What makes it funnier though is that I'm pretty sure you are younger than I am.
Shaddap.
-
@Ganymede Our first characters would be old enough to drink and vote now.
(Cue someone thinking those are some of the phantom legion of votes in 5... 4... 3... 2... )

This month officially makes 21 years. And I know some folks are older at this than me around here, which is scary.
24 for me.
-
@Paris Ditto. May of 1993 for me!
-
September 1994 for me. Though maybe it should be pushed to 1995. I spent times largely on MOOs at first.
-
@mietze I'm counting MOOs, too. My first year was MOOs, Ghostwheel and Cybersphere.
-
Don't actually remember the month or anything of when I started. I also transitioned over kind of steathily. Honestly, I don't remember the year either. Decade and change ago, at least. That time in my life was very amorphous and I don't remember many details...
-
I started in 1992. Medievia IV.
Although I didn't really get into MUDs until maybe a year or so after that once I discovered Wheel of Time roleplaying was actually a thing you could do online, which blew my mind at the time. Whaaaat?
-
I might already be over 20 years if I count.. Gemstone I think it was? used to be playable on AOL.
I remember the month and year because I was introduced to the idea of a MUD at Boy Scout camp the summer between 7th and 8th grade.

I mean, for MUs.
I started roleplaying online in general (on MSN chats with the likes of @lordbelh) when I was 17, in 2000. So seventeen years of that.
-
@surreality I can't believe Cybersphere is still around after all this time. Sindome, too.
-
I started MU*ing in 1996. I remember it well!
-
980AD for me here.
-
It would be kinda fun to make a timeline post, somehow, somewhere, and let people post their start year.
Maybe a poll with a bajillion options.

You know what would be interesting to me? If we can somehow figure out when people drop off or came back, not when they started playing. I wonder if that's just a very random, individual thing ("I stopped playing when I had to move iRL, then started again when Bob contacted me over e-mail a year later") or if there are actual trends that have to do with MU* opening/going into decline, other major games launching to 'steal' players, etc.
-
@Arkandel The 'wave' around me when I started was mostly people playing from college.
Not everyone actually had a computer in the house in the mid-90s, and could only ever play from the school's computer lab, which is a completely alien reality for a lot of people today.
Many, once they graduated, never turned up again. By the time they could get a computer on a fresh grad salary with loans to pay back and their new adult rent/mortgage, who had the time or even really cared any more (in their cases)?
-
I can't really recall my first year of MU*ing because I was somewhere between the ages of 8-10 (so like somewhere around 1995-1997) . I think I played pretty consistently until 2002/2003ish, then dropped off for the latter end of high school and all of college. Came back at the end of college in 2009 and have been regularly on games ever since.

Omg, you guys have /derailed/ my /totally useful/ forum factions thread into reminiscing. I have downvoted you all in my heart.

I lied earlier when I said I wouldn't want to be in any faction that would have me.
If you make a derailing faction I'll be its king, and rule it with an iron fist.

I dunno, man, that post was pretty on-topic.
