I absolutely remember places where you pretty much were expected to come up with bs reasons as to how your powers worked rather than just what they did, yeah

I'm curious how superheros get quantified into stats. They're so... wildcard, they can do anything. I've seen some systems (Champions?) that try to quantify any sort of power into a point thing and while those are cool, even it fell short on the one game I used it on.
When it's an OC place and you're building chars with that system usually it works fine cus you're creating them with that system in mind
But with FCs, I dunno, I've never seen it work and tbh I can't really remember a game that used system stuff that really went anywhere (tho again I was gone forever)
I like traits - like, yeah, the whole "it shows you know the char well enough to place them" thing was bullshit and "well just keep making them more and more complicated and detailed that'll work" just made shit worse by running off anybody who didn't want to write three pages for a single power but traits aren't bad as an idea and I think there's a happy medium between "Can you fight Hulk? Didn't think so!" and "(detailed analysis of stepping discs as folds in space time created with zero point energy)"

Am I the only person here who thinks that in the context of a game like this, being a goddamn dirty mutie overrides pretty much anything regarding their sexual orientation, race, etc?
They are already freaking out about you existing at all, you abomination. They fear and hate you. What more can they do if you're also fucking the wrong gender?
Seriously anything on top of Mutant and all that means is "see? See? Didn't we tell you they're all depraved?"

RE: X-Men Game
There are places you can do Year One whatever, like, I know for a fact at least one new place is gonna be opening where some of the worst offenders from UH aren't allowed (and no it's not a revenge game or anything it's p clearly been in the works for a couple months)
But there apparently hasn't been anywhere that's "yeah it's this plus this and cutoff is like this except this" for idk apparently over a decade? Like there's nowhere I can find where you can do anything close to modern comic stuff without making a giant amount of changes to fit in with year one crossover or just, like, rely on staff not paying enough attention to notice you changed nothing
So tbh it's kind of disheartening to see stuff go so super fast from "I wish there was something different" to "yeah but itd be great if it were the same tho"

RE: X-Men Game
as somebody who's done them, imo with comedy chars (and tho it hasn't been brought up I think it's also valid for horror chars just for different reasons) there's a p thin line between, like, actually contributing to stuff/adding comedic elements to scenes where they're appropriate and just, idk, laughing at your own jokes/jacking yourself off in a room where literally nobody wants any part of it
and if you're just running about "being your char" ooc then, like, 99% chance yeah you're just jacking off
Like, my Ladytron app probably is pretty obnoxious but I thought it still told you what you needed to know and wasn't just me rubbing against the keyboard

Penultimate destination i think?

this basically is all my fault so yeah I'll be happy to help

RE: X-Men Game
If going with the "Hope gets the Phoenix for a second and says yes more Mutants" thing she's, like, accomplished her Mutant messiah role and can just be an NPC that's never really brought up and if somebody wants to do one of the lights they're just normal Mutants whose powers kicked up in shit ways
Edit - yeah I've always seen the Cuckoos played as one char
-
RE: X-Men Game
Xavier isn't really involved with Utopia unless somebody really wants him to be around, the place is p much run by a council that's I think Dr Nemesis, Cyclops, Emma, Namor and Magneto
Cyclops is I guess "president" but everything doesn't fall to shit just cus of one person the way it tends to on School games
Magik probably belongs on the iconic list both because she's weirdly way more popular than I remember and because people apparently don't do just a piss poor job at her but, like, an actively terrifying job at her

RE: X-Men Game
For like 90 percent of chars there really isnt a giant ton of stuff you just like absolutely have to at all times remember
I mean for Colossus the points are idk something like
- was a villain for a little while
- died to cure he legacy virus
- got brought back to life by aliens
- cut off a alien's arm
I'm p sure nobody in this conversation gives any fucks for the ultra old school "you left out what happened in issue 179 of the Portuguese edition please redo your BG" approach

