    • RE: What do you eat?

My body responds better to meat, veggies, fruit, and dairy than it does to anything else. The fresher the better.

I would have no issue giving lab-grown meat a try, with some concern it 'might not work'. A number of 'replacement foods' are so much further divorced from nature than what they're replacing, and somehow, my body seems to recognize the difference and rebel in ways that make me marvel at how many ways your innards can hate the shit out of you (sometimes literally).

I can't do artificial sweeteners, for instance, even naturally derived ones. A few sips of diet soda is a recipe for a vicious headache that will last for several hours. I'd rather go without sugar -- seltzer, black coffee, etc. -- than use a sweetener that isn't sugar. (I don't actually use much sugar, either, and get minimally processed kinds or beverages with cane sugar if I'm going to have them in the house at all.)

Meanwhile, I can eat a pound of bacon a day for a week and I will lose weight, because apparently I am one of those alien experiments that didn't work quite as intended, unless my model of human was bred to make money for Dr. Atkins.

    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

My birthday has almost universally been the same weekend as a show we used to do selling jewelry, since I was about... 12? So it was never 'my birthday weekend' (we could never have done anything during the week because my folks' schedules were crazy, as was mine), it was 'the weekend we do <show>'.

Then, my mother's craptastic displays (that she refused to replace no matter how much I insisted we had to) got us kicked from that show a handful of years back.

Now, that weekend is 'the weekend we used to do <show>'. Thanks, Mom. Your priorities make me feel so special.

Feels, yep. ❤ to all y'all.

@Quinn You may have already, but have you tried paint pens? I find them to be annoying as fuck-all and it's not always easy to find good colors unless you order them from amazon or something, but they tend to work for me on things that do not want to be written on otherwise. Most are sharpie permanent, opaque, and from my usage I can attest they've held up to some impressive punishment. Downside: hard to find fine points of any kind. Would potentially be worth trying a cheap one from home depot or staples before getting a set.

    • RE: Incentives for RP

@Sparks I don't think they had voting for XP (at least in 97 when I played there iirc). It was pure 'slog through bashing on AHaBs in Nirvana. (AHaB: 'Almost Human Bastard', the automated critters MOO Quinn (not to be confused with forum Quinn) made, before anyone thinks this is some kind of weird insult to someone somehow.)

They did have voting for city mayor every so often, which... is a totally different ball of hilarious crazy.

@Arkandel Yup, that's the one. Sadly, she got out of the hobby shortly after due to general life changes, from what I recall -- buuuuuuuut, her everything took off like a rocket. I'm stupidly happy for her.

I got my 'almost murdered' out of the way early. Amazing how much that frees up the schedule.

@Ghost I keep telling y'all, my life is weirder than fiction. Especially weird when you consider I don't... actually do much at all, let alone anything that'd normally bring such circumstances about.

@Ghost More amusingly, a friend of mine from MUing, about... 12 years ago? Got a cruise for two as part of a thank you from the company where she'd done some consulting.

I was the only good friend she knew who would appreciate the relevant culture, had zero set schedule whatsoever, and a complete comprehension of what the sock on the door meant (in a manner of speaking).

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd that's how I actually did get the quadruple luxury venti frappucino suite package for free. We had a personal suite butler, y'all, and they had a veritable fleet of superauto espresso machines in the lobby.

...and yes, I did in fact watch Deep Rising immediately before departing for the airport, on principle. #TeamJoey

@Pandora I feel you on this, and... WTF.

I try to like lamb, I do try. I just don't. I've had really good lamb and really bad lamb and have come to the conclusion that I just do not like lamb, Sam I Am. Even at the Brazilian steakhouse, where food is lucky to even make it to the plate before it disappears, it's a <choke-choke-choke> Nope <gulllllllllllllllp>.

ETA: It's like it tastes like it's angry at you for eating it. Which I can't fault, but that isn't tasty.

Now I'm subtly terrified to know what the kebab was, because I gather I envision it being the same thing you did, @Pandora: a skewer of grilled meat with some kind of veggies, usually peppers and onions, maybe with some kind of marinade.

Above all, I am spectacularly baffled as to how someone could manage to fuck that up, or overcomplicate it into a horror.

      I must know now!

    • RE: Disabilities and Mental Illness as Character Traits

@Ghost I agree 100% with the point of the post.

THAT SAID, there is a game design stupid there, too, in not having a reasonable continuum of options there in many cases. WoD being a prime example. There's not really 'everybody is a blur without your glasses and forget becoming a sniper' (which is a notable impediment in the game world) or similar options, there's only 'totally normal vision' or 'LIGHT ALL THE WAY OUT'.

I try not to quibble too hard about lack of realism, but that's a fairly substantial design issue.

In some instances you can probably do something where you have an equipment item that helps ameliorate the penalty somewhat in WoD. However, you gotta be prepared to lose that thing and deal with the full penalty. (Ex: a hit to the head knocks the implants offline or similar.)

ETA: I think the lack of these reasonable levels in the middle is where some of the less bad-intentioned 'ignore it' conditionals may stem from. Essentially, the system doesn't recognize what they're trying to do.

@Rinel That is the kindest check on my bullshit ever. Thank you.

In that same spirit, pfft. There's an old saw about taking one's own advice. 😉
