Modiphius Games

Modiphius just announced they got the Fallout IP and are putting out a 2d20 Fallout game. They are on FIRE right now.
So their list of awesome IPs now expands to:
- Fallout
- Star Trek
- Infinity
- World of Darkness
- John Carter of Mars
- Conan
- Mutant Chronicles
- Dune

I keep seeing this designer come up. Anyone have a look at the Star Trek game?
-
@Ganymede Yeah, I bought in on it. I like it. It's bot a super crunchy game system, very RP driven, lots of content, stuff like creating cameo characters.
My kit came with the core book, dice, a GM screen, and maps of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.
I like it leaps and bounds more than the last iteration of Trek RPGs

Geek and Sundry did a show with it. It seems to be a rather decent system... once you get past the whole "ones are good, twenties are bad" thing.

How does it handle ship-combat?
-
As well as it handles everything else. Which is to say, narratively, not simulationisty. Ships are essentially characters with different actions, and there are a list of special actions people in any given station can take to support the ship in what it's doing. It works pretty well, unless you're looking for "you took a hit to the third starboard auxiliary shield generator; it's down 27%" crunchiness.
-
Yeah, ship combat (as well as the whole of the Modiphius system) is more designed to mimic what you see on the Star Trek shows.
So it's less "calculate the right percentage of impulse power to navigate the debris" and more "Tom Paris knows his stuff. He rolls and navigates the debris field".
I reaaaally like this system for creating walk-on characters. Basically, it's got this side system with character sheets that contain about 1/4 of the information of a regular character sheet. Need a "Redshirt"? In 30 seconds you jot down stats and a name. If the redshirt didn't die and you want him again on an away mission vs the Borg? Hang onto the "Supporting Cast Member" sheet and put him into play.
This system works nicely for when your character is a pilot circling the away team's area, but you still want to partake in the combat if the PCs split up the party.

In your collective opinion, how well would the Modiphius system work on a MUSH? Or would it?
-
Hrm.
I think it could be done. One major aspect to the 2d20 Modiphius system is the interplay between GM and Player. IIRC it's called "escalation" or some other word in that general wheelhouse.
There's a system for Pcs and GMs trading off bennies/negative tokens to tug-of-war the scenes. A few ground rules on GMing should make that work well.
Otherwise? It's a gaming system for dice rolling. Ships are statted nicely and theres a lot of online support/modules/info for it.
B+

You have a problem.

I have many problems. I don't suppose you'd be more specific?

We can add "inability to understand concepts through context" to that list.

This looks neat, particularly the ship stuff, which I've rarely seen done in a way I'd describe as fun. Will check it out.

I was not at all impressed with their Star Trek game, in fact, I can honestly say that it is one of the few games that I've ever truly regretted purchasing. Last Unicorn, Decipher, and FASA all did it much better.
LUG Trek would work much better for an online game, IMO.
-
@Ganymede The problem would be the "Bad Stuff" Pool. Everything in Modiphius's 2d20 engine revolves around the concept that you by default roll 2d20. But you can choose to roll up to 3 additional by giving the GM points to a "Bad Stuff" pool.
Unlike some systems, this isn't just an optional thing; the engine is balanced around it. If you need to do difficult things, you're going to NEED to do this. The GM then turns around and spends these points to heal bad guys, call in extra bad guy reinforcements in a scene, etc.
Essentially, the heart of the system only works with the idea that the GM and the players are spending these Momentum and Bad Stuff (the name of Bad Stuff varies from system to system) points. Without a GM, the thing falls apart. I don't think it would work on a Mush, without someone coming up with an incredibly clever hack.

@GamerNGeek Player running the scene acts as the GM for spending the negative points to preserve the mechanical flow.

Though this doesn't work for scenes that aren't "run".
-
I think the system needs a great deal of back and forth between GM and players in a way that isn't really suitable for a standard MU.
Could it be written into MU code for use as a sort of online tabletop? That's entirely possible.

Scenes that aren't 'run' would pretty much just be social scenes; no real rolls needed for coffee shop/kitchen table/Ten Forward talk. And if you do need to make an opposing roll (price haggling, bluffing, and such), the player opposing the roll acts as the GM to spend the negative points. If it's a scene where there's an investigation-type roll needed to further a TP, the player/Staff in charge of the TP does the GM work.
