Actually, easier than explaining: an example.

The hunter conspiracies do not exist on BITN. There are 'cooperatives' instead, listed on the faction page. They're set up similarly to Mystery Cults, with a few tweaks.

It's mortal only, with select supernatural merits allowed. The only + types would be psychics; the + minor template types aren't in play. No wolfblooded, no ghouls, etc. are in play, as their supernatural counterparts have been completely replaced by custom creatures.

It might be worth taking a peek at the series 'The 100' for this. Since it's longer than a film, it delves a bit more deeply into some of the factors in play in a post-apocalyptic society sort of setting.

@mietze and @lordbelh absolutely nail it for me, too. That is, IMHO, the most healthy example of how I feel things 'should' be, too.

I'll ask sometimes if I see a group at a public location if they wouldn't mind one more -- but usually this is when it's a case of 'huge group, might already be very unwieldy', or 'two people present, they may want a private moment'. I don't feel obligated to do so, but I tend to anyway in those circumstances, just in case.

I always figure it never hurts to be polite from any position in that situation, but I don't expect others to do the same. It's appreciated if they do, since I take it as a sign of politeness and respect for fellow players, but I don't consider NOT asking in advance to be a sign of the absence of those things at all. It's something I think of as an extra bit, not something I feel should ever be considered an obligation.

Wasnt reno working on something like this.... might be worth looking into. I wonder who their system worked!

      If so, it's fairly recent.

There were discussions about it in my time but nothing was ever implemented there in that period. People just added notes on the wiki to their pack or coterie's page; nothing was mentioned in room descs unless someone added a +note to the property they owned (their player build, not the grid rooms).

It is also worth mention that if you're going to require Pueblo, it has very limited support. (In fact, it's now so old that the help files in TinyMUX for it lead to nothing, and you have to hunt down the current new owners/maintainers of the software.) It's windows-only, for one, which cuts out all the mac users, and there are more than a few of us around. I don't know how well it's supported on tablets and mobile, either -- both of which are very popular with players.

There are ways of integrating the MUX and wiki through SQL to accomplish some things, but unfortunately I don't know enough about that aspect to offer much in the way of advice there, and can't even tell you what's realistically possible (or not) in terms of that integration. Chime would have the best answers there; she's the integration goddess.

It would be an interesting thing with absolutely none of the WoD-type elements, even. Just use the system since a lot of folks know it, and it has systems for scheming.

Actually... a game using the mortal-only/non-supernatural CofD mechanics, including all of the social maneuvering rules, could be amusingly ideal for this.

A game set around a campaign between two fictional candidates (or several fictional candidates, winnowing down to an eventual two), and the maneuvering amongst their staff and supporters to get them elected, could be fascinating.

It could be run for X amount of time until the final election, then skip ahead X amount of time to the runup to the next, and so on, as various games have discussed in the past as an option.

    • RE: Someone make a damn CofD/Storytelling 2 game worth playing, kthx

WtF is doing that, too, for rites. Like, this is actually intentional.

@OP, Making Our Lives Hell said:

The dice pool used to perform a rite depends on how the ritemaster and participants incorporate the required symbols. The dice pool consists of Attribute + Skill. A pack whose performance is a frenzied song and dance would use Dexterity + Expression; a rite of clattering talismans and whispered eldritch invocations to command a spirit instead uses Presence + Occult. Packs gravitate towards ritual per- formances that play to their strengths, and it is up to the Storyteller and players to agree on the appropriate dice pool for a specific ritual performance.

@Cobaltasaurus Yeah, volunteer-only seems to be the intent here, much like the playlists on MSB or some of the old livejournal or FB groups that people post the info themselves. It's not a new idea by a mile, it's just a different implementation of it.

Broadly speaking -- and this is a case of 'oh god, scope creep!' that makes me cringe even as I mention it -- it may be a good idea to have a field for game type. As in, don't limit it to MUSH/MUX. Open up to MUDs, play by email, play by post, etc.

Why? Well, a lot of players here have multi-venue overlaps like that. It might be a good way to show some folks here some viable alternatives if there's nothing that's grabbing them at the moment in their favored medium. If there are some folks they already know who they could get in touch with to help them get started, this is a big plus. Along the same lines, this could maybe draw some people from the IRC/play by post/etc. crowd over to MUSH/MUX, which I've seen happen. The mention of the reincarnated writers game on livejournal, elsethread, comes to mind; a lot of folks here may never realize how many people they run into in another RP type are actually the same players, too, simply because 'it's a different RP medium'.

I can probably mod the 'seeking' template from BITN for the 'looking for person' lists. (It's used for wanted concepts/wanted scenes, take a peek over there for an example.)

    • RE: Player Database Wiki

It could be set up pretty easily with the Name@Game_(Player) without the need for disambigs, actually. I try to avoid them any time it's at all possible, because they become a major headache to manage.

The lists can be generated from almost any property in the template, so you can have a player page that looks like:

Game • Character (Character's Full Name)
Game • Character (Character's Full Name)
Game • Character (Character's Full Name)
Game • Character (Character's Full Name)
Game • Character (Character's Full Name)
      etc.

...and a game page that has a list more like:

Character • (Character's Full Name, Player User Page Link)
Character • (Character's Full Name, Player User Page Link)
Character • (Character's Full Name, Player User Page Link)
Character • (Character's Full Name, Player User Page Link)
Character • (Character's Full Name, Player User Page Link)

      ...etc.

Then just have a page listing of all the user pages, a page listing of all the game pages, pretty much.

You could make a full index of all the character pages pretty easily, just by having DPL spit out a list of them in alphabetical order on a giant browse-me sort of index, which would get hairy if you went multi-step with the disambigs.

Keeping the player name as a third part to the title really, really saves a mountain of time and effort long-term when it comes to maintenance; with it in there, there's more or less no real maintenance that would be necessary after it's set up, which is the main plus of keeping all three segments in the page name and avoiding the disambig pages.

It would be pretty easy to use:

      AltName@GameName,_(PlayerUserName)

All are legal characters for naming, and it should cover all the bases while looking Non-Awful.

I agree that Name@Game is the most likely way people would be looking stuff up, so aiming there is the best route.

You also could arguably use the user pages to store the list of things someone has played, too, as the 'player page', unless people want to contribute playlists for people not themselves (which I strongly recommend against).

Also, it means an extra layer of logins on a place that people may use for other, non-hobby related things.

Which gets sticky if someone is also active on wikidot for something not related to this hobby. There are just enough stalker issues that this could create more problems than it solves, unfortunately.

    • RE: Player Database Wiki

You could, potentially, have the character/alt page named like the above, with something as simple as:

      (paged named per above)
      {{Alt
      |name=Login Name
      |fullname=Character's Full Name on the game (helpful to disambig and for DPL lists)
      |playerid=surreality
      |game=Game Name
      |wikilink=Link to charpage on the original game's wiki, if it exists (because neat, also to help disambig)
      |notes=whatever
      }}

      For player pages:
      {{Player
      |name=name
      |notes=whatever
      }}
(Then DPL to draw all the alt pages into the list that reference that player, each alt ID'd by and linking to the page for the game as well.)

      For game pages:
      {{Game
      |name=game's name
      |notes=whatever
      }}
(Then DPL to draw all the alt pages into the list that reference that game, each alt linking to the player.)
