Auspice Needs To Move!

I would help if I could, but, I have about 4 weeks to find a source of income for myself before I run out of available cash. I wish you all the luck though and well wishes.

This is who I work for. Most people start at just $9-10/hr, which isn't much and getting a full 40hrs a week right out the gate is tough. But it's often flexible work and from home. I know people who moved into decent positions within 3 months. Took me a lot longer, but I also began with the company 6 years ago when it was much smaller.

I missed the other thread. I read GoFundMe. I'm just idly curious, why Austin?
Also, if you haven't already rented a moving truck, and you have a vehicle of your own, the "pod" delivery/moving companies are a pretty great deal, and pretty easy. Not Pods itself (the company), but other companies offer it. Was way, way cheaper when I moved cross country. Easier, too, not having to drive the truck yourself.

I have no car, so a truck is the best option for me.
And Austin is good because it's a tech center without the insane bloat that Seattle, San Fran, etc. has. Cost of living is still low while the jobs are steadily building up. It's also a good place for artistic types (finishing up my writing degree with a growing portfolio and all). At this stage, it seems the best place for me to hit up since Seattle has been strike out after strike out for the past two years re: jobs. I've had one single good job lead and that's with constant effort.
-
@Auspice Makes sense. I hope everything goes wonderfully!
-
@Auspice Good luck, and I'm sorry that Seattle didn't work out. I love the region, but the cost of living around here is kind of insane.

Thank you. And yeah, Seattle is gorgeous. If I made like, 3 times as much as I do, I'd stay put. But I'm barely making it by and with how much my rent would be increasing... even if I found a new roommate, I couldn't make it. And I was already in one of the cheaper spots. It's just not viable wth how the rent increases every year and I'm in a job that doesn't do 'raises.'
-
Austin's a great place, anyways. It's got trendy, high-rent districts you can visit and cheap crap-holes you can live in if you like. You should all move here. We love immigrants. Just don't let Texas know. Shhhhhh.
-
I find the Sunbelt pretty livable (I'm in Phoenix atm). It's growing and in the cities, at least, there're pretty decent job prospects. The reasonable cost of living is what's kept me here (might be able to buy a house next year, woo and such!)
Good luck, @Auspice ! I've been in a situation where I just needed to pick up and fucking leave where I was at and make something new somewhere else. I had family to support me, so it wasn't horrendous, but when you don't have that kind of cushion it's a bitch making huge changes like this. I hope every little bit helps.

I really can't picture what mental, social, and/or pecuniary state you'd have to be in to just rip up all your roots and travel an insane distance to a completely new venue to start it all over again.
</irony>Good luck with your endeavours, Auspice. If you ever feel like roaming even further afield, I can probably give you some pointers...

After my divorce, I very, very nearly began applying to jobs to teach english overseas. As in I had a few applications up.
I also happen to have a coworker in Amsterdam who has been trying, for about a year, to get me to be her roommate.
I'm just not quite ready for the international leap.

So, update for you fine-ass folks:
- Truck will be about $1500
- I've paid all but about $450 of the initial move-in costs (deposits, the first pro-rated month, etc). That last $450 has to be paid the day I move in.
- Electricity will have about a $200 deposit on the first bill. If my current water company will do a 'letter of recommendation' they may waive it, but as I need 12 months of 'on time' payments on record, I gotta wait until I pay August's bill, so I have a calendar reminder set to ask them as soon as I pay it in a few weeks.
The GFM is at $1040 right now. I don't know yet how much my final month's rent (it'll be pro-rated some) here will be, so I'm not counting any extra funds (it usually takes an entire paycheck) there. Whch means one more paycheck towards the move. Minus bills (final utilities, etc.), general needs (food, etc.)... I'll have about $500 more towards the move.
That's just enough to cover the truck. So I still need at least $450 for the rest of the rent, plus enough for the travel costs themselves (gas, food, and one night in a motel since @Meg has wonderfully offered to put me up <3).
I am still prodding at other options, obvs. Just letting folks know where things stand. (And this isn't factoring any deposit Charter would want; I can hotspot my phone for a few weeks for work/school. I have a plate and bowl for food and plastic utensils only cost a few bucks. I never mind eating plain ramen to ensure my cat has the food she needs, etc. Stuff like that is just water under the bridge in comparison to the big items. Water service is handled by the complex; they bill you separately.)
There is also the possibility of security deposit from here, but a) gotta split that with current roommate, b) while the place is gonna be clean, the microwave door handle did crack because cheap-ass plastic and there's never any telling how much a place is gonna keep, y'know?, c) who knows how long they'll take to get it to me (they plan to mail it).

I've heard back on one of the (many many) jobs I've applied for in Austin. My current job pays well enough, but I'm burned out, have no benefits (except for health insurance), and no chance of upward movement.
They want to do a phone interview this week. Benefits look good. It'd be a call center gig, so meh, but I've heard good things (as in, person who recommended the company said their friend is happy there). Hopefully the pay is good?

I know we don't talk a whole bunch these days(this is what happens when you play on different games with your friends)but I'll throw something your way. If you ever need a place to stay while you're travelling, I could hole you up for a night or two.

You could always message me on Skype! I know most of what I sent you is like, random links, but I am so so bad at the small talk. Like I never know what to start with other than 'hey here's this funny thing I found'
But I appreciate it man.

If you get lost and find yourself in the middle of China for some reason, you've got a place to stay. For two nights, even, if you like.

If you do that, I'll give you THREE nights!

What I call my 'driving packet' is getting assembled today. I use my phone for GPS on the drive, but I like to have printed directions also for cases of no GPS signal (happens often through UT/CO).
Honestly, all that's left is packing and getting the last of the monehs together. (And giggling at Meg's knob polishing.)
20 days.

Aaaand... a super generous friend has put in the last of what I need for things (truck + rent).
Anything else will go towards deposits on utilities, initial goods for the apartment (like the uh, dishes and silverware I don't own XD), etc. Link again for those who don't have: https://www.gofundme.com/uzzqh-moving-to-austin
I also have a wishlist for things on Amazon: http://a.co/2TPrzYm
(Currently it ships to where I am now. Once move date is nearer, I'll update. I don't want things going there now.) -
I HAVEN'T UPDATED IN A WHILE.
Ahem.
All the money was gotten together.
I have enough buffer.
I THINK.
Like let's hope gas prices don't suddenly spike over the weekend (and to be honest they could because of the eclipse oh god I hope they don't.).I have everything packed that I can pack.
Everything is stacked in the living room to be shuffled out the door onto the truck tomorrow. And then I'll hafta clean the place (well, roommate will be back by at some point to help with that, but yaknow).I'm in the omgnervousenergy stage. I'm ready to be on the road! Been applying to a lot of jobs in Austin and omg I have so many more prospects there than I have in two years here in Seattle. I'm feeling really good about this.
