I guess if staff were pretty clear about it being first and format an X-Game and being thorough in deciding what does and doesn't fit and what can and can't be adjusted and all that then, idk, I don't think it'd necessarily turn into a complete shitshow but I'm admittedly a little skittish over just how prevailing the anti-canon anti-focus tide seems to be with what's left of the comic mu community

RE: X-Men Game
OH
A little post Schism Mister Sinister builds a private London full of clones of himself under San Francisco
And there's some Sublime Corporation stuff too
And if you really really wanted to I guess you could actually play out Avengers V X-Men but that was kind of a terrible story so maybe don't

RE: X-Men Game
The problem with the Brotherhood is that tbh I've never really seen it work or remember it being really even a force on a game, especially a canon place
So I dunno what to say for a driving villain thing but honestly I'm not sure you really need one? PC-wise at least, I don't think there really HAS to be a villain FACTION
With Utopia/SanFran you've also got some weirdness and some non-X stuff if you want, like, the Eternals live there cus there's a Celestial there, I'm p sure the main Agents of Atlas base is there, stuff like that, you can fudge stuff a little and say that The Order (California's super team from the initiative) is there instead of LA or say there's like a new West Coast Avengers or whatever
If you wanna diversify since I guess everybody's terrified of just one theme then, idk, there ARE some non-Marvel things that wouldn't be super onerous or totally distracting
Manhunter, most of the Gen13 cast, stuff like that, fairly low-priority chars who are at least somewhere in California

RE: X-Men Game
I know tree has a San Francisco grid
I will do w/e anybody wants except uh bear ultimate responsibility cus I can be a ridiculous flake and, like, "in charge of everything" is a super bad position to give somebody who sometimes just vanishes for a month

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
I am hoping that after a i guess cool down period that I can convince or if not convince then at least idk pester bother and harangue @Phase-Face into doing a game

Prototart's Super Brief Char List
HeroMUX: Claire Voyant, Fairchild
UH: Claire Voyant, Fairchild, Illyana (edit - I was also Ladytron but I never finished her)I haven't exactly played a ton of places in the past, like, decade
I was I think the second Fairchild on HM? There was somebody who was n52 (geneticist/shapeshifter/whatever) and then I did the Wildstorm one
But Id totally love to hear from the Freefall from HMUX like ... 4-ish? years ago, tho

Not long after that, the world learned aliens really exist when JFK was assassinated. By Loki. Except it turned out to be a Skrull taking his shape. Why? Because Kennedy was a long term Kree agent. Skrulls also tried taking over SHIELD by replacing agents but were stopped. The Kree are currently making life miserable for the Inhumans (who are still not out).
This is like the dumbest thing I've ever read and I love it so much I don't know how to put it into words
It's like Jack Kirby and Warren Ellis had a baby

tl;dr Nobody (except dumbasses) cares if you play a 'good' Wolverine/whatever who just happens to be gay, while staying active in your sphere/etc. When "I am playing gay so-and-so" becomes the focal point of what YOU as a player are doing, rather than just "I am playing so-and-so", is the problem.
ETA : This is just a general huge personal peeve for me. People have no concept of 'time and place' for when to do this stuff, and/or they are so desperate for attention, they'll put this stuff in the forefront when it has no real purpose. (Cough. Crossing to WoD for a second. Dragging ghouls to Elysium or into COURT on a leash and having them call you 'Daddy' in public scenes.)
Like goddamn, even if Dr. Strange and Rogue were doing SEX MAGIC shit.
WHY THE FUCK DOES LITERALLY ANYBODY ELSE ON THE GAME KNOW ABOUT IT?
There's a big difference between stuff like "oh that Spider-Woman is dating Psylocke" and "that Spider-Woman and Psylocke constantly make every scene about their relationship and talk casually about BDSM shit ICly and on channels and have invited 27 different other female PCs to BDSM Land with almost no cause".
yes this all of this

Now, those of us who pay attention and are smart know the reality, which is that Female Thor isn't a rewrite of Thor Odinson, but Jane Foster wielding the hammer.
My stupid nerd derail is that it isn't even a new idea, like, Jane having the hammer was one of the very first What If things
(I think Riri was handled poorly but tbh I think that's unavoidable with Bendis; the Jessica Jones/Luke Cage relationship started with a joke about how she lets him fuck her in the ass cus she hates herself. ~comics~)

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
It probably doesn't matter much on places that aren't trying to hold to some kind of continuity/cutoff tbh, and if they ARE holding to continuity (in the cutoff sense) then I can't imagine anybody allowing it anyway
But I'll admit I've got kind of a bias against it from seeing a bunch of gender swap chars done really really poorly

