I still dislike the change to klingons, but if you can get past that, Discovery was actually very well done imho. Enjoyed it.
As in, it's the kind of stylistic choice that seems to pick them up out of the 'barbarians with an honor code' sort of feel, which is how the old version used to seem to me, to something more akin to samurai composing battle poetry in their heads and so on. Which is neat, sure, but it is a big change and more importantly, it's not necessarily one I'm convinced they intended.
@surreality Klingons from ST:tOS were modeled just after the ancient Mongolians. It showed in their skin tone, style of hair and facial hair, attitude, even costumes and accents to some extent... right down to that little round 'hat' on the prow/bridge of all their ships. The Klingons of ST:tNG got Viking trader and imperialism added on with art and music and western-friendly religious sentiments, but a lot of it was less "the actual culture of the ancient Northmen" than "the way Vikings are presented in Wagner's operas" such as "Ring Cycle" and "The Valkyries." That's where you get the opera and the battle poetry etc.
I also loved the whole Stargate catalog except SG1 after it turned into Farscape SG1, I never liked Atlantis, and maybe I could have done without a few episodes of Universe where it turned into a big soap opera in space. I'd love to see new material.
Recently got back into Babylon 5, which is some of the best sci fi ever made.

Star Wars: Rebels.
All of it has been superb, but tonight's episodes, Jedi Night and Dume, were just... damn.

So since I'm on an upswing and want to stay on an upswing, I need recommendations for TV shows that are not complete fucking downers (I'm looking at you here, Black Mirror) that already have several episodes -- or preferably at least a season -- out.
Said recommendation doesn't need to be all happy sunshine and bunnies that doesn't touch on serious things ever, given that one of my favorite shows right now is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but it definitely needs bits of fun and humor to drag me out of noir sci-fi dystopia land for awhile.

Futureman. It's cheesy and stupid and I love it. It's basically made for gamer nerds and folks that grew up int he 80's. Some time travel, touches of last Starfighter. I found it entertaining and I binged it all. Waiting on season 2.

@aria Parks & Rec and The Good Place are the first that comes to mind for upswings. Yuri on Ice!
-
@aria No joke. Black Mirror; an excellent show if you really want to give up on living, period.
(No, really, it's very good, but it is good in such a way that I cannot think of anything that could possibly be worse for anyone with depression to watch than this, ever. They should tagline that shit, "Black Mirror: When you're looking for that final push to give in to that suicidal impulse.")

No joke on The Good Place. There is not a single episode that I should not positive. I haven’t felt this hopeful for characters since Pushing Daisies.
Pushing Daisies is another great suggestion!

So I started The Good Place last night and am now halfway through the first season. Kudos!
Also, @surreality? Jesus Christ yes, on the Black Mirror. I made it to the "Hang the DJ" episode, which is a pretty positive one, and was like, "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, I'mma just pretend the series ended here. Later, bitches!"

Post your reaction to The Good Place finale. It's my current Best Thing and the second season's even better, tho not all up anywhere expect On Demand right now.

The Good Place is awesome. It is amazing that someone in TV Land was allowed to create a show that ended the way the first season ended and then run as the second season ran. It is so 'unsafe' compared to most other shows, but that is exactly part of what makes it so great. It isn't Big Bang Theory where 10 seasons later the big change is that Sheldon lives across the hall from the apartment he started in.
-
It keeps messing with me that one of the main characters is a college professor born in Nigeria named Chidi, given that one of my most recent professors was born in Nigeria.... and named Chiji.

It's too soon. It's too soon to talk about Pushing Daisies. I'm still too upset about it being canceled.
When they canceled the show, there was still a few episodes. They ended up showing them (I think in the summer that year) but I went to the Pushing Daisies panel at PaleyFest where they showed the remaining episodes. Before they showed the episodes, the panel discussion with the actors was absolutely heart-breaking because it was really clear that they loved working together, they loved the show and they were all really upset that the show was canceled.
Olive cries as Digby, the Golden Retriever, comforts her by licking her face.
Narrator: While Olive considered how much she loved Digby for paying attention to her while the Pie Maker would not, and Digby considered how much he liked salt.. -

Man, that show blew me away. I was not expecting The Good Place to actually be good. I thought it was more of the fluffy sitcoms that channel shows at best.
That GIF though sums up the show perfectly.

If you have Amazon Prime, take a moment to try out Brittannia. It's not anything resembling historically accurate in terms of how the world works, but the production values, the acting, and the story are excellent.

Enjoying Bosch quite a bit.
