean-Claude Van Johnson starts up on December 15th!

@templari We used to have a Chia Head we would wrap and regift to various family members back and forth on whatever the next available gift-giving holiday was as a joke, but then she went and lost it. 😞

In high school, my friends and I had the Birthday Burrito, which was a frozen burrito from a gas station. Until one guy ate it because he was hungry and found it tucked somewhere in his freezer.

There never was another Birthday Burrito. 😞

The term cracker meant poor white people in Virginia

I always thought it referred to slave owners cracking the whip.

According to Wikipedia, you're both (kind of) wrong.

Not that I'm taking Wikipedia as the definitive answer, but I rank it somewhat higher than "something someone said on the internet". Wikipedia is more, "something someone said on the internet, but showed their work".

I was called a cracker once when I was in college. I was so utterly baffled. I peered at the person who called me such as if they were nutters for thinking that was an insult.

I thought I was being called a cracker because I was white like a Saltine cracker, and I asked wtf was supposed to be so offensive about that. Were they implying I was bland? (Not an adjective anyone ever has used to describe me, so the whole thing was extra ridiculous to me.)

That whole group of black people were entirely taken off-guard by my response. One of them told me it was for "whip cracker". I said that made more sense for an insult, except it wasn't accurate cos I am first-generation American and if they were insinuating that my eastern European Jew ancestors were somehow responsible for the slave trade, they really needed to better educate themselves.

      They gave up after that.

@auspice I agree, although the women in the scenarios he describes probably would consider such behavior far more than perverted. My response would probably be a violent one. >.>

And, in case it's important to note for anyone not interested in clicking the link, it's a scene from the tv series Extras. Pretty sure Patrick Stewart is an upstanding guy iRL. Would be bummed out if he weren't.

My mom is a tiny, white Frenchwoman in her sixties. This morning, she was singing the chorus to L.L. Cool J's "Going Back to Cali" around the house, then went to YouTube to listen to 2-Pac's "California Love".

I dunno if I notice a difference between two vs four blades. My experience is that cheap razors feel the same regardless of if they are targeted for men or for women.

I do notice a difference between a cheap and more expensive disposable razor, though. And if there is no swivel head? Ugh. No.

@faceless I personally use a safety razor. It shaves great, and for an one-time investment of under $100 I can get replacement blades for almost nothing. And the razor itself will last for basically your whole life.

Got a link? Googles pulling up some results that I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right thing/brand/etc.

Right now I'm using a Gilette Fusion, which with their disposable cartridge razors, comes out to about 8 for somewhere in the ballpark of $25, I think? I can go through one of those cartridges a week, easy. So something long-lasting and/or cheaper, while not being cheaper quality? Would be excellent.

To be honest I don't think the brand matters too much; I bought one from a small store in a town I was visiting for like $60 like... two years ago? And it's still in pristine condition. It came with a pack of something like 50 blades, and I'm just starting to run out now.

And the blades, especially compared to fancy multi-blade razors cost nothing. For example this is the first 4+-star match from Amazon which features 100 blades for like $10. Even if you only use them once (I use mine a few times before they are dull, but your beard might vary 🙂 ) they are absurdly affordable. And I love the shave they give.

My advice though, make sure to get something that comes with a base or stand... just to protect the blades by not resting them against the counter.

To me the multi-blade stuff are just gimmicks. We fall for it because they look cool in their cool packaging and their cool commercials.

I am not a fan of disposable razors. ($16 for TWO disposable cartridges that leave me stubbly and scraped, fuck you.) Will these blades you linked work in any safety razor?

@auspice Have you tried GoodRX? Depending on your insurance, you may not necessarily get a lower rate, but I've used it and found it helpful. It gives coupons for discounts. It also does price comparisons for different pharmacies.

NeedyMeds Storyline is another prescription discount app that also has the following features:

      • Medication reminder
      • Symptom tracker
      • Daily mood tracker and journal
      • Vitals tracker (e.g. weight, blood pressure, etc.)
      • Pain rating scale
      • Ability to sync with wearable devices (e.g. Fitbit)

There also is Free Drug Card, which the site claims "is a nationwide Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) sponsored by a non-profit organization to help all Americans lower their prescription drug costs. This program has LOWEST PRICE LOGIC to guarantee that you get the best deal on your prescriptions. Print your FREE discount prescription drug coupon card below. This free Rx coupon card will provide you with Rx medication savings of up to 90% at more than 68,000 national and regional pharmacies across the country including: Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Walmart Pharmacy, Rite Aid, Kroger, Kmart Pharmacy, and Safeway."

And if none of those help, you can always ask if your physician has samples that can tide you over. Some manufacturers also have assistance programs for qualifying people.

I'm sure it goes without saying, but abruptly stopping certain medications can be dangerous, and I'm gonna shut up now before I start ranting about the U.S. pharmaceutical industry and how I think it's immoral that some people have to go without medication.
