    • RE: The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc

@Ganymede I guess it depends on how the policy is set up. For the previously-mentioned Transformers game I once staffed on, the policy re: sexual themes was pretty clearly a matter of public acknowledgment. It was very much a "we don't police your stuff behind closed doors so long as you don't try to bring it out from behind those doors." Similarly, Arx's rule file regarding prohibited themes calls out that they're not interested in policing private RP that's kept private, but that they wouldn't be allowing storylines on those themes to be brought into the public sphere, other people's RP, or the game canon. Incest got added to that list of prohibited themes within the past year mostly because it was deemed to never be fun for players put in the position of having to be IC authority figures for these PCs who were engaging in a very big cultural taboo.

Do I think this means that private RP with incest themes has disappeared from Arx? 100% no. If a game just doesn't want certain themes brought out where anyone but the engaging parties can see them, does it at all matter if people are doing side things on Discord? Nah.

      @mietze said in Staff’s Job?:

@Roz yep. I do love it when wiz staff has very clear and concise expectations that are shared when they're looking to hire though. Always a major major plus when I see that!

Yeah, absolutely. I was moreso objecting to the idea that, because someone is not volunteering for the specific staff role you're looking for, it means they're not interested in helping the game and/or they were interested in it for the sake of power or something. (I mean, the individuals may very well have been! Idk these people. Just that not being up for being a story-focused staffer doesn't mean you're not up for contributing.)

@auspice FOR THE RECORD, what you currently make is not the business of anyone but you and your employer. What you're looking to make is already the acceptable answer for that. 😉

(I'm glad your mishearing worked out in your favor.)

@Pandora In the sense that they'd keep their original land and any newly conquered land would be settled as a new vassal of theirs, yeah.

@faraday said in Firefly - Still Flyin':

You just have to weigh whether the "last resort" kind of situation you're describing is worth establishing a policy that's going to chase good people away.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, @faraday and the thought occured to me as well that we'd also invade the other player's privacy in this case.

To be entirely honest here, I personally hadn't expected that this bit of policy would stir so much feeling, because it's been pretty much a given on every mush I've been on that staff might lurk "dark" in scenes. I've only ever RP'ed wth that thought in my mind and would only ever talk about staff in pages or through channels away from the mush. So when we wrote the policy, it just seemed... a normal staff thing to do (and say). But if people think that the line would make people uncomfortable and even chase good players away, I wouldn't mind removing it from the policy.

I think the policy is best left as being something left unspoken. At this point in the hobby, which has been around forever, I think pretty much everyone knows that it is a possibility that one's RP/OOC interactions/etc might be monitored by staff under certain situations. Stating that outright makes people who have had bad experiences, heard bad stories, or whatnot, anxious and less inclined to play on a game, as been evidenced in this thread.

There's a lot of things that people think "pretty much everyone knows," but I think that's kind of bad to assume. I've seen plenty of newcomers to the hobby continually over my time in it. There are always people entering the hobby and tripping over all of our community assumptions that we take for granted.

I have only played 5e but I've now played it with a wide mix of experience levels and all of the beginners (including me) seem to be on the same page about how accessible it is to learn. I really love it.

He has stalked the RL-facing social media of game runners on at least one occasion after he was banned from the game, IIRC. (Along with, of course, his targets of harassment.)

It's literally impossible to state all of those statistics are rooted entirely in nature when they also can't be removed from their cultures. Like, there are also lots of cultural reasons why men take more risks.

    • RE: Preference for IC Time On A Modern(ish) Game

Doing something slower than 1:1 seems like it'd be really rough for character progression and growth and whatnot. I can do faster than 1:1 -- there are some settings that a faster timescale suits -- but I think slower would be a real slog.

Anxiety and panic attacks. I'm not sure 'peeve' is a strong enough word. Maybe the peeve is when people say 'oh just do X (think positively, ignore it, meditate, exercise, take meds, etc)' to get over it. OMG I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT in the 3 years I've been dealing with it! Thank you for your brilliant observation and critique about how to fix my mental issues, and for your dismissive, superior attitude.

I know how to fix anxiety issues! Just stop being so anxious!

What I would like to see is a MUSH based on the same world as Guy Gavriel Kay's Lions of Al-Rasan, A Song for Arbonne, etc. It's close enough to some themes in our world's medieval era to make it easy to play, extremely low-magic and very engaging, if you ever read either of those books.

@Pacha I don't think you're being at all combative! I totally get your point regarding the value of undeniable diversity and the message that sends to players. And having a few examples of it among a roster the size of Arx's doesn't contradict your overall point.
