          @tempest Alright alright alright

he does look smarmy, though for me, the actor who immediately makes me think of punching when I see him is Ben Barnes (who has period face). If ever he was cast in something as a legit good guy, I would never believe it.

@tempest I can't even explain. He drives me nuts for no sensible reason.

              Sooooooo punchable.

Saying the quiet parts out loud since 1996.

Idris Elba - Either. Both. All.
Maggie Smith - Period Piece Face.
                Joan Cusak - Modern Face.

@darinelle OMG Joan Cusack, wow I hadn't even considered her. COMPLETE modern face. Idris Elba, like Cate blanchett, should just put his face everywhere. Literally everywhere.

I think the historical dopplegangers thing (which blows my mind every time I see it, but also really just confirms that there's a set # of human faces) pretty much disproves this?

A lot of it (OP lists a lot of women, particularly) may just be a makeup thing, also.

@kanye-qwest I actually think John Cusack is also a modern face. I think the Cusacks are just modern.

Well, so I think it's more a matter of what people find attractive. Some things are classic looks that are still considered handsome or beautiful, but there's a specific subset of beautiful now that didn't look beautiful to the tastes at the time, so they don't fit as well with period sensibilities.

I'm not sure casting people know that? Like Keira Knightley is constantly cast for historical stuff, and I imagine plenty of folks think she looks good in the costumes etc. But she's bad casting for actual beauty norms for those periods.

@bored it really depends on how you are classifying it. I think a lot of people are trying to debate the validity of the idea of Period Face vs Modern Face, and that's cool, but not what I came to dish about. I just want to put famous people in a category. It is pleasing to me.

Benicio Del Toro has modern face
                                  Javier Bardem has period face

I will mention the easiest answer.
Sean Bean - period face all the way, also likely means the character will die as well. The Sharpe's series being the notable exception to that rule.

@kanye-qwest Javier Bardem makes me want to axe kick him in the face.

He should learn different accents than 'standard Catalonian' or wherever the fuck it is he came from.

                                        Channing Tatum: Modern face.
                                        Jennifer Lawrence: Modern face.
Tom Hanks: Modern face (although did well in WW2 roles).
                                        ScarJo: Modern face.
                                        Tom Cruise: Modern face.
                                        Rachel McAdams: Modern face.
                                        Matt Damon: Modern face.
                                        Kristen Stewart: Modern face.
                                        Mark Wahlberg: Modern face.
                                        Julie Andrews: Period face.
                                        Daniel Day-Lewis: Period face.
                                        Meryl Streep: Period face.
Tom Hardy: Can go either way, but gives good period face.
Emma Watson: Likewise, can go either way.

There feels like there is a strong (but not direct) correlation between Modern Face and American Face.