And if Wolverine and Hercules can get it on in canon, it's time to just stop worrying about whether an FC has been 'turned gay'. Just consider it an Alt U version and get over it. It's not like there's a ton of gay, lesbian, trans, etc FCs to choose from to begin with.
Yeah probably the only time anybody should give a fuck about fucking is if it's become disruptive to other people for reasons better than "I just don't like it"
I'd say "or if it's literally the only thing they do" but if it's all they do then id think that falls under the category of activity/alt squatting/etc etc anyway

@arkandel said in FCs on Comic MUs:
@Tempest It's absurd to think of FCs as some sort of singular entities whose ways and personalities are well defined.
With some creator-owned exceptions any given character has been written by multiple different writers over the years, so they have acted... inconsistently themselves in their own works. Some of those writers weren't nearly as good as others or had the FCs act in controversial ways to fit the story they were telling at the time, too.
The spirit of the character is what matters. It's hardly as if past a certain point reading more Batman gives you brand new insights into the character, all it gives you is more versions of the FC written by different people.
Yeah, I mean, even just with Illyana Rasputin alone there've been something like... 3-4 pretty radically different versions/personalities/whatever just since she came back to life. It's probably high for one char in a relatively short span of time but it's something ridiculously common for comics as a whole, especially with guys like Bendis who write basically every char in exactly the same way no matter who or what they were before his first issues.
So, like, even on places with canon cutoffs I think there's plenty of room for player interpretation

Reading up on all the comic MU stuff makes me glad I never tried them, honestly it is pretty stunning to me that OCs are so disdained! Since I often like the worlds/themes of a genre or place more than I enjoy endless chaining to source material detail (and yes, I understand from reading wikipedia that comic book FCs probably have ten million ways you can go with any given character since they like to rewrite/mix up/alt universe it up) that I would not wish to offend someone by playing a beloved character "wrong" because I didn't know as much about them as a true fangirl should.
I'm not a huge comics fan (though I love reading about them as well as listening to friends talk about them). But I have gone to a few events for comics fans as the driver/interested companion/for interesting peoplewatching/because I really enjoy people, and I have seen people almost literally froth at the mouth over canon and deviations and stuff.
It seems like if you're not a totally ovaries to the wall fan person, but wanted to try out a new mush experience you never had before, that you'd want to pick either a super obscure (but how would you know if it was?!) or OC character!
I hate so so so much that this is such a prevelant attitude and I hate even more that people have been shitty enough to've made people think this way. It's why I've always had such a crazy hard time getting some of my friends to try comic places. Like I've even had people refuse to risk it even after I flat out said I'd write apps for them.
The single best Freefall and the single best Shadowcat I've ever seen were played by people who basically just knew about those chars rather than having exhaustively read their stuff. Like, the only Gen13 stuff Freefall ever read was Magical Drama Queen and a single story thing I put on imgur for her, and only AFTER she'd been totally killing it as Roxy for like three months.

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
Okay so reading that back I'm pretty sure all of it can strip down to "I think villains whose powers, personalities and motivations let them actually socialize in non-predatory ways outside of evil lairs aren't bad"

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
@the-tree-of-woe said in FCs on Comic MUs:
I would honestly say, myself, MOST villains are not suitable as PCs. PCs should probably fall into the realm of protagonists.
I think it depends on the villain and there are definitely some who shouldn't be played but I wouldn't say MOST
There are some, like... Carnage, Zasz, Empath, Dr Light, where it's just like - I mean a) I don't think they're gonna contribute much and b) it throws a TON of red flags up for me when somebody wants a char like that
And I definitely think some of the plot villains shouldn't be open, like, Sinister and Doom (unless you're doing like an ultra specific Future Foundation era game) and Apocalyse and people on that level, people who when they show up at all generally it's gonna be a really big deal. (Edit / MAYBE on a limited basis where you're "playing" then as part of a plot?) Definitely not guys like Dormammu or Thanos or Darkseid who're just massive cosmic threats
But, like, The Thunderbolts? Most of Flash's bad guys? Most of Spider-Man's bad guys? I think those can be totally valid player chars who contribute to stuff and won't just totally throw off the theme by being around way too much

okay wtf is a potpourri game
Sorry
I guess the preferred nomenclature is "crossover" but, like... to ME, personally, that'd be something like "Marvel/DC," or "Marvel/Wildstorm," or whatever - and some places are "Marvel/DC/Archie/this cartoon I liked as a kid + now this TV show I saw last night and liked and now it's a new part of the theme" so "potpourri" sounded better in my head

I can see how people may believe there to be a massive discussion about timelines on other games. I mean, it seems that there's an awful lot of discussion of this nature for a game like UH, for example, but I'd like to hear it from those players.
The problems I've had and the arguments I've seen figuring out wtf is going on/has happened/exists/how anything reconciles together/whatever have really all been on potpourri games but from what everybody's said I don't think my experience is a standard one