In the Utopia era different X-Teams had different jobs.
New Mutants: Take this list of loose ends and missing persons and tie them up/find them and either give us a status update or bring them here.
X-Force: This can not be allowed to exist. Get rid of it.
Etc.No alts on the same team seems fair.
X-Force gets disbanded at the end of Second Coming and Wolverine re-forms it but that series is super super super dumb so yeah if there's gonna be an X-Force just let somebody start it again IC
Also yeah there were a couple of different teams who had books and it was implied many more "groups" existed
-
RE: X-Men Game
Yeah I don't know why you'd restrict non-Mutants even on an X-focused or even X-only game, there are plenty of not-a-Mutant chars under the umbrella
-
RE: X-Men Game
Also after/because of Second Coming the X-Men are officially superheroes for a while and Cyclops gets a Presidential Medal of Freedom for the X-Men having saved the city
But that was mostly in SF and it could change super super fast with Mutants being born again and a ton of people who were supposed to be Mutants now having powers - as soon as that happened big in the X-books they were back to building for-profit Mutant prisons and shit

RE: X-Men Game
@zombiegenesis said in X-Men Game:
1: I really like the idea of "all mutants being available" in a non Year 1 setting. I'll have to look into that storyline.
Parts of it are less, like, absolutely canon and more me saying "you can extrapolate from this" and "change the ending of this"
So the nerd stuff:
There was an X-crossover called Necrosha where one of Selene's minions got ahold of the Techno-organic/Technarch virus or whatever and used it to resurrect, like, every mutant who's ever died and then sacrificed a bunch of them to become a goddess for maybe ten minutes before X-Force murdered the crap out of her. A New Mutant char (Cypher) came back to life, and it's hinted at the end that who knows how many actually went back to being dead - so you could just really easily say that, like, basically none of the ones who actually had names went back to being corpses
Second Coming's ANOTHER X-thing, and at the end of it, the bad guys put this giant energy shield/dome around SanFran and crazy powerful Sentinels start coming back in time to murder all the Mutants left since most are in that area and in particular really really really want to kill a kid named Hope. And at the very-the end of it Hope gets mimic-all-the-powers-around-her powers and kills the main bad guy and tears down the shield and then somehow new Mutants start to be born (but only like, seven until everything got derailed for AvX) - so just say "that's where our timeline splits" and, like... she just ends up with the Phoenix for a couple of minutes and kills the bad guy and tears down the shield THAT way, and then yes-more-mutantses.
So squish both of those together and tada you've got a canon game that didn't cutoff like 15 years ago, where people can do OC Mutants, and where everybody's more or less playable
-
RE: X-Men Game
Yeah I mean I personally don't really understand the appeal of having a ton of chars at the same time but apparently it's a huge appeal
I think an alt limit is totally rational and not something people's really fight but "you get just the one" would unfortunately just, like, totally hamstring you I bet
You would need to be pretty clear on alt-interaction rules and pretty consistent in upholding them in a setting with just Utopia and San Francisco tho
Edit: yeah so what @Ghost said way better and way more in detail
(I still don't like systems on FC super places tho)
-
RE: X-Men Game
Also Second Coming was when just a giant amount of X-Men stuff wrapped up so doing cutoff files would be pretty easy
Edit - totally forgot about them but with non-X stuff there's also I think Avengers Academy in the area
-
RE: X-Men Game
No, everybody being super young bugs the crap out of me too
My vote'd def be for Utopia with maybe Second Coming as the cutoff which is like
September of 2010 I think?
If Necrosha happened then you can say basically any mutant ever came back to life, and if you do that "Phoenix says no more no more Mutants" thing you can say basically any mutant EVER is playable (within, you know, limits - like I don't think Apocalypse or Selene or or Empath or etc should be valid for PCs)
So you've got a ridiculous slate of options for chars, in a place and time nobody's ever done a game, with a possibly way different feel than the X-Men usually have - like, if Fear Itsed never happens then SanFran kind of adores the X-Men
-
RE: X-Men Game
I'm maybe the only person in the world but I kind of like the written entry sheet stuff? I think doing it really helps you get into the character

@tempest said in X-Men Game:
ETA : Staff would also probably need to pick specific iterations of certain characters.
No, you don't have to play the character the EXACT SAME as in the comics, but no "this is alt verse cyclops and he's 19".
"Cyclops is in his 30s and the experienced leader of the X-men and blahblah. You have some leeway with his personality and can make your own decisions moving forward, but that's the general idea of Scott we expect to see."
Well yeah, it'd be a canon game, right? With a cutoff. So there's plenty of room for interpretation and player agency and etc but, like... yeah, a char should still fundamentally be that char
But letting people know a general age range is definitely helpful and as an added bonus wards away some of the people who refuse to do any char if they're not like 19 even when they should be 27 or w/e
