Period Piece Face vs Modern Face
-
Stole this from Go Fug Yourself (<3) because the girls labeled like five actors and I wanted them to do ALL OF HOLLYWOOD.
You know how some people just look great in period pieces? And some people look jarringly modern?
Reese Witherspoon, for instance, has a super modern face.
Halle Berry has a super modern face.
Julie Roberts, super modern.
Elizabeth Olsen has period piece face, but her sisters, le olsen twins? Modern, all the way.
Emma Stone does NOT have Period Piece Face but you think she does until you really consider it.
Jake Gyllenhaal does not have Period Piece Face UNLESS he has his beard; Maggie has raging Period Piece Face regardless.
Drew Barrymore has Modern Face.
Matthew McConaughey has Period Piece Face but it’s kind of a surprise once you realize it.
Naomie Harris has Period Piece Face. What are some PBs people use that just don't belong in a modern (or futuristic) setting, and which just don't belong in 'period' games?
For instance, two faves: Jensen Ackles and Chris Hemsworth? TOTALLY MODERN FACE. STOP IT.
-
@kanye-qwest okay but what if I just irrationally hate a face whether it is modern or period? Because Matthew McConaighey I just can't stand.
Edit: or spell, apparently.
-
I think a lot of it has to do with costuming more than faces.
but also this
-
I just like pretty faces. What is happening here.
-
I also have no idea what is being discussed.
-
We aren't discussing, we are CATEGORIZING. Ok I'll show a celebrity and you can pick: Modern Face or Period Piece Face.

I do kind of want to punch his face.
-
@kanye-qwest I will take 5 Cate Blanchetts as Hela, please.

Apparently whatever a 'modern face' is. @WildBaboons has a good idea, but I don't see whatever it is other people are seeing.
I thought it was people getting it wrong (e.g., the 'Stop It'), but there are so many things that you could say people get wrong about the relation of their PB to their character that the modernity of their face is not on my list at all. I'm more likely to react to the modernity of their haircut. As much as I get weak-kneed at the librarian look or short hair on women or, mm, the undercut, it doesn't fit all eras.

oh my god, people. This is not that complicated.
Picture Jensen Ackles, but they put hair extensions on him and dressed him up like Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice. It would not look right.
(Colin Firth has raging Period Piece Face)
-
I am honestly baffled by this. What is it about Chris Hemsworth or Cate Blanchett's face that has anything to do with whether they can play a period role?

Germanic or even Puritan. Done. Easy. Give us a hard one.
-
@thenomain A. you're wrong, and B. Jason Momoa is a hard one.
(Cate Blanchett is a rare person who has BOTH modern face and period piece face)

"No You" already? You're slipping.
B. Jason Momoa is a hard one.
Shave his dreads. Any (edit: West) African period piece. Seriously, you're not very good at this.

Okay this was meant to just be kind of fun and you're honestly being a dick so just forget it, I guess? jesus fucking christ.

Ryan Gosling is a real human bean and a real hero.
Cate Blanchett is just the human equivalent of Guile Theme Goes With Everything.
-
I dunno, I'm having fun. You're the one who said I was wrong, which isn't fun, no.
I can totally see Jensen Ackles's face in the role of one of the people trying to settle America. The surname 'Ackles' comes from around Manchester and he can cast into that look, just not too "British". (I don't know why I imagine he's okay for a British settler, but there you go.) I think he has a more Germanic (and distinctly NORTH Germanic) look, but besides a stand-in as a man holding a halberd I can't imagine him actually playing these roles.
I did think about this before answering. Did some Googling. I have no idea what a "modern face" is supposed to be, nor a "period face", but did try my best.
edit: Well, I did try.
-
Can confirm, Cate Blanchett's face is perfect for everything.

This is why I can't play these games. I thought this was Robin Wright.
Face blindness is a real problem y'all. I can't just imagine person as thing.
Except in certain cases. I know Matthew McConahahahahaha has a punchable face. I remember that. I couldn't describe him for a sketch artist, but I know whenever I see him that I want to deck him.
