If you like games of trading, similar to Tradewinds or Port Royale

Games where you can build really satisfying production lines

Games with beautiful stories and a truly whimsical world

Then I cannot recommend Merchant of the Skies enough. I've played the campaign mode twice from start to finish in the last couple of weeks, which isn't common for me.

Instant mash made up according to instructions, microwaved baked beans, grated cheddar.

Food of kings when you can't make real food.

      Science.

      Specifically, the discovery of cryovolcanoes.

      So cool.

      Oh, man. That IS cool.
And what's cooler than being cool? Ice cold. 😄

    • RE: Tell me what you want -- work edition

I have the good fortune to have a good manager at my job.

The main thing he does, which other managers don't seem to, is he's proactive about asking if I have any problems or concerns.

Your 'traditional' manager will assume if there's a problem, you will tell them. His assumption is that we'll try to handle everything ourselves, and maybe not tell him or tell him too late for him to support.

So, be proactive in asking your team if there are any issues, problems, concerns - and don't just relate it to work stuff. Sometimes just knowing about it is enough, but if you can support, so much the better.

We should get our writing staff in a room and hand the result to the Coen brothers.

Or Luc Besson. It would still make zero sense but it would be PRETTY nonsense.

I think there's a perception (rightly or wrongly) that someone who does this is 'making it all about them'.
I don't agree, but I think that's where the notion of not doing it came from.

      @wizz Oh I feel that.

Shit flows downhill. We have considerable technical debt to pay back at my job and there are never opportunities to dedicate resources to do so since offering new features is what gets more customers, not fixing stuff that isn't broken enough.

But here's the thing, the more technical debt you accumulate the harder it is for their services to scale up. That means as you add customers it gets harder to maintain them. It also means stuff needs to be done manually - which directly translates to people getting phone calls at 2am to fix stuff which, if they had time from the daily grind, would either be automatically resolved or wouldn't be broken in the first place.

Is this my job you're describing right now? Ugh. Technical debt 😐

I sympathise with you so much on this.

    • RE: Random funny

Possibly that the original Good Omens was written by Sir Terry Pratchett as well as Neil Gaiman, and now that wonderful partnership is no longer possible, to produce the sequal in any form?

IDK, that was my first assumption when I read it.

    • RE: Goofy things one does in down time.

I watch a lot of videos of people making things. Typically:

      • Tiny versions of big things (like for a doll's house), out of polymer clay
      • Jewellery, either with wire wrapping or sometimes resin pours
      • Cake decorating (which, weirdly, never makes me want to eat the cake)

It gives me an odd sense of satisfaction, even though I'm not the one making the thing. Just appreciating how skilled some people are I guess!

    • RE: The Wheel of Time

Finally have caught up to Episode 5 and thus been able to read this without being spoilered!

I am a long-time fan of the books, and I agree with a lot of what is said above, particularly about Perrin's wife. Though, most of the "hammer vs axe" stuff was his own inner dialogue in the books, so I can sort-of understand the need to externalise it.

The thing I've found most about the series though, is it's teaching me all the wrong ways I've been saying words in my head! Like the mention of Birgitte with the girl's doll, in my head that's been more of a 'birrzhitte' rather than 'bir-gi-ta'. That kind of thing. It's fun 😄

Yay, Spreadsheets the Board Game. My personal favourite is 1861, because the winner is the first to be lined up and shot by the Russian Gov't. 😄

    • RE: Who are you?

      Uh, okay.

      • I like pineapple on pizza. I accept that some people don't.
      • I like cats, I love dogs, I have neither. Sadly working full time means having a pet would be irresponsible.
      • I can cook pretty much anything given a decent recipe and some time to experiment. I also enjoy freestyle 'let's see what we can make with this' cooking.
      • I can bake absolutely nothing. No, not even box cake. It just doesn't work.
      • I have a job with co-workers that I like and a supportive manager. Even so, I have impostor syndrome.
      • I have peanut intolerance, which is much easier than dealing with a peanut allergy.
      • I have no practical/survival skills that would make me valuable in the event of an apocalypse of some kind (other than, maybe, cooking).
      • I worry about the above more than I should.
      • I also spend far too much time imagining how I would earn my keep if I were transported back in time to various periods/countries.
      • I am asexual and aromantic, and get really annoyed by love songs. But in contrast I do enjoy reading romance books.

      There.

    • RE: Crimson Dynasties -- A Vampire: The Requiem 2e MUSH set in modern Beijing

Might be interesting to note for those who care - this is built in Ares, and if I'm interpreting their chargen page right, it's got coded sheets.

Obligatory 'I am nothing to do with this game, this is just my take' statement.

As a side note given that this is being set during the Aiel War and the times of the Grand Alliance, there will be plenty for a Grey sister to do. 🙂

I'd suggest a homebrew area; some newly discovered island the whole Thean continent is rushing to stake a claim to/develop for financial opportunities/escape the continent to/explore for Syrne ruins/whatever. Preferably an uninhabitated chain of isladnds so we could avoid the touchy subject of colonization.

We did exactly this for a 7th Sea LARP and it worked very well 😄
