I'm thankful for my dog, Logan. It might sound funny to some, but that dog has literally kept me alive more than once, by detecting sugar crashes or spikes. He also very on top of my emotional state, and will all but tackle me when I get upset, to distract me and offer comfort.

I'm thankful for one of my best friends, who is trying to help me keep my car from being repossessed. Thankful to another who ordered me pizza when I hadn't eaten and was so depressed I didn't have the energy to cook.

I'm thankful for my online friends, a lot of them through MU*, but also through League of legends - for making me laugh, making me play, and insisting I'm wanted when the real world is burying me alive.

I am going to temporarily lock this topic until there's time to discuss with other admins. I agree that this does not fit with "constructive" part of the forum and it's also starting to involve RL information disclosed /about third parties/ as well. No names have been mentioned so I do not think it breaks any letter of the rules here, but I would really urge consideration of editing out that information (and it may happen anyway) by the original posters.

@too-old-for-this My dad was also never home for YEARS after my mother passed (I was 4 when she passed), I honestly think if she'd lived, even just a handful more years, I would have been far better off, in so many ways.

But, as a female, they just wrote me off as lazy when I was a shining star in class, and never did the homework.

I seriously wonder if going back to college classes now on Adderall would be different.

ETA: Stupid spelling mistakes in the wee hours.

I'm late to this comment - sorry.
I was like a 2.5 gpa high school student. I never turned in my daily work because I'd forget. I tested off the charts. I was intelligent, I was just bored.

In college I found things I adored doing and other classes that I had to force focus, but I was a 4.0 college student. I have full faith if you want to go back, you'd be a rockstar at it. With the added help of medicine to help you think and concentrate better, even more. So good vibes to you if you are going back.

@ghost said in Bad Actors, and Bad Behavior (extended):

If we're going to define, or discuss "BAD" behavior by players, and if it's defined by very specific things such as sexual harassment, stalking, doxxing, etc, then I think we should take a moment to acknowledge the amount of hell some people have gone through on these boards for things like:

Some things are fairly universal. Those are the only ones we can really address in a generic post - sexual harassment for example is a pretty damn good bet for what constitutes a no-no.

Everything else depends on each game's staff. Maybe I am more SJW than some and would ban you for calling someone a bitch; maybe you are a real elitist and would condone someone being derided for too many typos in their posing. But we can't possibly apply any rhyme or reason to such things, as they are just too game-specific.

Never tried that, @Bobotron. I just know Duck installs on a Chromebook as a discrete app, so you have a window that feels like a full program, even though it isn't -- I'd find it weird to MUSH from even a standalone browser window with a tab and what have you, but Duck doesn't have that feeling.

Duck does install on Chrome itself, FYI. I've done this to help people troubleshoot Duck on various MU*s.

So you can use Duck on whatever OS you want. 🙂

Duck has issues with some ports and not others, or maybe my job is weird with it, I have no idea. Sometimes DuckClient works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it works with one game and not another. It's really confusing, lol.

Yeah, it's a finicky beast. I've encountered times when it will be doing something on a game (I think one time someone couldn't send semi-colons of all things) and I can't even reproduce the issue to try to help the person in question, even after duplicating all their settings.

me: I can't what? Expect them to do the BARE minimum of what the law demands? Expect to be allowed to treat sugar crashes or be able to take insulin before I eat?

@surreality said in Questionably viable character types and tropes (tangent from staff ethics convo):

@tinuviel I don't know if the thread has just come full circle here (re: some concepts don't work well in this medium and should potentially be restricted), or if we just agree or disagree really strongly.

Let's say I have a scene posted for 'it's a normal day at the diner when two thugs show up and try to rob the joint', and Giles, the sniper, the seamstress, and let's say someone specializing in playing guitar, and another who is a crime scene tech are the ones who sign on to show up.

Are you suggesting that each of these characters should reasonably have a chance to demonstrate their primary concept skill in this scene or someone is a failure as an ST? (Sniping, occult research, tailoring, playing guitar, and investigating a crime that hasn't yet occurred?)

I could fit everyone but the sniper into this scene. Have you seen the Story of Ricky? There's a guy that murders with knitting needles. BAM. Have you seen 80s wrestling? The honkey tonk man used a guitar to great effect in combat. Occult Research, well, the thugs likely have tattoos.. or something...

You're probably right, I just wanted to picture that guy from Ricky-Oh and the Honky Tonk man teaming up in a buddy cop movie.

@gangofdolls I think you pretty much should always do it, and if you have doubts about whether you should just say, 'Hey I don't wanna make a big deal about this, and I'm not sure this is actionable, but this happened so you know just in case it points to a larger pattern'. It can be decisive if there was larger issues and even something you had that seemed minor was indicative of a larger, worse pattern of behavior.

      Ask if you can.

If you can't, ask someone else who has if they did. If they did, it's almost certainly okay.

      Credit if you know.

If there is a license, follow it.

      Credit changes in the credits.

But ultimately, if it feels wrong, don't do it.

      --

edit: Unless the code is noted otherwise, anyone can have any code I've ever touched. Even if we don't get along, I don't care. It's code, not part of my identity, and I'd rather games be enjoyable for those who run and play it than someone massaging my ego.

Actually that's a trick, my code helping anyone enjoy a game massages my ego. I'm honored by anyone who wants to use it.

@Ominous I'm just going to say we definitely share a brain on this one, 100%. I refer to the 'elevator pitch' front page as a 'mission statement' -- and I wish like hell more games would do this. (I point to Reno1 still as one of the better examples of this I've seen.)

      @surreality I'm familiar
with those sorts of tricks. I've used them before. I believe that's still not the ideal way to display the info in either format and also that it's wholly unnecessary since - as @Tat says - the majority of players don't even notice or care about the lack of in game info. But if it works for you and you're happy with it, doesn't matter what I think.

No drama flounce or horror show; just heading out to road trip ville for a week+ish.

This is more or less a warning that while I may check in some, expect even shittier typing and brief responses to things. If you have some long question or something you want me to check in on, it's gonna have to wait, though. Same with any wiki inquiries.

@HelloProject I am stupid keen on people being able to add 'I had a neat idea!' project areas to the grid. Doesn't have to be their business or something they maintain. Just 'I had a neat idea for a business I'd like to build where my character just hangs out sometimes' or 'it would be neat if there was a secret cave in <place>!' if they want to do it.

I think it would be very cool if people did build things like the business example to list on the wiki for people to 'claim' and so on; 'keep and run it', 'donate to game-owned grid', 'make claimable' as options, essentially. Would be neat. I know I've had, and known plenty of people who have had, highly cool ideas for businesses or areas of a grid that would be unique and interesting, but they don't feel like jumping through the hoops to make a character to run it (especially if they'd just want to be a customer there, or have a place they don't own but where they hang out, etc.) or meeting whatever the IC financial standards are for the build, etc.

Temp rooms get used for this kind of thing a lot, which is handy, sure, but sometimes the locations described would be quite useful or cool, and I'd love to see as permanent additions to the grid. Provided your core of grid rooms is sane, I really see very little harm in this. I 'grew up on' sprawling, immense grids, and always found them interesting. So long as sensible navigation is possible, people adding a park or a cave or a strange hidden garden or a secluded beach or whatever is something I think should be encouraged.
